That's the problem with most of the mindless drivel being made today. Nothing beats a great script and quality actors who bring the classics to life. Never will special effects compensate for the lack of quality writing and emotive stories.

Without a doubt - I love him in this period drama. The costumes - even the hats. His voice, his body, his beautiful eyes, and perfect hair. His wife in real life is very, very lucky. But I love the relationship in this series between "Sydney and Charlotte"...perfection! (Also his real wife is playing Eliza! The arch nemesis to our Charlotte! LOL)

I know I am late commenting here. But after watching Season 1 many times, this pair hasn't been replicated or replaced in my thoughts... I think one of the beautiful scenes for me is with the 3 children, being called Admiral Heywood and the thought of Regatta. I would have loved to see that in a movie. I know it's not going to happen, but I know quite a few fans created a HAE story for them posted on Archiveforum and Wattpad.

Same here. I would consider myself a pretty ardent Austen fan but I had no idea about this book. I knew she had some short stories from her early days but thought Lady Susan was her last book. These fan videos kept popping up on my RU-vid feed these past 2 days and had to watch it. Thanks to dailymotion.com I spent last night and this morning watching all 8 episodes. It's so good when you find someone that can appreciate the material and find the 2 leads that have the right sort of chemistry to make the story come alive - they are perfect in their roles. I think Jane Austen would be proud. Now there just needs to be another season to give us a more Jane Austen end otherwise she would be rolling in her grave.

I think he already knows, especially at the ball and in the boat, the whole of episode 7 was him sussing out her opinion, but he's letting Charlotte process what he's said first and he'll be waiting on her coming to him in final episode 😍

I think its purpose is that Charlotte and Sidney cannot be happy at the detriment of the situation that Tom has placed the family in. If there is any character to be angry at its Tom. Almost a parralel to Becoming Jane in which Jane says to Tom "Yes, but if our love destroys your family, then it will destroy itself, in a long, slow degradation of guilt and regret and blame."

Sidney was trying to tease her love of reading as an inside joke and guffed it up, with Eliza pouncing on it. I think the point of the scene was to show Eliza’s true colours and since Charlotte would never meet insults with counter-insults, shows to Sidney her much kinder and overall superior personality to Eliza’s. Someone on Tumblr pointed out that this particular scene makes Sidney see that he could never be happy with someone like Eliza - she brings out the worst in him (e.g. him becoming indecisive and not standing up for Charlotte in front of all those people).

I think that he pointed out her love for reading as a sign to her that he understands and knows her like no one else does.That he SEES her. Eliza twisted his words to lash out to Charlotte because she is unsure of Sidney emotions. The way Sidney looks at Charlotte while introducing Eliza toTom and Mary at their house in Sanditon makes me think that he is testing Charlottes reaction to find out how she feels about him. I believe he was trying to make her jealous by bringing Eliza to Sanditon. He was so hurt in the past that he feels he needs to be absolutely sure about Charlottes feelings for him, to dare to confess his love to her.

@@CoolCatKerr I am so pleased that you said this! i've read several comments saying that they weren't impressed with Sidney's behaviour this episode and not only do i completely disagree but honestly I personally feel the encounter between Charlotte, Sidney, Eliza and Susan has been completely misinterpreted. In the episode prior at the ball Sidney confesses to Charlotte that he doesn't feel like he belongs in the company of those particular people and Charlotte puzzled by this responds, "But this is your natural habitat is it not?" to which Sidney answers "perhaps I don't belong anywhere, like you said 'i am an outlier'". So Sidney feels as much as Charlotte that he doesn't fit in or have anything in common with anyone there. It is something they share in common and know about one another. Also he deliberately and thoughtfully mentions Heraclitus because it is something secret they shared and he knows she loves books and like him would probably feel more at ease reading her books than in this particular company. It was not meant as an insult or to be malicious at all, it was actually his way of showing that he understands her and he remembers what she says...but the vile Eliza twisted his words and made it out to be an insult because she doesn't know the true thoughtful meaning behind his words. But he realised too late that he'd put his foot in it and did not know what to say to fix it because in that company he does not know how to act he's as much out of place as Charlotte. BUT he goes after CHARLOTTE and he apologised sincerely. Throughout the episode he keeps finding his way back to CHARLOTTE. It shows a good contrast that with Eliza he feels completely out of place and not himself whereas with Charlotte he is completely at ease and she brings out the best in him. I love Sidney and Charlotte!!!!! I cannot wait for the last episode where hopefully they both confess their love for one another!!!

I also don't think he ment it as taunt. He looks at her endearingly when he says it, Eliza just took advantage to twist it into a mocking comment. Plus he says it in his "soft" voice, not his "I have a thorn in my paw" voice.

i agree that the conversation between brothers was so important. they dont want Sidney being used again.

@@debraday9072 Just a hypochondriac, and at least where his brother is concerned, he will state his opinion with regard to issues of Eliza's track record.

@@dawnchristensen7492 they showed a better version of Arthur in this episode which was nice. I really liked how kind he was to Miss Lamb. I haven't seen the actor in anything since My Mad Fat Diary (very good show) so I didn't recognize him at first. Sidney may have sent Eliza away but for some reason I don't think we've seen the last of her. She knew straight away Sidney was in love with Charlotte so she put her claim in and made sure Charlotte knew her place. I don't think she's a woman that gives up without a fight to get what she wants. It was nice to see Sophie Winkleman playing somebody nice (I only know her from the tv series The Place) and also the fact she's Claudia Winkleman's half sister, if you live in the UK you'll know her. Sophie played Lady Susan by the way.

Yes, and even before Arthur said those words he knew well he is in love with Charlotte, he just was under a spell of illusion of the past for some time.
