saw charley a few years ago in cambridge , he never sang this song , when we met him after the concert and he was signing various items , i said to him Charley you never sang my mums fav song ,just between you and me , and the great man stopped signing and sang to my mum,
Wow! He sure was wonderful! When I was a little girl I wanted to marry him. Haha. Memories. I loved his song Crystal Chandeliers. What a kind and humble man he was.
Charley Pride has 39 number one country songs. That shows that if you're good the country audience will approve regardless of race. Merle Haggard has only 38.
My daddy, God rest his soul, would be 96 years old now. I believe he bought every album Charley Pride ever made. Charley was his favorite country singer and he is certainly my favorite as well.
When Lloyd came out of retirement none of the current breed of producers would return his calls. He's simply one of the best musicians on the planet and they're blowing him off.
Wow !!!! Could Charlie Pride ever sing . It is unbelievable how on of the greatest singers passed away it was so unfair what happened to him ... R.i.p. Charlie Pride you will be forever missed .
This is REAL country music. Not the crap they air on TV and radio nowadays. Where are all the REAL shows and radio stations that play REAL artists like this. I wouldn't give a plug nickel for all the supposed "stars" that peddle their crap today.
@@gregtreadway3142 Welk had Lynn Anderson on his show and she sung her top hit "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden". Having her on the show proved that his show was quality!
You hit on something I' ve been thinking about a lot lately. The Greatest Generation. They use that term for a lot of things, but I don't think anyone has applied it to music as it should be. Born in 1946. same as Dolly, Linda and quite a few others. As kids, we listened to top 40 radio, and many oi the popular top 40 survey sites will back this up - we were exposed to such a variety of music that way. And during that time, there were a lot of great country artists that topped the charts. It was also blues, soul, movie themes, some holdover easy listening, and soon Tom Rush and Gordon Lightfoot. My point is that all these people resonate with me. And when I get in a position to listen to a lot of their music, I always get the same reacion. I've seem them on TV shows. many in person, and have appreciated them all over the spectrum. Because to me it all comes down to the same thing - the Greatest Generation of music. If you ever saw the Rock and Roll Graffiti show on the Nashville Network, you would get a sense of it. I'm maybe saying from 1952 - By 1970 anything from AM radio was off my radar screen except for a very few that sounded older. I'm not quite sure where my country cutoff would be - early 80s probably. All this babbling is to say that I see all these people as one, and love them very much. They are my life.
A class act, as are all of Charley's. His bands were flooded with some of the best musicians around. Welk's band is no exception, Green is remarkable. Re: today's country - If the song doesn't start with either a steel or a fiddle, there is good chance, maybe 90% (some piano), that it isn't real country. If you can't dance to it, or understand the words (and the words make sense and reflect times which most of us have experienced), it probably is not real country. It is interesting that many of today's "artists", who tend to sing the throw away, disposable songs being offered, almost always get a solid round of applause if they brave out an old favorite, one which will continue to be played 30 years from now, and remembered, both for the melody and word for word.
Back in the 70's Charley Pride music was and still is very loved in the Caribbean Islands. I grew up listening to it a lot from my parents. Hope to see you on stage Mr. Pride.
peter babooram I live in Texas now and people are shocked when I tell them country music is played a lot in people’s homes and bars in the Caribbean. And very old country music too. Haha
Charley toured Scandinavia in 1972, and I saw him then. The show was recorded by our national radio station and broadcast some time later, and I recorded it on my open reel tape recorder. He had a show in Gothenburg, Sweden, and after the show they went out for a meal. The restaurant had a band, and when Charley and the Pridesmen were asked to play a song they did - for the rest of the night out of sheer love of music. Great guys.
Charley Pride, the best ballad singer in classic country! Lloyd Green one of the top "steelers" along with players like Weldon Myrick, Hal Rugg, Curly Chalker, Buddy Emmons, Bud Charlton, Dick Overby, and others. The pedal steel can really enhance a country song! Charley's voice blends in perfectly with the pedal steel guitar.
