William Christie is the absolute master of the French Baroque. An American in Paris, who became one the greatest frenchmen by merit. May Les Arts Florissants live forever!
This piece represents the French baroque perfectly. The grandeur, beauty, and life perfectly epitomize the good of the French monarchy, especially under Louis XIV, so well, as well as the French brilliance of the 17th century.
This is without doubt the most vibrant and joyful Charpentier Te Deum I've heard and seen! I can only imagine what a joy it would have been either in the choir or orchestra on that particular occasion. I will watch and listen to this as often as I open my computer! Thank you to all who made it so special.
I sang this te deum when i was a part of a choir. I sang for eight years for the Maîtrise de Caen, a French choir for children from 6 to 14 yo. That was one of the greatest days of my life. Today i listen with nostalgia to this master piece (i apologies for my Bad english, i'm French
@@GM-tq6kj : of course, in the late Baroque era nothing could be superior to J.S. Bach's "Die Kunst der Fuge". But that was one century later. Honestly, no Bach Kantata contains as much supreme quality music as this Te Deum.
This is electrifying! I've always loved this piece but the use of original forms of instrumentation and the enthusiasm of the orchestra is stunning. Absolutely made my day.
How exhilarating it is to see musicians so energetically express their commitment to such a masterpiece. Enjoyment is on nearly every face. Thank you for your unbridled enthusiasm and brilliant execution.
Everything is perfect. The Chapelle royale, the orchestra, the conductor, the chorus and soloists and, yes, the pronunciation of Latin as it used to be in France until the 20th century! Té déom lodamüs!
Oh that's interesting about the pronunciation of Latin, I only recently appreciated that what I think of Latin is really Ecclesiastical Latin and that it differs significantly from Classical Latin. I wonder if the French pronunciation was also what we inherited in England from the Normans? Quite possibly I guess, given that English coronations where spoken in French for 300 years after 1066!
@@lauriethompson740 This is a french version of ecclesiastical Latin. The standard version is the Italian pronunciation, but many nations made some adaptations based on their language's phonetics. I don't know much about the spread to the English language, but the Ecclesiastical Latin currently used in anglophone countries follows modern English accents.
As an "spanish" speaker, I found extremely strange that pronunciation. Seems to be so, that "italian" and castilian have very near phonology ... Anyway, I've never heard before, about that "french prounciation" for classical latin. Kind regards from Montevideo. 🇺🇾
I must add that French pronunciation did not take stress into account (actually, Latin words used to be stressed the same way as French does: on the last syllable). Italian ecclesiastical pronunciation, on the other hand, stresses the words as Italian does, which is close to the original Latin (but ignores the original length of the vowels). This has consequences on the way the Latin words fit to the music. It would be interesting to listen to Romantic French music, from a time the French pronunciation was still used (e.g. Berlioz's Requiem). It could be quite surprising! By the way, "té déom" is how the title of such a piece is pronunced, regardless of the pronunciation that is used by the singers.

Meravellosa.
At his death, Charpentier's complete works must have numbered about 800 opus numbers, but today only 28 autograph volumes remain, or more than 500 pieces that he himself took care to classify. This collection, called Mélanges, is one of the most comprehensive sets of musical autograph manuscripts of all time.
Te Deum laudamus the official Hymn of Thanksgiving of the Roman Catholic Church, attributed to St. Ambrose of Milan and St. Augustine of Hippo who was converted by the former to God for graces obtained from Him.
Played the prelude on an Eb trumpet back in 1997 for a wedding. This is the first time I've heard the whole BEAUTIFUL piece. Dummy me. I should have know it was a prelude to SOMETHING. Now I know. Enjoyed it very much. I'll put a link in my collection.
Two years years later I cannot feel anything other than fury and bitterness- I have lost both my mother and husband to lockdown and safetyism. And I cannot find the words for my anger.
JUSTE MAGNIFIQUE !
@@MrBohuslav It' s the Royal Chapel at Versailles Castle , nothing more nothing less.... be sure they will play THIS for the reopening of Notre Dame. it's the best piece of frenche sacred music !
Aside from their unencumbered and naturally-endowed artistry, these wonderful and dear musicians show genuine happiness and joy in performance - it shows in their faces and in the depths of their eyes, the spiritual energy they emote which by nature is obviously inherent. They come to the stage already enjoined by expressive energy. They command Marc Antione's score in a manner which would make him happy. As I write this inconsequential personal note, I do not see their faces, yet I see the light emerging from the place of their performance. The test of any art - what light does it render, and from where? Plainly seen in the soul of every performer on this stage. Thank you.
What you wrote is exactly what I felt when listening to this magnificent interpretation. This could not have been better described. I agree 100% with you. Many greetings and thank you very much for writing that in a much better way than I did; that helped me put my feelings in order.
Brilliantly performed, but special compliments to whoever did the recording. The sound quality through a decent sound system is super, even via RU-vid.
Te Deum means" [Un]To God" in latin. I can only imagine the sound of combined praise in heaven by millions of the saved ones, joined by an inumerable host of angels, applauding the love, mercy and unbridled grace of our God, The Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit of Truth!! HALLELUIA!!
E-x-t-r-a-o-r-d-i-n-a-r-i-o ..........Bravo ..... ¡BRAVÍSIMO!

@@JEV2025 Ola! We french invented Marx before it was even born. We have Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the encyclopedists and Robespierre. We have collectivism before all other, terror and mass murdering of our own people before all other (read 'the infernal columns') and a philosophy of collectivism before all the other. @@JEV2025 Thank you for using the correct word: murder. I had a coworker who was always throwing up the "executions" of Louis and Marie when ever we had other teachers in for teacher secessions - I could count on it as much as two followed one. At one of these "secessions" she finally asked as to why I took offense to it. I had a great deal of satisfaction in holding out my arms and pointing to my veins and telling her: I have the blood of the Capets and the Von Babenburgs into whose family the Von Habsburgs married; these people of whose murder is a source of sport for you, are my distant blood kin.
For the most part, you have Vatican 2 to thank for that. This genre of music is more ceremonial than ecclesiastical, but was often used in when "ceremonies of the state" were held in church such as Thanksgiving Services, royal weddings and such.

What a marvelous video! I love the happiness on the faces of the musicians, both instrumentalists and singers, the unrestrained encouragement of the conductor, and the wonderful music. Praise the Lord, indeed!
This majestic and solemn performance they play with exquisite skill and splendid technique is beyond description , immeasurable , unfathomable and full of admiration and emotion , and comfortable to the ear and the mind
Yikes, that was a big emotion for a performance… unfathomable?! It was quite fathomable, because it was fathomed. Immeasurable?! Literally, the time signature of the music is called the ‘measure’. ‘Beyond description’?! You literally described the performance as all those other things. Chill out bro.

What a marvelous, quick, lively little mass. When one hears the word “mass” you would think of dark mystical sacred works in the style of Giovanni but this defines the tradition with one of my favorite baroque sacred works, truly a masterpiece.
