Boy Graham I just found my old Google account I had looked and looked for you under Graham, no luck (probly spelt your name wrong) Well, I am so glad to be back and I love your attention on this. People are Only Now starting to GET that animals feel pain too. kat,ct
If an ordinary owner did this in the UK they more than likely would but it seems when those at the top do it it is overlooked because they are not to be questioned and even when it is known the industry closes ranks, and that is all the top is, an industry that abuses the good nature of animals that are reluctant to fight back. This is not the first time I would call her abusive, there are videos of her riding with a tight flash noseband and extreme contact to the mouth is covered in foam and the tongue is blue and flapping to the side, then there was an incident at a top competition where she left bloody spur marks, her excuse that time was that the horse had a thin skin and had just been clipped, the only punishment was a few docked points.
Absolutely agree. Imagine a friend walking along with you, carrying a stick, hitting you randomly and you never know why or when. Along with the unnecessary pain-would anyone walk with trust and comfortably? I just don`t get it, but people want circus. A horse relaxed , in balance and in harmony whith his rider is just boring to them. We must not stop calling out horse abuse, wherever we may encounter it. If only horses had a sound for pain... Thank you for your statement! Greetings from Germany
THAT woman should automatically be disqualified from competing in the equestrian events in the Olympics. And charged with animal abuse. Disgusting!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for continuing to keep these issues in the public eye. I can't watch videos of horses (or any animals for that matter) being treated harshly. It just makes me feel helpless and so very angry. P.S. Mocha looks so grown up!! A beautiful mare.
Graeme, you are my hero. Thank you for speaking out, calling out the abusers on their behavior, and for loving these sweet, vulnerable animals and serving as their voice in such an articulate manner and with great illustration. We appreciate you from around the world.
Very well said, after our short conversation on here the other day about Charlotte Du Jardin I have made the decision not to watch any of the equestrian events at the Olympics. I'd rather watch you and your horses and watch someone being kind and respectful to their animals. I don't watch many equestrian events these days anyway as I don't like seeing any animals getting hurt. If the riders get hurt then it's their decision to be doing that and they know the risks, the horses don't have a choice or know the risks. Lovely seeing how well Mocha and Luke are doing together
Just to see you Graeme surrounded and even hugged by your old friend Luke and baby Mocha a BC Wildie you strongly made your point. Cheers from Silvana from South America Uruguay 🇺🇾
Growing up in the 70's I watched every horse sport on TV. I was amazed at the horsemanship and the strength of these stunning animals. Little did I know what went into such extensive 'training' and the hazards of the horses participating in racing, show jumping, dressage, rodeo sports, Big Lick style events, etc. That was 50 years ago and my eyes are now fully open to the torture and absolute abuse they were enduring. 50 YEARS... imagine, and still this is happening. Why is this not completely stopped, I hazard a guess there is a lot of money involved in most of these events. Money and prestige, what a terrible thing greed is. Thank you, for your continued support for horses, they deserve nothing less than what you provide your horses, a safe and peaceful, loving life.
Money has bought a lack of laws around this, money has purchased horses that people can dish out their anger on and money buys silence. So yes, you've got it, prestige/social status and lots of money is the prime reason.
I don’t understand animal abuse. It breaks my heart to see the animals suffer for the convenience of human entertainment. Thank you for sharing this message. I hope more people come forward to stop this behavior.
I can only agree with what you are saying. I mean, it's not HARD to not abuse animals. The punishment for doing so are ridiculous, needs a massive overhaul. Especially when it comes to sports.
"It happens because everyone around it says yes, that's fine. Or they say nothing at all." --- EXACTLY. This kind of abuse has been hidden in plain sight for the entire history of equine sports, and it is sickening. My fear is that the spotlight will shine on a handful of riders, and not the industry as a whole. My fear is that it will once again just get swept under the rug.
This message goes to ALL sports involving horses. Learn to love the animal for what it is and not for the ribbons or money you can get from them. Love to all 4 legged creatures❤
I have rescued a few horses that have been abused and it takes a lot of gentle loving care to get their trust. Some have been so badly abused that it takes years to earn their trust. I have a horse that would go into a total panic just getting the halter on her and she finally accepted me loving on her after 5 years. She is a pasture pet because I don’t ever want her traumatized again and she is close to 20 years old.