This was a real game changer for pedal steel playing Mr. Green can Pick & Grin ! Many years later 1989 Marty Stuart does a picture perfect cover of this pedal steal and all & he adds some nice backing vocals reminiscent of the Anita Kerr sing you hear on all the R.C.A. records particularly Chet Atkins sessions . Thank God for the Author of the the song Cowboy Jack Clement Pick & Grin LoL
My parents always played country music in the house. I heard it my entire childhood and the one singer that struck a chord with my 9 year old ears was Charlie Pride singing this particular song and later Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’. I became a lifelong fan for the next half century. Rest in peace Mr. Pride.
Oh the Great Charlie Pride - been a fan since 1967 - 8 yrs old! All his music along with other greats from that era: Merle, Roger Miller, Faron Young and Mr Ray Price - many more - on the Jutebox at our Restaurant - Great artists - GREAT MUSIC! GOD BLESS YOU CHARLIE PRIDE - so good music and good man!
I grew up with his music, one of mom's faves, and sometimes it makes me cry. A country singer that looked like daddy? I remember daddy was watching a baseball game on TV, and the camera focused in on Charley in the audience. My sister and I freaked, "CHARLEY PRIDE! CHARLEY PRIDE!" and we waved at the TV...he waved back, and we *really* freaked! Takes me back to road trips to my aunt's over the Cascades, listening to his 8-tracks in the car...
I just always Loved the way that his voice fit the Music, Everybody always says that there will never be another Elvis, but I also say that there will never be another Charley Pride ether. What a wonderful artist He was and will always be.
I'm so sad , I love you Charlie , through the years I've laughed and cried and always loved your music, RIP one of the Greatest entertainers ever, I saw you in Branson Missouri in Sep of 1998 was the best 🌹
Watching Lloyd Green play is almost like watching Roy Orbson singing. Listen to all the magical music he's making, but watch him, he hardly moves at all. It's all so easy for him.
I don't know why today's country feels like it has to compete with pop music to the point that there's hardly a difference. A person says below in the comments that all today's country's is pop music with a little twang. I would think that country musicians would know by now that there will always be country music fans, and they can do their own thing and still be loved by their fans.
One of the best Country singers of all time --- Love his music RIP Charley Pride 😌 He was one of the greats in Country music Nothing like the real Country music, Charlie is one of the very best ever I love that song so much so beautiful and sweet and romantic song great song I love Charlie Pride so much 🎶🎶❤️💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💗💗💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋🦊🎵🤩🎸😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯😘💯💯🎼😊👍🥰🎧⭐😍☺️💘🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🔥
I love love love this clip. Funniest thing is when Lloyd starts up on the intro and the bass player isn't ready which causes the three first notes on the bass to be fumblin' about untill he catches up. Truly wonderful song, thank you so much Charlie and friends!
Give credit not only to Lloyd Green on the steel guitar but also to The men in Lawrence Welk’s band who backed Charley Pride on this song: Buddy Clark on bass, Buddy Merrill on acoustic guitar, Neil Levang on electric guitar, and Johnny Klein on drums.
I loved him years and years ago n i still love him....i know every song by HEArt. N i can play them on my guitar....rip Charley....u music lives on!!!🎵🎶🎼🎸🎸🎸🎼🎵🎶🎸🎸🎸😘😘💖💖💖
I thought that the music itself (yhus dong) was unique and I lived it. lots of people don't know, but country music was bery popular in the Caribbean and African countries in the 60s and 70s. not so much today but still is by older folks. Jim Reeves was one if the most popular along with Charlie Pride and others.
Rest In Peace Mr. Pride!! You will live forever through your songs!! Join the choir of country singers in that great beyond! You’ll be missed for sure!🙏♥️
Charley Pride has 39 number one country songs. That shows that if you're good the country audience will approve regardless of race. Merle Haggard has only 38.
This music takes me back to a time in my life when everything was carefree and life was simple. I can close my eyes and hear this song on my grandmother's old Victrola. Thank you Mr Pride.
