An amazing interview with tenor sax great Charile Rouse from May of 1985. Sadly, this interview is incomplete and although I hope to find the last cassette of it (among 2000 others) someday, I felt this was to great to not publish now. Charlie talks with Leigh about all the legends of his time including Billy Eckstine, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and more including how he got on Monk's band and what that was like. Priceless.

for me , Rouse was the best tenor voice for Monk´s music. The other guys did not go as deeply into learning Monk´s music-But they were great Charlie Rouse is one of the great tenors. I dug him when i was a teen and dig him now when i´m 73.

Don`t forget to mention Trane and Griffin with Monk. But I knew Charlie best - he was my close friend, came by my house several times.

This is one of the few recorded interviews of Rouse. (Another notable aural and visual interview is in the great Monk documentary, "Straight No Chaser")Having had the pleasure of knowing Charlie for a few years, this gives you a sample of his warmth and kindness. I still think about (and of course, listen to,with unending love and admiration)Mr Rouse, over 32 years since his passing

YEP.The title of his CD "Unsung Hero" (the LP's "Yeah!" & half an LP he split with Seldon Powell Called "Wew Paid Our Dues" was the perfect choice.Monk was lucky and so were we but you wonder if he might have gotten more solo LP's if not the longest serving sideman with Monk.Great tone superb phrasing.A class act all the way