Being good to the horse and caring for it's mental and physical health is what TRUE Dressage is about ie look up Nuno Oliveira, NOT this current circus of "Modern Dressage". Thankyou for your calm and concise observations and people a Horse's skin is actually more sensitive that ours as are the bottom of their hooves believe it or not!!
I’m going to be honest I’ve seen more abuse to horses at the Olympic level riding than beginner horse level riding, people who don’t know how to treat horses properly are kinder than some professionals. Charlotte was very calm in that video it was not out of anger, she’s done it before and I’m not sure why people are so shocked that this rider hurt horses as she’s had issue with spur marks and bloody mouths in the past it’s not new behaviour for her. And what makes the beating even worse and this is why I’ll never accept the argument of “it doesn’t hurt me so it doesn’t hurt the horse” a horse has much thinner skin than a human does and they have way more nerve endings than humans do as well, so it’s much easier to bruise a horse and the pain they feel is greater than a humans, horses just don’t react cus there prey animals and they don’t feel safe expressing pain, or they do react to pain however most people are blind to horses pain expression unfortunately.
This behavior is absolutely heartbreaking and despicable! Of course, in her “apology” letter she failed to make any mention of how sorry she is for hurting horse. What made this even more disgusting was the snickering/laughing in the background as she’s whipping this beautiful and helpless creature. It’s very obvious to anyone with a brain that this was not an isolated incident - - it’s a pattern of behavior. She should not be allowed to have a horse anymore. She makes me sick!
Thank you for your beautiful soulful essence, appreciation of your gorgeous horses, and speaking the truth in such an eloquent way !! Charlottes actions hold an ugly mirror to daily normalization of abuse, pain and suffering to and of horses. We all can transmute this ugly tragic reality into a call for change and action... we all must individually and collectively stop abuse and suffering !!
You are so absolutely correct! The horse just wasn't understanding what she wanted in the first place and whipping it in no way makes it any more clear. She has clearly lost her way and now wants results instantly and at any cost. Training dressage movements should be a very slow process completely based on what fitness level and lesson level the horse is at . The fact is any abuse on any animal is so unessesary and creates a slew of other problem which now have to be worked through. This horse has now learned an entirely different lesson... that going into the arena will lead to pain, that getting the cue to do that movement will result in pain, and so the horse will react in fear and avoidance. How does this help in any way? When we ride, even if it's just on trails and not in any competition we want a happy, willing partner, that enjoys cooperating with us. We want them to enjoy the experience and being with us as much as we do with them. Unfortunately the FEI has decided in their "wisdom" that she deserves a 6 month ban for this very obvious abuse and that is just shameful! Abusing these horses is not the norm and not tolerated by most trainers and riders because it's cruel and plain just does not work. We have to come down especially hard on the heros out there caught doing it so it doesn't become normalized in any way.
You can't ignore that the FEI is run by horse abusers and those that are complicit in it. They have to be careful who they call out in fear of who might call them out. Also, they have a truly warped sense of right and wrong towards horses and I'm convinced that they are full of people that actually don't even like horses
@@StableHorseTraining run by 'em,condoned by 'em and full of 'em. More and more calls for change and real teeth put into rules concerning horse welfare will continue to grow as more of us that love horses before the sport expose the abusers. We all need to ensure that the response is not " Don't report them, they're too powerful" but " Why haven't you reported them yet?" If you see something you owe it to the horses to say something, loud, clear and immediately.
Thank you for sharing this video. So many people think a horse doesn't feel pain like we do. Great that you showed just how sensitive horse skin is. There is so much torcher in the horse world. So sad. Please be kind to animals people.
Thank you, thank you for continuing to speak out on this...I shared this video! Animal abusers need jail time...PERIOD! People can't say its how they were raised and taught. I've shared with you before how I was raised. My family didn't think twice about abusing, neglecting or even killing animals, God forbid strays that were dumped on our property. I've never in my life had that in me, my heart is SO full of love and compassion for ALL animals. When you look into ANY animals eyes, how can you...😢
Dujardin is not the only dressage trainer doing this. It has become the norm and it is unacceptable. In the video you can hear the person taking it giggle as the horse is whipped. I am disgusted that young riders are taught abuse is ok. That they accept it.
