Debate #1: 25% for a recessive disease is still not that much considering that there's 75% chance that the sickle cell won't be expressed, but there's 50% chance that the child will become a carrier and might possibly have another problem of passing it to future offsprings. But regardless I believe gene screening should be applicable in this case since factors like the couple's wealth could be seen as a major factor in this scenario (ie they might not have enough money to provide the necessary treatments/resources for their child's disease). By finding out, they could also then carry out other ways to produce a baby (ie from a surrogate). Now take note this is before the age where genetic engineering is safe enough to carry out, cus that will be a whole different story...
I agree especially in this day and age, a person's autonomy in regards to healthcare is so important.. ESP if it would effect a third party, which in this case would be the future offsprings that will suffer with the disease and the socio-economic status of the family. But another point I would like to add on is that late term abortion will be avoided, since that in itself can carry more risks/complications (not to mention the costs unless covered by insurance ofc). this way will be very beneficial for the physiological as well as psychological health of the mother.

Hi Dr. Demi! Thank you so much for all of your videos! You explain with pure simplicity, making it easy to understand. ❤❤❤❤... Would you please create a bioinformatics video since it is mentioned in the fifth edition and in the syllabus, "outline the benefits of using databases that provide information about nucleotide sequences of genes and genomes, and amino acid sequences of proteins and protein structures"?
Does anyone know any other good teacher like Dr. Demi for A Level Chemistry and Physics? I've got exams next week Wednesday so plz help me out if you know. It will be much appreciated. Thank you.
