Purcell composed one. So did Boyce. Charles Hubert Hastings Parry’s setting, known by the ‘incipit’ (the first line) of the text as published in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, has become one of the most celebrated. Perhaps this is for the simple reason that it sets out to achieve musically exactly what the opening words say. From the moment it begins, it is throbbing with energy, and the first choral cloudburst of the words ‘I was glad’ still sends a tingle down the spine, even on the hundredth hearing. Parry took a couple of coronations to get it exactly right, though. He originally wrote it to accompany the crowning of Edward VII, and then, nine years later, offered it up again, for the coronation of George V. This time, he added all manner of further pomp to his original to make it into the version we know and love. When Parry’s obituary was published in 1918, it was remarked that his job as Professor of Music at the University of Oxford had eaten up too much of his valuable composing time. Perhaps that was the reason it took him two goes to get I Was Glad absolutely spot on.

901cleo I agree with your comment. It is a truly exhilarating anthem. My soul is always refreshed and renewed when I hear it. The only thing is he was not Sir Parry but rather Sir Hubert. He was a baronet, had he been a baron he then would have been Lord Parry. Baronets are at the bottom of the ladder of hereditary being only knights. It is something we Americans are always getting wrong.

This is a psalm of David. (Psalm 122) David died in 960 BC. (allegedly). The Temple in Jerusalem (The House of the Lord), was dedicated in 832 BC, 128 years later. (allegedly). Therefore David never entered into it himself. So he is speaking of a New Jerusalem, a heavenly one as well? "Peace be within thy walls". This was his prayer for Jerusalem. Jerusalem was totally destroyed in 587 BC. Was there peace in Jerusalem for these 400 odd years? Possibly. But in the new Jerusalem, there will be peace (Schalom) for ever & ever! Amen!

The first 'vivat' is a bit horrifying, but it is performed here exactly as the score indicates. It's not supposed to be sung by the trained, professional Abbey choir, but by scholars (teen boys) from some school or other. It's a bit of a surprise to hear it sung that way, but it's accurate.
@OldPost661
@OldPost661 8 лет назад
***** I wasn't around 500 years ago so I can't speak to the quality of their singing in 1513 but I can tell you most assuredly that what they do in this video wouldn't qualify them as one of the finest choirs within 20 feet of where they were standing, much less the world. To be clear, we're speaking of the teenage chaps with broken voices singing the 'vivats' [see 3:41], not the Abbey choir, which consists of men and boys with unbroken voices and is considered one of the finest of its type in the world. And again to be clear, I'm not arguing that the vivats are wrong. Parry scored them to be sung, by that group, in that way. It's their gig, so hats off to them. But it's not 'singing' as the Abbey Choir (or any of the dozens of cathedral and collegiate choirs in Britain) sing. It's more like yelling.
@scriddle2298
@scriddle2298 7 лет назад
Waha, you think that's bad? Listen to the 1953 coronation version; that makes these Vivats sound like the heavenly choir. Some school... the Queen's (or King's) Scholar's from Westminster School, by tradition the first people to have the right to publicly acclaim the new monarch at the coronation. These are particularly brainy children who get scholarships to the school originally paid for out of the royal purse, starting with Henry VIII. So there's a close and long-standing link between them and the monarchy.Yes, they're not singers and no, they're not meant to sound beautiful - they're meant to make as much noise as possible in acclamation.
@simonlomberg9633
@simonlomberg9633 7 лет назад
The original royal endowment was for "40 boys, to be taught grammar". Within a short time the school also started admitting local boys who could afford the tuition fees and who could pass a (slightly) easier entrance exam. They were (and are still called) called "oppidani", or "town boys"; but the original 40 scholarship places remained for those who wanted to attempt the very competitive entrance exam called The Challenge. Each year the top ten Challenge boys were offered scholarships. As there are ten places each year and only 40 scholarships, these boys had to finish the school curriculum in four years instead of the usual five. The school has an anachronistic set up: as it is an Anglican school with close links to the British monarchy, scholarships can only be given to boys brought up (nominally) as Anglicans. But particularly clever boys of any background could apply for "honorary" scholarships which had all the same perks. So yes, it's a very small percentage of the pupils who get scholarships - and these days the amount awarded covers only a small part of the school fees, so a Westminster scholarship is often more a prestige thing than an award of free tuition. That said, more and more the school is applying means testing of a sort, and clever and deserving boys and girls from poor backgrounds can get grants which will cover most of the school expenses, whether they win a Challenge scholarship or not. Every year there are big drives to raise money from old pupils for the scholarship funds, which now hold a great deal of money. The set up has changed slightly since I was at the school and that now the scholarship boys also do the full five year curriculum because, frankly, the standards at the school are so high that whether you win a scholarship or not, you've got to be pretty damn smart to get in. Girls also enter the school to do their last couple of years and they are entitled to scholarships on merit as well.