I stopped riding as a teen after working in an abusive riding school/stable. The lady who owned it was VERY large and chose to ride in my opinion a horse way too small for her. She would be horrible to the staff and taught students to wear spurs, kick, use whips. The horses weren't given proper breaks between lessons. The final straw was when too many horses were kept in a lower field during winter, it flooded, got muddy, one of the horses got stuck in the mud and died from the struggle/injuries. I couldn't go back after that or ride. I was always taught to never use a whip or spurs and to only gently squeeze with legs. A lot of stables are really abusive and teach poor practice for the sake of time/profit. It's horrible.
I always loved watching the Olympic equestrian events. Until recently I had no idea that this terrible abuse was happening. Dressage is touted as harmonious communication between horse and ride but appears that I have been duped into believing this. This dream version of dressage might be true for a few of the competitors but it looks like this event is full of abuse. It’s just heartbreaking what humans will do for an award. As always, thank you for educating us.
I'm still figuring this out, too, but it seems like most dressage we see online or in the media is modern dressage, which is animal abuse, but classical dressage is actually harmonious communication between horse and rider, but rarely seen online.
Not too long ago some trainers were still soring the horses legs with chemicals to artificially produce an exaggerated gait in order to win. In the USA it’s also called the “big lick” When I heard about the practice, I cannot consider dressage a sport but cruel show of greed and abuse of horses. Shame on the judges who not just let it happened but awarded them medals. 😢
Whipping and hurting a horse to get a better performance is so counter productive. That horse was confused and unhappy, he wasn’t sure what was wanted and he was trying so hard to please.😢
I agree with all you have to say, my first time seeing your channel and you come over as very kind and likeable. Your horses love you, you can tell. I have had had horses all my life and really want to see that cruel woman punished for what she has done to that poor horse, and others! Have subbed to you.
Again you are the Voice for Horses 😢 It’s a nightmare for Horses when people abuse them . I hate it 😖 Horses mind and emotions are sooo sensitive. Thank you keep sharing ! Laura 💜Bear
They can’t ride without abusing their horses! Here they are at the Olympics, highest level of expertise, and they continue to abuse their horses because that is what they always do! Damn pro riders! No Olympics equestrian events! It’s horrific and needs to stop!
@@StableHorseTraining its awful, because I do think they care about horses, but you're right they care much more about themselves, money and prestige. I think that if the horse is well cared for and happy, its okay to put human fun and recreation first, we take horses on long hauls in trailers they surely would prefer to avoid among other things, for our enjoyment, but its never at the EXPENSE of the animals WELFARE. This high level competition stuff is absolutely unethical and just as bad as family vloggers and people who show and abuse their kids online for money and fame. there is no way to display the personal life of children in an ethical way, just like there is no ethical way to put the pressure of winning grand prixs and olympics on the shoulders of nonconsenting animals. humans will abuse power, and when pressure is applied, they will apply it back to the weakest and most vulnerable among them, children and animals. unfortunately, adult humans absolutely LOVE to watch children and animals do 'cute' and 'pretty' things. its evil. I think you have a very pure and respectable outlook on the equestrian world, but I have unfortunately been dazzled by the fancy dressage moves and the elegance of it all and hearing you say how you truly didnt understand it made me question my perspective. Most horses dont want to do that crap. These days I can only really enjoy watching liberty dressage work, but its also scary when I question every single method and training practice used to get the horse to that point. I just want to rescue animals and do my best to do right by them, to try to atone for the sins of my fellow humans (not in a christian puritanical sense but in a more literal sense)
Thank you Graeme for having made a video about this new public scandal being that for sur is only the tip of the iceberg and all the rest hidden, unrecognized, normalized ... horses suffer immensely all over the world ... 😢
Thanks for doing this video. All of us need to be reminded that we are stewards of the earth which means caring for and protecting the other living beings on our planet.
