D B did not live up to the very standard set forth in Cost of Disciplship!?! The only "standard" D B posited was that of Christ himself. D B would be the first to agree with you that he does not, because he cannot, live up to that standard!! Have you not read his Cost of Discipleship? Know you nothing of his life? Know you the difference between what he called "cheap grace" and "costly grace"? The former is the kind of grace of the bourgeois Christian--content, complacent, disengaged--whereas the latter is the kind of grace that may cost you your life. It is the grace of martyrs. D B teaches that when Christ calls you to follow that you will suffer persecution and perhaps death. Costly grace is suffering, sacrifice, sorrow, and even death. If you know anything at all about D B's life, he underwent all those for the sake of--for the survival of--his Christian faith and the faith of Christians everywhere. He took the cross of others upon himself, just as Christ took up the cross for all of us. Where else do you think D B's eyes were fixed when he was hanged, if not not on Him?
