Charmaine Wilkerson, an award-winning short fiction writer, talks to Carol Fitzgerald about her debut novel, BLACK CAKE, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection and a Today Show Read With Jenna book.
After their mother's death, Byron and Benny are left a voice recording from their mother and a black cake that is not to be eaten until they finish listening. The children are taken on a journey into their mysterious family history.
Charmaine talks to Carol about how she approached the novel with small snippets of ideas, which came together to weave a larger story. They discuss her characters - how she discovered them and where she took them. And yes, they talk about the preparation of a black cake.

Absolutely loved this book. Listening to this interview has given me ideas for our book club discussion besides the book discussion questions online. I'm hosting and don't have time to soak fruits to make my own black cake ... luckily I can buy a black cake online. I read and listened to the book and just loved the voices and accents on the audio. Fantastic job! Thank you for such a wonderful experience - I'm now spoiled for my next book.

I never leave comments. Just have to make an exception for this beautifully woven tapestry detailing the plethora of forces that emblazoned themselves on the evolution of our personal histories. I am an island girl of Asian, African, East Indian, European, descent who was transported back home through place, food and cultural dynamics. Enjoyed it thoroughly and completely! Thank you for sharing your talent and showing that there is more in common as a human family than the differences that potentially divide. Love overcomes fear, faith in forgiveness, loyalty is priceless. Soaking my fruits...digging out grandma's handwritten recipe. Loved it!

I thought this was one of the best novels I have ever read but by the time I got all most to the end I was pulling my hair to see exactly how it would end. You have to concentrate on the story because not only do they go back and forth in the present and past they are from all different parts of the globe, they also take on fictional names. Read it. you'll love it . Looking forward to her next novel.

I appreciate this interview, much like the author I write in short stories woven into a cohesive narrative. ❤

The characters are excessive, lost tract who is who.

Well, we all have books we enjoy as well as those which we don't. I can see how if one feels overwhelmed by the number of characters, it may be worth it to set it aside. However, I think the primary issue probably isn't that. This is a complex, well-thought-out, impactful novel. While all art can and should be critiqued, it's difficult to take you at your word when you make such judgements in a sentence where you use "tract" instead of "track".

Reading this right now, and it is one of the best novels I have read in a long time! There is so much of everything woven into this story and so well written. You have an amazing talent. This book brings so much awareness on many levels - not only how our personal past history affects us and those we love in ways we can't imagine, but also history in general and all the prejudices that exist. I love how you wove the history of food into the storyline too. As someone who was born and raised in London, England, the Black Cake recipe is similar to my mum's Christmas cake recipe, as she too would soak the fruits and other ingredients (albeit in brandy not rum), for months before making the cake with marzipan and white icing. It brought a little bit of home and special memories back to me. Exceptional writing and so very clever!