And they tell you they only perform “natural gaits” in dressage…so why use a whip, spurs, curbed bit? Take all these things away and see what’s really left. Thanks for your video. Luke and Mocha are adorable!
FEI doesn't care until the public cares, and most of the public doesn't care and the event gets lots of eyeballs on it. Which makes money. Watching = approval = money for the sport to continue.
I have always liked horses, even though I have only ridden a horse twice in my life. I love the way they run free whether wild or not in happy abandon. My first ever ‘good’ pencil drawing was a horse’s head in profile, that an actual artist approved of. I haven’t watched horse races at stampedes since I was little, and could understand what the trauma involved. Nor have I watched show jumping, which is just cruel in my opinion, or any horses in Olympic endeavours for many, many, many years. If a horse wants to run, jump, kick up their heals or race on their own volition, I am so very happy to watch. I frequent RU-vid sites that truly value these precious souls. And thank you very much, would rather listen to a horse chewing than a human. I also saw the news about the bloody mouthed horse now outed. There will certainly be more to come out about these abuses. A horse is not a car or a bicycle or a volleyball to be abused. I have loved this channel for years since finding you, and are proud to know you and others like you who live close to my home! 🐎🫶🏻
Thank you for speaking up for horse welfare - People who truly love horses are done with Olympians and elite professional riders. They all lack BASIC horsemanship skills , knowledge and respect towards the horse. They don't care about the horse they care about the sport and their self projection.
I just discovered you as this video showed up on my recommended and I absolutely agree!! Abusing horses is far too normalised in the horse world, I have seen too much and I'm still pretty young.. I used to go to pony club when I was younger and I saw way too much hitting and the coaches actually taught kids to spank their ponies just for simply refusing a tiny jump. I've even seen a coach riding their own horse and being really rough with the reins and hit their horse quite hard too ( I could tell the horse was in a lot of stress)... I was belittled because I was all about bitless and teaching horses with kindness.. I always felt unliked there. Now I don't really like being a part of "equestrian" things, I prefer having a small group of horsey friends with similiar views when it comes to training. My arab is an extremely sensitive horse so I stick to training him with positive reinforcement at liberty, and he loves it!
The group of people and mindset you are in is growing and growing. The abusers are running out of space to be in and soon they will be just fringe groups all looking down on those that are "too nice" to their horses.
In regards to the recent Olympian actually crying after being recorded whipping a horse, it makes me I'll. She was crying for herself because she got caught!! In my opinion she should never be allowed to compete or train again. A"slap on the wrist" is FAR from sufficient!! Children look to these people for inspiration and they REQUIRE good role models!!
👏👏 The video could be only 2 years old. I’m British & I’m disgusted by her abuse. I adored her, no more. I worked with horses as a groom & riding instructor & not once did I whip them with a lunge whip! The people are defending her are equally appalling. I’ve not had the desire to watch Grand Prix dressage for a long time because of the awful gaits, tight nose bands, blue tongues etc but after this I have absolutely no desire anymore & I haven’t watched any of the Olympics this year. It’s taken the excitement of the British 🇬🇧eventing team winning gold. I’m seeing things at eventing too though that is worrying.
Years ago I saw a male rider fail to get a clear round during a televised major show jumping event. As soon as he got out of the jumping area, he got off, grabbed the reins, and started beating his horse with a riding crop--he stopped when a bystander indicated that the TV camera was still live. I sincerely pitied any horse that he owned (like most riders at the top level of world equestrian competition his family is VERY wealthy) because this type of abuser usually does not confine their abuse to one species of animal, and other people also will be abused--it will just be more subtle.😑
I'm in my 50s and have ridden since the age of 7. I was taught the old way of horsemanship and riding. I also showed my horses into adulthood. I've been involved in many aspects of equine activity, even Standardbred racing. What I saw was that in EVERY occasion abuse was absolutely commonplace. Most of it came down to expediency for the rider/trainer. However, to bring it down to absolute basics, most people riding competitively are using horses to feed their ego. Now, humanity would not be where we are today were it not for horses, period! They have exercised patience in the extreme. Willing to partner with us and I have yet to meet a horse that is not eager to please people, if they don't wish to it is because they have been mis-handled or abused. I have seen horrible things done to horses. The equine world is rife with it! It is all coming to light now. Horses have done their bit, pun intended, they deserve to be treated with respect for their contribution! Now, via the internet I am seeing trainers that have never used ANY tack on the horses they train and they have their horses doing every single dressage maneuver any Olympian is doing! There is one difference however, the horse moves much more naturally and is relaxed and happy! It IS possible to ride competitively without abuse. As long as one takes the time to truly respect the horse and make it more fun and relaxing they are happy to do it. (All of this being said, NO competitive event that risks the safety and indeed life of the horse should be occurring anywhere! We are well beyond such ignorance! Well...we SHOULD be!!). I REALLY appreciate people like you. We MUST teach our children a more compassionate way of riding!!!
