Charlotte City Council’s $650M renovation plan for Carolina Panthers Bank of America Stadium 

The one issue people seem to be missing... is that the money is funded from an existing tourism tax... that the state mandates it has to be used for projects to support tourism... it's not an added tax for taxpayers

Even with all their success, voters in Kansas City rejected the Chiefs (and Royals) request for money for a stadium.

A few thoughts: The new renovations are going to raise prices for any and all events, to the point that ordinary people are going to be priced out. You can argue there’s an “overall economic benefit” with increased tourism revenue for the city, but it’s a benefit that increases the wealth gap between the haves and the have-nots. You’re gonna see a bunch of Bank of America VPs and their families in the stands, and that’s it. Not saying the stadium didn’t need renovating, it’s 29 years old after all, but that will be an unfortunate consequence of these upgrades. Also, people have been moving to and visiting Charlotte in droves over the past several years, so I don’t think these renovations increase that traffic. Putting a money incentive in place if the Panthers do better would be the worst idea because it would cause Tepper to get even more involved in the team operations. Any apparent restraint Tepper is showing in meddling with the football side of things would immediately be lost and we’d go back to how things were in 2023. I understand the argument that you don’t want to get into a staring contest with a billionaire who’s nuclear option is moving your favorite team, but I wish the city of Charlotte would have pushed harder for a more equitable split of the financing. Maybe $400M for each side seems fair. One commenter posted that there’s a city tourism tax in place that will mitigate the effects of these renovations on the average taxpayer, but that money has to come from somewhere - if more money is being spent on tourism, maybe that takes money away from public education, public works, etc. People will be paying for this, whether directly or indirectly. If cities start to band together and agree to stop giving tax incentives to people who obviously don’t need them, then maybe you’d have the first step toward the rich paying their fair share in taxes.

let’s not act like there’s not going to be plenty of jobs created bc of this or multiple more events which means more revenue for the city. i get we hate david tepper but can we stop crying about everything?! not even tim just this fan base jesus christ. yall going to be the same ones loving the renovations when they’re complete be happy we aren’t the chiefs who have to keep their SHIT facility

I heard councilman state the income to city from those 40 dates at stadium is a windfall of billion dollars a year. Helps tax base, local business and having major sports city. Money come from a pre-existing tax that has been in place for many years for services such as this. 2% of a pre-existing tax on parking hotels and restaurants in the city
