Being featured in a central storyline in Coronation Street has launched Charles Bonnet Syndrome into the public spotlight. Up until this point there has been low public awareness of this frightening, and often debilitating, condition which affects people with sight loss.
Our webinar looks to explain what it is, what support there is and the latest research taking place. We hear from Judith Potts, actor, health writer and founder of Esme's Umbrella - the campaign to raise awareness of Charles Bonnet Syndrome; Mariya Moosajee, leading research professor and consultant ophthalmologist at UCL and Moorfield and Great Ormond Street Hospital for children; Nina Chesworth, who ran a creative cafe before she lost her sight and has Charles Bonnet Syndrome; and Richard Hawley, the actor who plays Johnny Connor on ITV's Coronation Street who develops Charles Bonnet Syndrome.
Charles Bonnet Syndrome develops when someone of any age, children too, has lost over 60% of sight. It causes vivid, silent, visual hallucinations, which range from disturbing to terrifying. It is not a mental health condition but is caused entirely by loss of sight.