❤ yes , after over 40 years with horses and seeing disgusting treatment of these angelic souls, horses being with us at liberty is amazing. For the past few years I've watched Santi Serra, he's in Spain where I am. He has Friesans, Arabs, Appaloosas. He lets them run free before his shows. No bridles or saddles. Watched him in warm up stop 4 Frieslans immediately after some donkeys ran off . Also watch Jesse Drent in Netherlands. How he has helped a traumatised ex bull fighting horse Gaio and does liberty with his others. I pray more youngsters watch and want to learn these natural ways, respect for these amazing intelligent souls is long overdue.
I am glad you surrounded yoursel with horses that obviously love being around you and feel very safe. Luke seemed to be making the point right along with you. Don’t hit horses! This is not the first horse channel I have seen speaking out about this
There is another shot of Charlotte yanking a horses.mouth ,on a warm up ring, and calling the horse a bitch.!! Her halo has slipped forever, she has betrayed all her mentors ,and people who thought she was wonderful. She has betrayed valegro, her magnificent Olympic horse. She has a young daughter how will she explain her cruelty to her!! The other so called lady ,that punched the grey pony ,was a primary school teacher ,she was sacked. Horrible woman. Thank you for your channel you're horses are lovley X❤
She followed her mentors, the horse world is thick with these people and all those that allow it to happen. The FEI is the most complicit to be honest and should be completely replaced with a group of people that like horses as an animal and not a way to get money and trophies and ribbons etc.
Charlotte's mentor is Carl hester, she had been with him for years. Now ,he has condemned her cruelty, I hope he means it ,he is representing great Britain in the Olympics. Be interesting to see what comes out in the future if an inquiry takes place. X
Condemned it because she got caught. That's all. You only have to look in the tack room of a horse owner to easily tell what they use. I imagine this lady has a lot of whips and sticks available, let alone all the damage she does from the reins. He knew, he chose to do nothing until a video came out.
Thank you for sharing your opinion about this woman. I’ve ridden since I was young and I never met a horse that acted wild unless the poor animal had no human contact, had been neglected, frightened or the spirit was beat out of them. Horses are sensitive animals and the nicer and respectful you are to them, the more eager to learn and work for you they will be. It’s a companionship that develops over time. I have heard so many times of people sending their horse to a trainer and when the horse came back it wasn’t the same animal that left or they had learned bad habits. One thing about people that compete they will do anything to win. I don’t compete, in my mind I have nothing I need to prove to myself never have. Unfortunately others like that in their life. I trail ride, go with them swimming, riding on full moon nights all just for fun. 0:05 I have to say though the people that support her even with this type of training…that horse will do anything to please the human, that’s even when it’s afraid, it’s like a kid that isn’t treated well but they still try to please because feeling bad, is better than no attention at all. Plus people need to understand that if a show or race horse doesn’t make money, metals or ribbons that horse is sold so they can get a performance horse and win. Horses are shipped to auction or slaughter more often than sold, they don’t have time for that. When I watch the Olympics I enjoy the cross country and jumping. Equine horse treatment should be a serious offence. There is no excuse to abuse an animal for any reason. They have a soul and have feelings like we do.
