Thanks Warren, Worked on nitrogen accumulators on transmission valve assembly/test machines to seat the valve by sending high frequency pulses (1000 pulses/10 seconds) to ping the valve seats so they would not leak, then test the seats for leaks. After so many parts we had to manually breakdown the valve assy. and with a microscope viewer check the valve seats for concentricity. Like the valve control modules in the E4OD transmissions when I worked for Bosch as a maintenance line technician for transmission controls. If your supply regulator has a vent a safe way to discharge pressure it back the regulator off to close like you would on gas welding and cutting bottles leave hoses and valves open to regulator, that way a line does not blow-off accidently while venting. Santa needs to get you a couple of bottle carts/trolleys. 2500 psi missiles of stored energy.

Thanks for including the safety factor. When I was 11 an uncle gave me a quick, vivid safety lecture about the power of logs on a landing suddenly shifting and rolling, crushing little climbing people. The image burned itself into my psyche and helped make me safety-conscious ever since. In addition to God’s special protection, that atitude spared me from maiming and death many times.

Love the warning sign, looks like a giant DNA helix will jump out and get you, like a jack in the box. We had nitrogen primary dampers/height adjustment on tracked equipment. Lot of big torque on nuts/bolts, and big pressure in the nitrogen cylinder, never a good day replacing them. Really enjoyed the video, I understood what you were explaining, means everyone else should to lol. Stay safe out there!!!

I don't believe I've ever even heard of a Nitrogen Accumulator before. All I know about Nitrogen is we use it in circle track racing to drive the Air Guns (lug wrenches) and fill the tires because it is DRY - No Moisture content. No moisture to corrode the internals of the Guns and No Moisture to Expand the tires by expanding with rising temperature.

Steve Holton , Nitrogen accumulators have been used in hydraulic systems for many years . The Unimate robots i worked on in 1975 had them to compensate for pressure surges when robot made long fast moves . Charged to 575 psi .

I might be mistaken about this but I think they could have done the track tension better assuming they have an air compressor on the engine and simply have a setup where it automatically tensions the tracks with a simple on/off switch that goes to a solenoid valve on an air tank and when the switch goes into the on state it opens the valve and then closes it when it's at the determined pressure

Always a fun job messing with high pressure gas installations that will kill you if you don't know what you're doing. I found those to be real attention getters when something goes wrong. Having a pneumatic gas accumulator helps to suck every bit of nitrogen out of them big tanks, though.

I was wondering when you would get to the nitrogen. I had to pull both my cylinders off because both of them needed to be rebuilt. They would not hold nitrogen. I had to cut every pin to remove the cylinders there was no hammering them out.

Is there a spring in the accumulator or is it just a nitrogen bladder which acts like a pressure spring?
@dieseldoc8694
@dieseldoc8694 3 года назад
There is a large spring inside that does most of tensioning. There is a bladder inside of the barrel as well that is charged. It acts as a shock absorber in the system if you will. In the tractors like an MT tractor where there is a hydraulic cylinder tensioning the track the accumulator is most important. It is why allows some flex in the system when you hit a ditch in a field it lets there be a little “give” in the system.
@merlepatterson
@merlepatterson 3 года назад
@@dieseldoc8694 I understand the theory of operation, I was just curious because most accumulators only have high pressure bladders to maintain a relatively constant pressure over a given pressure flux range. My sense would be that they are using a piston driven accumulator to eliminate the need for large tensioner springs altogether. Though, I'm just speculating from my Navy experience with accumulators everywhere.

@johnlemmey7698
@johnlemmey7698 3 года назад
That didn't make sense. The plug you were playing with on the front of the cylinder i thought was for oil to loosen the track. There should be no gas there? The gas and spring should be on the shaft end, to tighten the track. Or am i misunderstanding.
@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353
@westerntruckandtractorrepa1353 3 года назад
You are. The hydraulic pressure is used to detention the track, the spring tensions the track, after you release hydraulic pressure and tighten track up the same end is charged with nitrogen as a shock absorber.

Not a farmer or mechanic of any sorts, but that tensioner seems way overcomplicated for what it needs to do. And why the added nuisance of needing nitrogen over dry air that's 80% nitrogen anyway? Pressure change v: temperature isn't all that great unless you're flying a SR-71 at Angels 70 where it might matter.
