Charles Cosby talked in-depth about the drastic change that occurred in Oakland, California when crack hit the streets in 1984. Cosby described the shift from an innocent community where everyone knew each other, to a fast-paced life of selling drugs and making quick money. At the age of 16, Cosby was introduced to the profitable world of drug dealing by a local dealer named Banana. Under Banana's mentorship, Cosby quickly adapted to the lifestyle. When questioned about his family's knowledge of his illicit activities, Cosby recounted a time his mother unwittingly threw out two ounces of cocaine (worth $4,000), mistaking it for nothing of value, showing the secretive nature of his life at the time.

Crack hit Oakland around Sept 1983 . The big splash came in 84. The Berkeley chemist student invented it in 1982. Big Tutti took it to LA in 84 then expanded it across the country from there.

No, the chemist from Berkeley came up with his formula for rocked up cocaine added with baking soda in 1974. People were smoking cocaine with ether for many years throughout the 1970's & early 1980's. Over time i imagine from 1977 onwards people were buying cocaine from a dealer, taking it to a house & adding the baking soda to smoke it. I know an older guy from Berkeley & North Oakland who had been smoking crack since 1982, by mid to late 1983 cats began selling it in Oakland & it caught on in 1984 but cats in Los Angeles been selling crack in baking soda rocked up form since 1981. It seems to me that it was mainly the teenagers & people in their very early 20's that were selling crack particularly in Oakland as the older heads were making a whole lot of money off heroin & powdered cocaine going back to the 1970's throughout the early to mid 1980's. Tootie Reese was the LA cocaine kingpin from the 1960's & 1970's. Sometime in early to mid 1980's many guys in LA surpassed Tootie.