Oh my.....here comes my soapbox again. Lol. For all intensive purposes my stance is always to say..... remember, they can feel a fly land on their back. You need to understand that before you put your hands on a horse. So anytime I see anyone being that aggressive.....I come out with, remember, they can feel a fly land on their back. I don't need to say any more......let that sink in and then say it when you feel like things are going to far. Nothing will change if no one speaks up. Stay loud my friends! Hi Graeme! I'll get down off my soapbox 😂
Sure, but it's also what they are forced to experience in their mind. Imagine being whipped by somebody that just literally owns you. You can't get out of it, you can't fight it, you can't kick or bite or you know you'll get it worse (because this lady has definitely given worse to this horse). The mental and emotional trauma of knowing you are NEVER safe is the absolute worst. It's truly torture.
Your horses look so chill and calm, definitely picking up on the energy of their human ☺Also really nice to hear opinions on this from the more down to earth professional horsie people who don't compete competitively 🐎🤎
I knew someone who had a dressage trained warmblood (Andulasian/ Percheron). the young mare won in a couple of competitions but was sold and now is simply retired. I had never heard of her or the trainer using whips! she did carry a crop but it wasn’t used..
Thanks for this video. I always appreciate you and your input. You said everything I firmly believe. What she did was intentional and shows every sign of being habitual. It's simply incompressible how some people treat look at their horses and simple objects. My horse have a partnership, she's not a tool to use in whatever way to get the results I want regardless of what happens to her. Just disgusting.
What angered me too about the Charlotte Dujardin video was 1 the woman laughing and 2 why did they wait 4 🤬 years to release this video footage, it makes me wonder how many more horses did she do this to in the meantime?, tfs and your horses are beautiful too x Julie 🇬🇧
Do you think this lady is going to stop because she got caught? She's been doing it for decades and she won't stop now. The bonus of this video coming out just before the olympics is that it will get a lot of eyeballs. It was released at the most effective time for horses in general. Although I personally believe it was a personal vendetta against that lady as it totally ruined her chances at the olympics.... Releasing the video would have gone to a very apathetic media and an apathetic audience as nobody cares about some lady beating her horse when there is nothing on the line. Most are already doing it anyways.
@@StableHorseTraining totally agree with you, how many more equestrians abuse their horses, l saw the Mark Todd video, I’m sure he received a knighthood some years ago, should have been stripped of that title, and the German rider and trainer were in the modern pentathlon, l was very happy to hear that the equestrian part is being removed from the next Olympic Games, I love and have owned horses never used a whip, spurs and bits, and can only imagine how many professional riders abuse these beautiful animals, I wish they could talk, these professionals to me an apology is not enough, they should be prosecuted, unfortunately it’s easier said than done 😔 💖🇬🇧
Thank you, excatly how I & my wife believe with our horses. Our horses psychological well being is of the utmost importance. Any sign of agression around our horses you are out.
Don't forget, horses are flight animals. When they are in pain and suffering, they don't show it openly, because this behavior would attract the attention of predators. And that is the last thing horses want in this state. It is deeply anchored in their genome. This makes communication even more difficult.
I agree it’s every where. 4:55 There is more horse abuse going on daily. It’s called big lick Tennessee walker competition and horses taken to the auction. See videos on horse plus.
Whatever happened to that "lady" (I use this term loosely) who dragged the horse up in your neck of the woods by the way? I lost track and now forget her name and yes, abuse of any kind should be met with a ZERO TOLERANCE policy!! Thanks for all you do to show proper care and concern for your stable mates...
Personally, I take the stand that if you have to abuse or hit a horse (or any animal for that matter), it is because you are a poor horseman and an even poorer human being. How can anyone take the intellectual superiority stance when this is the only way you can figure out how to work or live with any animal! This Canadian is not proud of these Olympic so-called athletes, I hang my head in shame .
Horses are so much like cats they feel that you like them they smell you knowing you are good well intended towards them. I am sad for all the sufferings these sensitive animals so intelligent endured for passé royal entertainments like fox hunting, cabriole, dressages and what not. OIC should cancel all these frivolous cruel passé passetemps and concentrate on altius fortius "betterrius" ones. I laughed so much seeing these 2 horses showing you how much they love you because to you are good to them 24/7.
