I think the real meaning is that Charlie’s “good deeds” were superficial and only really benefited him. Like, he didn’t get into heaven cuz he was kinda a dick. He just sugarcoated it.
@@CIPHERINATOROne of the things that is interesting is that he "judged with no pretense" and "avoided all the little things that were hard to ask". He didn't give his wife a card and rose each month out of kindness. He did it so that he would seem like a good person. He *bought* love from the people around him. That's why he begs to see someone who knows him at the gates of Heaven and Hell, so they could convince the angels that he was a good person because he was the one that, practically bought them.
