My girlfriend was jogging on Ocean Beach in SF in 1970, and Ron McClure, running in the other direction, grabbed her and gave her a hug. When I came by a little later, they were walking together and holding hands. She said he was playing with Charles Lloyd at Mandrake's Jazz, in Berkeley. i really loved Lloyds playing and wanted to see Jarrett, but didn't want to lose my girlfriend, so didn't go. She split a few days later, Thats life.

Such exceptional music for such young players. Keith was 23 and Charles was 30.

Attended one of my first live jazz concerts as a kid 14:20 at UCSC in 1968. This was the band! Charles Lloyd has been a major influence ever since.🎉

I saw the earlier version of this group (with cecil mcbee on bass) in the mid-sixties in los angeles at ucla royce hall and a club called marty's on the hill...scared me half to death. No one was playing like this at the time except miles davis ( herbie, wayne, tony, ron ) was lucky enough to see them too at shelly's manne hole in hollywood. Also scared the living daylights out of me too! The sixties for changes in music : jazz, rock, and society were incredible for most of the baby boomer generation!!

I was at those gigs also,at Marty's On The Hill and at Shelly's Manne-Hole.Those were outstanding venues to hear the music at.I saw that splendid Quartet many times; including the Pacific Jazz Festival at Costa Mesa Fairgrounds.

Gorgeous. God, Lloyd's sound on tenor sounds ike a beautiful mixture of Coltrane and Getz. Beautiful. And Keith's solo on Love ship!

Blessed to hear this group LIVE 2 months later at Newport Pop Festival in Costa Mesa, CA. What a treat. Back when us hippie audiences and musical neophytes were getting turned on to soooooo much new art. I never get enough Charles Lloyd, et al.

Hearing this vintage edition of the Charles Lloyd group with Keith Jarrett, Doug McClure and Jack Dejohnette, I got to tell you all, I am still reeling from a performance I heard LIVE of Charles Lloyd at the Jacksonville Florida Jazz Festival a couple of years ago. Charles was on Tenor and his TONE was revealing as ever, thank you very much, Charles.

Man born in 71 I missed out on seeing these master musicians in such intimate settings. Must have been awe inspiring. By the way the facial expressions and passion in which Jarrett plays is amazing. Living in Europe now I am quite envious of the people in places like Copenhagen who got to see the wave of jazz musicians migrate over.

The Jazz Workshop on Boylston Street was a very special place in the the late 1960's early 1970's. We saw many fine Jazz artists weave their magic there. Some that come readily to mind: Bill Evans, Dizzy Glilespiie, Jeremy Steig. My oh my!! There was also the unforgettable Lenny's on the Turnpike. They would book in The Count Basie Band or Miles for a full week! Solid. Gary Burton was teaching at the Berklee School of Music. They would stage "Student Faculty Recitals" at the school and full concerts at New England Life Hall. There were occasional Sunday evening concerts at the Old West Church on Cambridge Street too. Man those were good times. Did we really know how good they were?.

I like everyone's playing here along with not being able to hear Jarrett's nasal whining and complaints about audience members coughing.
@alansenzaki4148
@alansenzaki4148 5 лет назад
Thats funny. The same thing happened to me at a solo jarrett concert. He actually stopped playing got up from the stool walked to the front and like a conductor told everyone to cough now! He was a self riteous ass hole at the time and the audience was shocked! My friend and i got up and left went across town to see stanley turrentine to hear some real music!
@MX-S
@MX-S 5 лет назад
@@alansenzaki4148 ... So all of a sudden he didn't make real music anymore because the musician had a bad day ? ... Or you deliberately went over to see faux music ? ... I know that was a bad experience, but come on --- we wouldn't be here if the guy wasn't phenomenal ...
@alansenzaki4148
@alansenzaki4148 5 лет назад
@@MX-S First of all Stanley Turrentine is'nt faux music. Turrentine was a major musician. I was'nt criticizing jarretts music.He is an incredible musician and i have several of his albums. I've seen him when he was with miles davis and i saw miles get pretty pissed at him staring him down when he was throwing one of his tantrums not playing hard enough. If your a professional musician and paying a decent amount of your money to support him i don't need to be treated with disrepect. He was being an asshole, and from the comment section there have been others who were treated the same way. Unfortunately his fame went to his head.

This is Charles Lloyd's group. I get that Keith Jarrett is great, etc., but you have to respect the fact that Jarrett was working for Charles Lloyd, not the other way around. Everyone knows who Keith Jarrett and how great he was and is, but again, Charles Lloyd is the employer here and it should be presented as such, all videos with this line up. You and others should really be more aware of these things.

He is backward. Coltrane comes at you. Lloyd draws you in. Parker Bops or accents the top note of the phrase. Lloyd backs off the top not of the phrase and swallow the dynamic or articulation.

In addition to being a very overrated jazzman, Lloyd is the other of totally stupid and laughable quotes such as this one: ''Women are as connected to music as women are to Africa. Women are all connected to the land and music is connected to the land. The drums come from Africa and have supernatural powers. Women and drums must be respected. I'm a shaman, I go out into nature, I talk to the trees and plants'' or ''I am a shaman, I go out into nature, I talk to the trees and plants'' ....LOL!
