www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com - STUDY SAX WITH SCOTT PADDOCK
In this video, we break down a famous Charlie Parker jazz lick and learn how to play it in different keys. The lick can be heard in tons of Charlie Parker tunes, and has become a well recognized part of the jazz language. Utilizing the use of scale degrees, Scott breaks down the lick into easy to understand pieces.

For this very helpful video, you get my subscription. Thank you for doing this with the scale degrees rather than the letters of the notes. I lean on the scale degrees rather than the note names to identify intervals by ear. I will get this lick learned in several keys. Again I thank you and look forward to more videos like this!!!

Hey Joe! Yeah man, that's the way to do it by the numbers. Guitar, piano, and bass players do almost everything by numbers, but I think because most horn players learn by note names in school band we have to circle back around to think that way. I'm definitely going to be doing some more of these!

Great tutorials. I returned to playing the alto after a four decades gap ! Now at the far end of my seventies but ever optimistic that my fingers will continue to work. But not as fast as the greats Parker and Cannonball ! Thanks

Hey Scott, great video, I really liked your idea to use the note numbers within the scale rather than then the notes themselves. I hope you will do more jazz licks, maybe something from Cannonball Adderley?

Great stuff mate..finally back into the alto again after 20yrs..your teaching methods and explanation on all fronts are inpiring from tone quality , techniques and transposing to a key. Can you suggest an octive jumping type lick i can add to my practice routine as overtones / subtones now are heaps cleaner and way better thanks to you..cheers

How do you like the mouthpiece? Can it play warm or is it mostly for cutting through?
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 6 лет назад
It cuts really hard, but with some practice you can reel it in and play soft and fuzzy with it. Check out my video on Subtones and you'll hear me playing in that style with it. I actually just got a new shipment of them in today and have a few for sale. If you're interested in more info send me a message through scottpaddock.com

How does your horn sound so "high"? Mine sounds completely different
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 5 лет назад
It's the amount of air that I put into it along with the equipment I use. In the saxophone world we refer to sound as bright or dark.

Hi Scott, I envy your sound and am wishing I had an alto like yours. I play a Selmer super action 80 Alto, and was wondering two things. First is , how would you compare my Selmer to your sax, and the second is , In the movie BIRD, the first club scene shows Charlie at his best, and while I can imitate almost anything Parker does, I cannot figure out what he is doing in that scene. It sounds like he,s just chord surfing, but when I try it, it just doesn,t sound right. So, any helpful hints would be appreciated. And if you get stuck for things to teach, maybe you could do a video, on this.
@ScottPaddock
@ScottPaddock 6 лет назад
Hey David! Thanks for the message. I haven't watched the Bird movie in several years, so I don't remember that scene. If you can post a link I'll check it out. Selmers have never worked for me. They've always felt stuffy and like I couldn't get enough air through them. I've had other friends who love them, but for me I need something that blows a bit more open.

Here's a video I did on the horn I play to give you an idea of what I prefer in a sax: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1-PXYtU09nI.html

Thanks Scott, I really like your video,s especially the ones on the modes. I spent a lot of hours trying to figure them out with a book I borrowed from the library , but I learned more in 10 minutes with your video, than all the hours spent reading the book. I will try to figure out a way to send you a link, of the piece I mentioned in the movie Bird.
