HIT Pendelum Impact Testers for tests on plastics specimen from 5 J to 50 J.
Impact testing is used to determine material behavior at higher deformation speeds. Classical pendulum impact testers determine the impact energy absorbed by a standardized specimen up to break by measuring the height of rise of the pendulum hammer after impact.
Several test methods are commonly employed:
♦ Charpy (ISO 179-1, ASTM D 6110)
♦ Izod (ISO 180, ASTM D 256, ASTM D 4508) plus 'unnotched cantilever beam impact' (ASTM D 4812)
♦ Impact tensile tests (ISO 8256 und ASTM D 1822)
♦ Dynstat impact bending test (DIN 53435)

Hello, I have a question. How do you prepare the plastic specimen out of plastic pellets? Do we need a specific machine or we just melt it and put it in a mold with the dimensions required?

The molding parameters and the type of mold being used can have a significant effect on the test results you obtain. If you aim to produce results you can compare with other laboratories or with data sheets from the material producers, you should strictly respect ISO 294-1 if you use injection molding, or ISO 293 if you apply compression molding. For injection molding of thermoplastics you will need an injection molding machine and a mold with symmetric cavities of same volume. For thermosets you may produce platens and then machine the specimen from the platen, for example by a milling machine.
