IN SUNSHINE
A New Poem Written & Read by Charles Bryant
Depths of depravity; deeps of brief despair.
Perfect conditions for the living dream:
no clamouring family to distract me; no work
to grind me down and numb my mind; no
misfortune but the natural gripe of age
which in itself is promise of relief,
the cross schoolboy approaching end of term,
hilarious freedom of the holiday.
A gentleman of independent means,
I face the wonderful turning universe
with all its mystery of time and space
and closer inner magic of the mind.
Against a gold ground glows the gleaming world,
its infinite gradations clearly limned,
its overarching shape and texture drawn
in silken silhouette, tracery
of pine leaves, startling flowers, ducks at ease
beside a silver lake whose waters, stilled,
reflect the open burning of the sky
and our great regent sun, refulgent lord -
of earth and air and all its creatures...god!
