Thankyou for the video Sir, a small question if you can - what connector wires do I need to purchase to transmit the voltage ? Are they purchased separately from the plug adapter ? I have always wondered about the material used in the wires, and how it would surely affect the amount of voltage and current.
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 4 года назад
Anything will work, but to be technically correct, you need to choose the size of the wire according to the amount of current you want to take to charge your battery. If you're only using this to charge drill batteries like I did in the video, a size 1 or 1.5 mm will do, but if you're trying to charge a for example car battery you might want to consider 2 or 2.5 mm wires. the material does affect the voltage at the load, but not in this case as the distance is not too long,. Yes if it was for a load at 100 meter away from the charger, then you'd have to consider a few other factors such as material of the cable.

Great way of doing this. I purchased the power adapter you recommended and it looks like I have to cut the cable in order to separate the -ve wire from the +ve. Which wire is +ve? The coating of one wire is black plastic and the other is black & white.
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 3 года назад
The black is negative and the black and white is positive. If you have a multimeter you can double check it with that too; if you connect the red probe of your volt meter to the "black and white" of your power adaptor, and the black probe of the meter to the black, the reading should be a positive value. I'd also included the link to buy a jack to PCB terminals, which you could buy and that way you wouldn't have to cut the cable at all.

@totalelectricaltraining

If you mean to use it to charge a car battery! then I'd say there's no need to modify if the battery charger you have can supply enough current, however, even if it doesn't you can still use it, but it will take a lot longer time to charge!

hi..i just want to clear things up..yiu said the starting charge should never leave a big gap..like start of 9v to 14v...so what does this mean that i should leave my batteries with a 9v with it?
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 3 года назад
No, I said the stop voltage should be set at a bit (maybe about 1.5% -1.6% of the rating of the battery) higher value. So, for example if your battery rating is 18 volts, then you set the top end at about 21-22 volts . Your minimum set value should be as high as possible without causing the relay LED to go off. I hope this is clear!

Hooked a 18v battery to this and relay clicks on and light comes on every 2 seconds, tried adjusting up and down the voltage numbers and light or relay does not work. Battery is pretty dead wondering if that might make this happen?
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 3 года назад
If the battery is almost dead, then you need to adjust the up and down voltage to where the relay clicks and the LED comes on and stays on, after it's charged a few hours, then you will need to change the voltages back up, and keep doing this until you get the battery to charge up to where it needs to be at. If the battery is completely damaged you might not be able to do any of these. you need to see what reading you get when it clicks On, and what reading you get when it clicks Off.

The adapter, how did you wire that , do you have a video on that.
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 3 года назад
The board clearly shows where the input voltage is and where the output terminals are. Negative of both input and output are connected to the middle terminals, and the input positive is the terminal towards the edge of the board, and the other terminal is output positive.
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 3 года назад
All you need to do is to cut the adaptor's output plug, and strip the insulation off, then you have two wires, check with your multi-meter to make sure you connect the positive wire to the positive of the board, and negative to the negative terminal on the board.. or use this link to buy the connector for it; for USA; amzn.to/37jY1PS And for UK: amzn.to/36fLpKf

I don't know why a strike out line shows through part of the text. Please just read every thing. Thank you for the video. I do have a few questions: 1. All the batteries you show in the video appear to be NiCd or NiMh. Does your set up work for Li batteries? 2. Some battery chargers have more than just the + / _ contacts. For example the Milwaukee red has +, -, and 3 other terminals (supposedly for the balancing contacts). The Ryobi has +/ -, and a third contact. I was looking at your video to make charger for the Ryobi. With Ryobi charger, testing it with meter, there is no voltage between +/ - while there is about 3V between the 3rd terminal and either + or -. The theory I have been told is that when a battery is connected to the charger, the 3V flowing from the 3rd terminal into the control board of the battery some how activates the +/- and makes the necessary charging current to then flow between the +/-. So, in your system of connecting only the +/- terminals to your charger and totally ignoring the 3rd terminal, there is no charging current. I have already tried connecting the 20V + /_ from a power supply to the +/- of the battery and nothing happens, it does not charge the battery. So, what do you say?
@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 3 года назад
Let me just say that this is for Lithium batteries as well as Ni Cad ones. You cannot just connect the power to the battery directly and charge it that way, Having said that you actually could do that in theory, and even in practice if you could control the length of time the battery is under charge. However, you are talking about quite a few things here; You cannot use this for batteries with slots of a few contacts more than just the main positive and negative contacts. those have to be charged differently, which I will show you in my next video. Watch for that one. Third contact however is not a control of current at all in batteries like the ones I have shown in my video. If you open those packs, you will find the third plate (Contact) is not connected to anything, or it's just a ground. for the circuit, which again doesn't do much in this case. This regulator does more than just connecting and disconnecting the power supply to the battery, it controls the current and the charging, which is why it's called a regulator. All those ICs and components are not there for decoration. You can charge any power tool battery similar to the ones shown in this video, car batteries, Solar Panel batteries and many more with this regulator. I don't know what the strike out line is and I hope this has been helpful.

Be nice to have a solar charger project tie in where it charges the battery than later to power the tool fan lights than power your tablets so and so. My tool batteries do those things. Have an usb and usbc adapter from 12 volt cigarette adapter. Usb adapter works good because it max input is 24v. So 20 volt battery does well. And it fast charges my samsung s tab 8.

