In the book Dante’s inferno, one of the souls he runs into while he’s visiting hell was a famous pope. What’s interesting about this is that Dante while talking with this popes soul, he remembers that the pope is actually still alive on the earth and so he is confuse how he could be speaking with the pope soul while visiting hell. The popes soul then goes on to explain, that when he was ‘alive’ on earth he invited a man to his home and murdered the man and that when you do something so horrific and unforgivable your soul is sent to hell and a demon is allowed to take its place in your body. So everyone still thinks it’s you living your life but it’s not, it’s actually a demon now in why at used to be your body pretending to be you. That’s an interesting concept that had me thinking lately bc I hadn’t heard of that idea before.
