In this video, Charity Bangbe Ladu unveils her profound research on girl child blood compensation among the Lotuko tribe in Torit, Eastern Equatoria, South Sudan. Charity discusses her findings on this culturally significant practice, where a girl is given as compensation to the family of a killed victim.
Charity used oral history methods to capture the perspectives of community members who have experienced this practice. Her study reveals the motivations and varying views within the community, highlighting the need for awareness and potential solutions to this issue.
Her research aims to provide a basis for government and NGO interventions, focusing on the rights of the girl child and the broader implications for women in South Sudan. Charity also shares her personal journey and the support she received from the South Sudan Women’s Research Network (SSWRN), which has been instrumental in empowering her as a researcher.
This research is part of SSWRN, an EU-funded initiative by the Rift Valley Institute aimed at empowering women researchers and incorporating local women’s voices into research that influences decision-making on critical social issues in South Sudan.
