That's incredible. This film has been important to me since 1969 when I first saw it in school- and I was very excited when I found it posted on RU-vid.

The camera work is strikingly beautiful. I literally just wrote down the names to do a Google search. Your dad was the cameraman, or producer?

The best film about Chartres of several I have seen. I had a teacher in 5th grade who showed us this film. He was obsessed with it, and as a class we watched it every Friday, as a way of ending the week. Somehow this became embedded in my psyche and years later I had the chance to visit the cathedral in person, as an homage to this eccentric teacher who got us thinking about the universe and man's place in it. Glad to find it on RU-vid!

I saw this, I believe, in 9th grade - 1969 or thereabouts. This film blew me away - the combination, as indicated in the film, of faith, intellect and engineering - beautifully presented with exquisite music. After that, it was my goal to "pilgrimage" to the Cathedral at some point - which I got to accomplish in 1983. That visit was everything I had hoped. Having a first rate guide didn't hurt, but I also got to explore on my own. I don't think any other documentary on Chartres has the power to move as this one does. This one "gets it" and effectively presents what it gets. God bless the Encyclopedia Britannica films of my youth!!

This documentary holds up remarkably well, just awesome. They really nailed it. The comparison to rockets was particularly interesting. I got to visit Chartres in early '22. My visit was also everything I hoped it would be.

I liked the comparison with The launching structures of the rockets as well - considering this was made just a year after John Glenn's orbital space flight, which is actually one of my earliest memories (I was 6).

Потрясающе! Фильм создан в год моего рождения... а сейчас я второй год живу в Шартре и каждый день любуюсь уютными старыми улицами и восхищаюсь красотой и величием Собора! 🙏🌷🔆

There is a magnificent scene about Chartres in one of Orson Welles’s later films, F for Fake, that is narrated by him. The sequence is truly magical for anyone who is interested.

Totally agree - a profound segment. What is it about this place? There are other incredible cathedrals but there's just something about Chartres...

France in its purest form! It's hard enough to get along with most people...but no UN flag...just the French. EXACTLY like the times in my parents past❤❤❤❤

The medieval builder cannot depend on faith to keep the walls from collapsing: How modern this sentence sounds, and it contrasts 1500 years of Catholic dominance based on ignorance and superstition. Gothic architecture was indeed the first step to free the human spirit from the horrors started in the IV century and still keep humankind enslaved to dubious dogmas and wars in the name of God. Never underestimate the negative influence that Christendom had on all the other religions, especially Islam, and we still must suffer the consequences, because Humankind apparently never learns..