@totalelectricaltraining
@totalelectricaltraining 2 года назад
you can make 24 v that way connecting batteries in series, but that doesn't make double the AH as you have presumed. To increase the Ah without increasing the voltage, you need to have the same number of batteries now connected in parallel, so in your case you will have a few in series and a few in parallel, it will be combination of series and parallel if you like! I hope that's clear!

I have a couple of concerns here. Most lithium ion batteries are equipped with an internal bms and should be charged through the dedicated charging connection, not the normal load connection. This is to protect against one cell being overcharged and causing a fire/explosion, if the cells get out of balance. The bms monitors each individual cell and if there’s a significant difference it can disconnect the charging current. By charging through the load terminals, you by pass the bms and disable this crucial safety feature. That brings me to my second point. Lithium batteries are current sensitive. They have very low internal resistance, so they need a current limited charger, to prevent damage through excessive current. They are also temperature sensitive, and should never be charged at very low temperatures. You need to refer to the data sheet for specifics for each battery type. But for normal folk, charging in a normal domestic situation, we can probably ignore the temperature. Professional tool chargers do take account of it, however. So, in addition to your set start and stop voltages, there needs to be a maximum current limit setting, which will vary from battery to battery. Some are quite robust and will withstand fast charging, potentially 3 or 4 amps, but many are not and will sustain damage at less than 1 amp. Finally, most batteries are not fully charged at their rated nominal voltage. Many are, in fact, effectively fully discharged if they show their rated voltage with no load applied. So your 18v battery, in all probability, should be charged to 20v, before shutting down. But the makers data sheet must be consulted and complied with. All of that notwithstanding, your little control board is impressive and would be ideally suited to non lithium battery types, including the lead acid found in cars, motorcycles, garden equipment, burglar alarms and various other products where high current at low voltage might be required. Thank you for an interesting video

OK. Let me save your time, your comment is just another one of those typical ones that are too worried about charging a battery; Listen Ihave explained this in my videos, not particularly in this video, but the revised version of this video, which you should see it come up at the end of this one, where I address these typical concerns. This charger is for any battery lithium or carbon monoxide or TNT type, AS LONG AS they have TWO wires or points of contacts to be charged as shown in this video and the other video, and your original charger doesn't do any miracle charging a two point battery, but doing exactly what this charger does. The middle point you're talking about in this case is not even connected to anything as shown in the video, it's just a gimmick. As explained again in my revised video for "concerned people" like yourself, If you have a battery with more than three ACTUAL points of contacts (Not just a decorative third point), then you need to pick the other battery charger board that I show in my video and I have in my website. SO I suggest you watch the other video and listen carefully before jumping your gun! Thanks! Take care and be safe!.

I had the same sort of feeling. Setting the end voltage for a car battery (lead acid) would be ok as it reduces the charge when it gets there. Not so with Nicad or Nmhi. They go down in volts as they get to the fully charged point and start to heat up. Both types do this at slightly different points. Normally full charge is detected by the temperature going up or the voltage going down to turn off the charging

@billhall1983
@billhall1983 4 года назад
@@makdady66 Just putting a current limited, voltage controlled supply across any battery to charge it sounds like a nice simple idea which will sort of work, but if you want the most out of your batteries then they need to be charged correctly. Ni-Cads can be charged slow or fast. For slow charging the current is limited to 1/10th of the Ah capacity. So a 1Ah battery would be charged at 100mA. At this current when the battery is fully charged the internal gas given off recombines back into solution and gives off a bit of heat. This allows other cells in the battery to catch up and all be charged. The disadvantage of this is that it takes 12 hours to charge but you won't damage the battery. Fast charging needs to have a means of turning off the charge once the battery is full. When a Ni-Cad reaches fully charged the voltage changes from going up to going down. A Ni-Cad charger detects this voltage change and drops the charge current to a much lower level to give a bit of time for all the cells to equalise. Also the battery will start to get hot. Chargers usually have a fail safe temperature cut off as well so that if the fully charged detection failed the temperature rise would be used to stop the charging. Using the simple power supply charging method it could be possible to set the cut off voltage a bit below the voltage at which point it starts to go down, but the battery would not be fully charged. A common problem with Ni-Cads is that a cell or cells can develop internal short circuits. If it is a resistive short then it will still charge up to the full voltage but will not hold the charge for long. If the short becomes a solid short, then that cell will not charge and the battery will never reach full voltage. I use a circuit I built about 40 years ago to sort out internal short circuits. It is powered from a mains transformer. The positive half cycle charges a capacitor to about 30 volts, then on the negative half cycle it is discharged directly to the battery. This gives a succession of 25Hz short high current pulses into the battery. This clears the short circuits and charges the battery slowly. I hope this helps but remember, All batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and will eventually become un-useable. Having the correct charger will ensure the best battery life.

All those different batteries and socket are evil. We should fight that. The market is in billions, if there was an universal socket, it would shrink the market but it would be practical for customers AND ecological. People like us who are hacking the bad practises of this world are good people. We must be careful manipulating dangerous equipment outside of their normal use. Regulators and law makers should kill all those different sockets and impose a standard, like USB is, but for power tools. most people have no time for this and purchase a new charger and battery each time they need a new device.
