I approve of Knuckles being overpowered. He is characteristic of the series is being the powerful one and he is the only one, to constantly wear punching gloves. And he has a killer theme song about beating up others.
His usual weakness is that he's just not quite as fast as Sonic-tier characters. In an arena fighter where people faster than him *can't* just hit-and-run him to death? Of course he dominates.
I've played the game a decent amount casually over the years, and I was always invested in Fang over any other character. A major part of that is because for a lot of characters at a low level, the differences between punches and kicks feel very arbitrary. I never felt like I needed to use kick attacks, they felt redundant. However, with Fang, there is a clear difference between punch attacks and kick attacks, especially considering that his projectile punch attacks cannot break barriers, thus forcing one to rely on kicks early on. It felt like Fang had a complete moveset I needed to learn and engage with while everyone else had like half of a moveset in comparison. Naturally, at higher levels of play this isn't true at all, but for a new player up against other new players or the ai playing as Fang early on helped get me accustomed to actually using all three buttons and learning what circumstances promoted different attacks.
Fang has a lot of unique kicks too. He's got a really neat kit actually. The main thing with kicks is they will have higher priority in some spots like vs spin dashes, and they also are actually usually faster to come out than punches.
I never realized sonic the fighters was an actual competitive fighting game. I thought it was a mostly forgotten arcade game that was rereleased twice and was shown for a millisecond in Wreck It Ralph.
Fighting game noob, Iron Tagger/ Potemkin main, and being my favorite sonic character along with being the only sonic game he is playable I have no regrets picking Bark even when I whiff a grab or move at the speed molasses. I consider it penalty training for grapplers in other games. Also Biff Baff animation is just too good.
Asking about overviews in the discord and being met with this a few hours later was the funniest shit to ever happen. these videos are great btw keep it up!!
I didn't even guess all my life that a Sonic fighting game would not just have Sonic be more average in regards to speed, but also have him be a contender for the top tiers. Unrelated note: I love that Dynamite Plant looks like a fusion of Chemical Plant, Oil Ocean, and Metropolis, among other neat environmental touches.
17:08 Hey, what is the music that plays during the Espio Review? i heard it somewhere before but i can't remember the name
Interesting video always wanted to try this game but never have. Closet I have gotten is playing fighting vipers and spamming been a bunch he is allot of fun to play but feels cheap as hell at least in that game
I love this game because of one word squishy. I swear these guys are like a gelatin ball bouncing left and right. 1:44
I'm new to Sonic the FIghters, and I can tell you that I kinda like it despite having a disdain for a lot of Sonic games. and I'll just say this... Metal Sonic can go to an ocean for all I care
2:30 funny enough this makes sense. Virtua fighter 2 is probably the only poorly balanced game in the series. It’s also produced by Yu Suzuki & developed by AM2. & the best character in the game Lau also is the first opponent despite exploiting tons of techniques that make him better than the guy designed to be the best character in the game.
Boss characters iirc Eggman is banned with an asterisk due to the drill claw move which can be spammed to win, but you can pick him if the opponent agrees Metal is a final boss of the game i think and is meant to strip you of quarters
@@wusstunes I get that, it just feels weird to have him in the thumbnail and show his shadow right before espio, just to not go over him and any changes with the eggman
The games are different enough that you should probably just play the characters and figure it out yourself. There's a lot of mechanics shared between characters so just start with who you think you might like and feel free to jump between characters. Falco can be played a bunch of ways so I don't know exactly what someone being a Falco main actually says about their tastes. I play Peach in Melee but I really love Knuckles, Bean, Tails, Mechless Eggman and play most of them pretty aggressively.
If there are 100 honey enjoyers left I am one of them If there are 10 honey enjoyers left I am one of them If there is only one honey enjoyer left that is me If there are no more honey enjoyers I am dead
2:16 "Play sonic if you want to fully engage with the game and your opponent" I've been too traumatized for that sentence not to sound weird to me
This is SEGA's chance to make Sonic the Fighters HD and add characters like Eggman, Shadow, Metal Sonic, and everyone's favorite character: Avatar from Sonic Forces
Customizable Avatar-Self from Sonic Forces in a fighting game for Sonic? Now THAT sounds like Sonic's call to Soul Calibur almost (or Street Fighter 6), oh and don't forget about Silver, Blaze, Sticks, or Mephales (w/e his name was who was Silver's *actual* nemesis and ruined his name), maybe Biolizard or Black Doom as Bosses?
I never had any idea how complex this game was! Honestly, "Sonic the Fighters" could've been Sonic's "Mario Kart" if they didn't abandon it. Sonic Battle, I guess, is technically in that series but it's been almost 20 years since that game came out...
I remember buying Sonic the Fighters on Xbox Arcade along with Sonic Adventure and having a bunch of fun with friends at parties who didn't even know about the game. It's awesome to see the renaissance of this wacky game with the fgc.
This is so insanely entertaining Bean is not a Woodpecker 💀 EDIT: This might be misleading so; I know he is but in my mind he will remain a duck... or dynamite because it's funny.
I remembered playing as Tails the first time I played this game, I kept grabbing and slamming the other fighters with his flying move in the story mode, and it was fun. I wanna play this game again.
This is actually pretty in depth! Still not sure who I wanna play since the guy I wanted to play is banned haha. I’ll still probably check this game out one day
When I play STF story mode as Sonic I always find chances to perform ↓↓P but I always fail and does a regular punch instead. Wait is that You're Izayoi
This game's metagame is more detailed than people think, because it based on virtua fighter and fighting vipers from Sega AM2, their 3d fighters have always historically had immensely deep movesets
broke: playing sonic the fighters via emulation woke: Booting up Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased his name, walking (slowly) to the former club sega, beat up some thugs while practicing Tiger Drops, starting a substory, walking inside the arcade, pay 100 yen, boot up sonic the fighters
0:54 "Much like in Smash. Sonic is a character who handles many of his problems in StF the same way." By being a camping bitch? "By turning into a ball." Oh right. 🫠
The studio behind Virtua Fighter perfected the games over the years. They can do the same with Sonic. A new game with new fighters and a deep story can work.