The “laetatus sum” (I am happy OR I was glad) has been sung at the beginning of each coronation since King Charles I - sung as the King/Queen enters the Bayern for coronation. Parry’s version was written for King Edward VII and adapted in 1911 for King George V. I am not sure if there are any recordings prior to Queen Elizabeth II being crowned in 1953 - the Vivats might not fit the Latin names of Charles or William. ‘Vivat Rex Charles’ won’t fit the music of ‘Vivat Regina Elizabetha’

Really splendid, although I must point out a conductor's mistake by James O'Donnell at 4'11 - he cues the choir two beats early, and then quickly checks the score; fortunately the singers were counting & didn't follow him! He's a marvellous musician, though - an amazing organist who can sight-read anything. This was probably his only mistake that year - I'd need 20 hands to count mine in a week!

4.11? Are you sure? The camera doesn't show the conductor at 4.11. Besides, it merely confirms my opinion that "conducting", all this melodramatic arm-waving, is unnecessary. The choir & orchestra are musicians & know the music by heart. They know when to come in.OK, if they sing too loud, (or too softly) then they need to be directed. But this is what rehearsals are for. 2 beats early!!!! How is that possible?!!

I remember singing the bass part to this in concert years ago with a choir. This was the climax to the whole performance and we'd practiced it a great deal beforehand. We got the "And plenteousness..." bit, and my mate Ian, also a bass, accidentally came in at the tenor's entry belting out "AAAAND PLENNNN..." at the top of his voice at a pitch he just couldn't handle. He absolutely butchered it! And of course half the bass section messed up their entry due to fits of giggles. Kinda ruined the majesty of the whole thing, and the conductor looked pretty cross, but I'll never forget it.
@fedeymini
@fedeymini 4 года назад
After the first time I sang this, my comment was, "Well, now I'm warmed up!" A few other strong voices agreed while the rest were catching their breath Just imagine though, with the bass "tone" even if one came in early AND sang the pitch! Drown out the ENTIRE tenor section. A director I often work with often "sacrifices" basses to sing tenor if the section is weak which it often is. Fortunately, it's never me or the low basses will sing the next lowest part (OH NO!) There was a bass in this video who was very present near the end (at least that's when I noticed) on the last "And plenteousness within thy palaces". A beautiful piece Cheers!

Why do some women wear decorated sombreros to church, effectively blocking the view of those behind?! I thought that such bonnetry was reserved for the race track! Great music and superb English ceremonial practice, unique in the world. I cannot agree with Julien Girard - I thought that the teenaged lads singing the first Vivat provided an excellent contrast to the higher trebles. And anyway, horrible sounds do not come out of Westminster Abbey when the Master of Music is in control.

Go check your facts, mummy's over-indulged little know-all. Women's suffrage became law in New Zealand in 1893, decades before pongoland or anywhere else was sufficiently courageous to do likewise. And I don't give a donkey's dork what females wear on their bonces to church or a school bazaar for that matter. I was posing a tongue-in-cheek rhetorical question. Suck it up, sweetie.

I do agree about the hats especially Camilla's, but she always wears a hat twice the size of the Queens. Well, I guess she can enjoy it, it may be the only crown she will ever wear. I don't think she realizes that a little humility goes a very long way with Her Majesty. And the "Vivat" is a typical Anglicization of the Latin word. They do all the time. We'll just have to live with it.

Especially Cowmilla. She always has to outdo Her Majesty who is always so stylist, even if a little understated... The fabric of Her Majesty`s outfit was luxurious, regal, classic and definitely a cut-above...... One good point about Cowmilla´s hats is they hide a lot of her ugly mug.
