CHAPTER XXIX Ft. Graham 'Abo' Henry // Former Underbelly Gangster

GYPSY TALES

Graham 'Abo' Henry was a notorious figure in the Sydney underworld. He was a partner of Ned Smith and specialised in armed robbery throughout their time with a 'green-light' from the NSW Police Department.
Abo ended up going to jail for stabbing and wounding a police officer after a fight but since being released from prison has moved away from a life of organized crime.
It was a super interesting conversation with a unique character and one that I throughly enjoyed!

Recently watched a TikTok clip talking about his dad and I wanted to know more so came to the original source of this video which was linked. I had no idea who he was or what it was about but I was completely engaged. What an interesting man with one hell of a life story.

You just hit the old proverbial nail right on the head. Being in and about it for over 35 yrs .up our way they legalized it and tobacconists up newcastle in real close proximity & each was pulling 50 large perday all good its legal legitimate ...NO NO NO.no dolls for bike groups to pay police to pay politicians. Thats the only reason they were criminalised again.no teenie is gunna find any satisfaction in asking dr for sum drug (up.down and round & round.inbetween and very mean) then have nurse at chemist administer it come back in 15 min then 1 hr to observe to gauge individual responces.TAKE CRIMINALITY OUT OF DRUGS FUCK IT WOULD BE CLASSED A MEDICINE IF A DR DEALT IT. FURTHER MORE BUT OUR KIDS MATTER AND OVER 90% OF PRISONERS ARE IN FOR DRUG RELATED CRIMES VERY SADELY BUT THEY ARE SOMEONES KIDS AND THEY ALL MATTER .LOVE UR STUFF

This interviewer is pretty bloody good. Good because this man has a lot to say - the sort of bloke you could listen to talk all day, and the interviewer let's him go - not like a lot of them who can't wait to get a word in. He speaks only when required. Get Abo on again! :)

Good or bad, this bloke is a diamond. Me, being a person who has always tried to be an honest guy but who is a morally weak person, know that I do have a bent side that I 've acted upon occasionally. There is no way that I'd try to compare to this story with mine but ................ what a fantastic life this man has carved for himself. Arriving in Sydney in the mid-eighties from the UK, my first job was with a large Ford dealership as a Fleet Salesman within the Cross area. Sometimes things would happen that I noticed that included pick-ups for bookies by my fellow salesmen that I took no notice of - ish. Things happened that I was not used to in the sheltered Pommie life that I'd led. EG, I was getting excited about a potential 4 car deal with an Eastern Suburbs company when some of my Fleet companions sidled up to me and murmured that I was wasting my time. Two days later, the owner of the biz was dead. Phew, a wakeup call for me. I soon learned that life in Sydney was a lot different and that some of the names that Abo talks about were, at that time, very real. This is a brilliant interview with a fabulous character and may he live out the rest of his life in peace.

Generational trauma right here. Thank goodness he broke the cycle with his own children and wife. I know what it's like to have these things happen. I was molested when I was a young girl by a family member, learnt years later the man that did that to me had been sexually abused when he was a young child. A lot more people are becoming aware of this vicious cycle and making conscience moves to heal deep rooted trauma so we are not affecting generations after us. Great interview.

Sometimes its hard to be a woman Giving all your love to just one man You'll have bad times And he'll have good times Doing things that you don't understand But if you love him you'll forgive him Even though he's hard to understand And if you love him oh be proud of him 'Cause after all he's just a man Stand by your man Give him two arms to cling too And something warm to come to When nights are cold and lonely Stand by your man And show the world you love him Keep giving him all the love you can Stand by your man Stand by your man And show the world you love him Keep giving him all the love you can Stand by your man... Song by : Tammy Wynette Unfortunately for the years following World Wars, many men couldn't cope, and women became another casualty of incredible wars of attrition, that had never before been unending in the sense of continuous warefare for years, that ended in death regularly, or at least horrific injuries. The psychological toll will never be known because many times these men were simply brushed under the carpet, and were told that their issues were just cowardice. Only in the Afghan and Iraq wars have the millitary and medicine taken a honest look at the damage done to men physically and psychologically. The picture is troubling, and speaks volumes about the way we left the soldiers of the Great Wars to fend for themselves after the horrors they saw, experienced, and took part in. Nobody deserved be assaulted at the hands of these men, but as 18 year olds going to war, they certainly didn't have the tools or maturity to cope with the outcome either. In effect, many of these young men who trained and served together, were very similar to a tightly nit group of college students, that in their 2nd or 3rd year watched the majority of their class mowed down in the prime of their youth , like a modern school shooting, yet many times more gruesome. The other great injustice that should be put in context, about that earlier era is that women who were victims of abuse did not have the support system, education, wage equivalence, or equality that men did. To leave your husband was often times not only a stigma, but there was a good chance your children would go hungry, and you would never break out of poverty in time for your children to become successful. The other overriding factor is that only the strongest minded women could break the grip of their own families sending them back to their abusive families, their church doing exactly the same, cultural stigma being as chastising as it was, and the overwhelming fear of the unknown. Very often, men were the leader of the family, and certainly if the wife didn't have family she could count on, then she was at the mercy of her husband. But women during the Second World War did get a taste of work outside of secretarial jobs and motherhood. They worked in the factories building the machinery of war, and it paved the way for the womans liberation movement of the 50s and 60s. It also created many of the social nets that were needed to help women and families in abusive circumstances. Many of us can't imagine violence against our mothers, and it is less prevalent and better understood. Men realize that assaulting women and children is a mark of cowardice and wont be tolerated. But , still there are men who abuse their mates, and it needs to be exposed and remedied. There is also another form of abuse that is even more secret and just as damaging. That is the abuse of men by their wives. The men fall victim to a women that will use the system in place to help them, against their male partner. Enlisting scorn and ridicule apon the male, and the fear of arrest and incarcerationif the male doesn't submit to all forms of abuse. Its equally as heinous and decietful.

How many families were destroyed by the soldier returned from WWI or WWII unable to slot back into everyday life after the atrocities he experienced and rarely spoke about. And then during the Vietnam War the troops were often thrown together on landing in the war zone rather than training together as a cohesive unit in Australia as was usually the case in WWI and WWII. And why were we sending our young men to die horrifically in this strange asian country? How many children of Vietnam vets have suicided or are on psych drugs. There is also the abuse of the children by the single mother who does manage to leave her abusive husband but then has no support and takes out her frustrations on her children. It's all so messy and multi layered and intergenerational. And so many immigrants brought with them a culture of male violence in particular the Irish, yugoslavs and muslims. Ultimately the buck always stops with us as individuals.

What a good soul Graham was my thought, that unfortunately ended up in the "wrong" side due to his life journey and upbringing. the real fearless old school knock about that was hard but very fair is what i read of his memories, unlike the clowns chopper, roger rodgerson that were promoted by the MSM. I bet Graham still has a lot of "friends" rather than enemies, or he should anyway in my opinion. Thank you Gypsy Tales for giving us the pleasure.
