This month, we’re happy to announce that the wizard of wax, the viscount of vinyl, the lord of the long play, Charles Kirmuss, will be delving into the theory and practice of cleaning our precious records. Just as J.R. Boisclair at Wally Tools upended conventions about cartridge setup, Charles has been equally disruptive in challenging the myths and misrepresentations of record care that have accumulated over several decades. Using his $120,000 Keyence VX-7000 digital imager to support his findings, Charles has turned the record-cleaning ritual into a science. Our friend Michael Fremer headlined an article this way: “If Kirmuss Audio's Record Cleaning Ideas Are Correct Are Everyone Else's Wrong?” Let’s listen to Charles and decide for ourselves. His presentation will cover the production process, the reproduction mechanics when stylus meets groove, and how to get the best sound out of our records. We will, of course, have a Q&A session, so bring your questions and be prepared to learn.

At 36:22, speaking about the left-over from a song. I disagree. When someone hears this, it's because the audio tape has "picked-up" from a previous layer on the tape reel. Tapes use metallic oxides. Metallic oxides are subject to becoming magnetized. That's the purpose of magnetic tape, after all. When a tape has been spooled onto the reel. it's done in layers, and an upper layer is adjacent to the part of the tape immediately below it. The upper tape on the reel becomes partially magnetized by the the layer immediately below it. This is how it is common to hear the soft "ghost" recording that precedes the actual recording. When the tape is used to create the masters and stampers, this can often be audible in the masters.

At 22:39 into the video. I know that Acoustic Sounds/Quality Record Pressings punches out the label area before recycling the rest of the vinyl. Just thought that I'd mention this because I think that it's important to know what a person is getting. #acousticsounds #qrp #qualityrecordpressings

Depends on price paid, some actually chop up the entire record! Paper, ink and all! Ouch!

You too can test your 40 or 120 khz ultrasonic by creating your own aluminum foil records. Many manufacturers say they use ultrasonic cavitation. The video validates why cleaning solutions do not work , how to make sure your cleaning agent is pvc vinyl safe and shows that records skewered on a rotisserie style support spaced 1/4 inch apart negates the effectiveness of cavitation. Tests anyone can perform at home

Very informative and helpful. Very glad I purchased a Kirmuss machine. I think I need to download any updated instructions as the regimen seems to have changed since I acquired my machine a year ago. I have still been misting!

TPC pellet company shown at about the 8:30 mark is based in Thailand, not Taiwan.

HQ is actually in Vietnam. Minority ownership on Thailand. A group in Taiwan mixes additional materials for various industries.

Proof is in the pudding. Some restoration of records brought in to restore. 1. Restoration of a Frank Sinatra Record. Mexico City Nov 2023 KirmussAudio event. Before restoration: Lots of noise. Crackles abound. Sound Muddled. The record was processed before in a 120 KHz ultrasonic. Processed 5 times. Before in a vacuum based cleaning system, so I was told. Video Before Kirmuss Processing: ru-vid.com/show-UCq6s2TT2s7SgZu_7F1D37SQ Video After Kirmuss Restoration: Increase in signal and frequency response, pops gone. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_RZ50MIPtVA.html 2. From our record restoration event in Mexico City in front of Billboard Magazine and with an invitation only meeting of Discos two weeks ago held at the Margules factory, very nice of him, a record that was brought in that was processed prior with a vacuum cleaning system saw these results: Before Kirmuss; ru-vid.com-L2gIqQ3nok After Kirmuss: ru-vid.com_6_fhGWMBjM

What can I use to clean and renovate 78s other than the distilled water since alcohol cannot be used (or can your 1.4 oz. in 6 quarts water be considered safe)? P.S. I have used a Magic Eraser for over 1,500 hours with my prior Benz Ruby 3 to clean my stylus without a problem (cantilever change/damage). Maybe I'm just very delicate in using it.

The alcohol we add in its small percentage is to kill live or dormant fungus.

What’s up with the 40ml of 70% isopropyl alcohol. And why does the machine warp my records.

I don't speak for anyone else. I've never had an issue with my Kirmuss KA-RC-1 damaging my records. I use mine frequently after bringing home new or used LPs. The highly-diluted mixture of the 70% Isopropyl alcohol in distilled water is an approved practice by the RIAA to clean LPs and remove contaminants and prior cleaner residue. In my experience, it has never harmed any of my records.

The IPA is used to kill fungus that is live or dormant. Not used for cleaning. You need to stop using the machine, last cycle, when the small red light appears to the right of the long red bar. Stop totally when this light flashes. It cannot warp records. This said polystyrene records need to be watched closely. The warm water as it heats up will see the records twist, so one needs to stop, change out water with cooler water, then continue. A polystyrene record will return to its "rest" or "pressed" position.
