Charlotte and Baby Boy

Charlotte had her calf this morning...a nice little boy with pink on his nose :) Follow along as we go retrieve the family from the lane.
For a little background info, Charlotte is one of our oldest cows. We had actually decided to not breed her the last time we thought we saw her in heat (age and mobility is becoming troublesome for her), but when Lydia had her checked last month, we were quite surprised to find her with calf, bred over the winter. Thankful she is well and the baby is healthy!

Tks for sharing. Charlotte is one Healthy looking cow! Her little calf has a good set of lungs on him too.. tks for the ride along there and back. Its good for a tractor ride and a day little that.

we microchip all our pigs, about 3 weeks after they are weaned they get the chip and are put into the computer, picture is taken if they are females at different stages of their growth. the dead hogs during the extreme heat we had the microchip gives reason for their death and this time all were heat related. other issues the chips tell us have saved the life of many many pigs in the past few years. birthing is just one thing the chips tell us, the exact day plus 5 days in advance their number comes up as to watch or time to move them into a farrowing pen. same goes for breeding . the sows are in different groups some need more time to recover from last litter and we forfit getting them bred for 1 or 2 months. all sows must go though a alley way to get to the feed and any ready for breeding are taken out by the robots, those are put in a single pen with a male each are scanned so we have record who the daddy was.

I can remember years ago the cow that calved came back to the barn all alone and then we had to search for the calf lol, back then we only had Holsteins here in Canada, Jersey's on the other hand will come when ya carry the calf more easily then Holsteins do. Is Charlotte related to that very old cow ya guys had? I reckon that old cow had a few heifers in her 18 years

No, I don't think Charlotte was related to Lois, at least not directly..... Lois did have a couple heifers that Lydia could probably name. I think one was Polly who we lost years ago quite surprisingly during calving it seemed. I say that because we had her out west for calving and one day found her dead with the calf's legs just starting to come out. We had another cow way back who calved in the woods. We found her when she didn't come in with the herd but didn't realize she had calved because the calf was not with her. We got her allllllll the way back to the barn (practically the other side of the property from where we found her), and upon examination found she had no calf inside anymore. Back to the woods we went, where we found the calf in the corn on the other side of the fence. Another time it was an Ayrshire cow who had calved out west of the barn, the calf had slipped under the fence before we discovered her. Fortunately the cow was tipping us off by standing at the fence yelling. That calf gave us a run for our money.... literally. We chased her until she and I were worn out enough for me to get a hand on her.

as of today august 1 we have 37,404 pigs total in all barn, deaths in past 24 hours 1 and new piglets born 68 , today 41 sows need to be bred, Alaska highway might reopen today so might be looking for truckers who work as pairs and are willing to go that route. since both Canada and usa have time limits for driving big rigs hauling livestock the trucks can not stop, 2nd driver takes over when 1st driver hours are reached.

Please educate us as to why the Alaska highway was closed? Or am I forgetting something? I do that easily these days.

@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm wild fire smoke or bush fire right up to the roads. The town of jasper alberta which is in a national part burnt a few hundred homes and business, don't remember exact amount but that town depends of tourists to make its money and with the town now closed to tourists business will all be hurting this winter. i don't want to sound nasty but last year in BC 49 of 60 fires were caused by americans camping out in the bush not in a public campsite.
