I'm a 78 year old cockney lady living in co.durham. about 7 years ago me and my husband took our grandson to Lindisfarne for the day . There was a bloke on the street there playing and singing There ain't no pleasing you while playing guitar with a huge crowd around him. It's one of my favourite songs but never ever expected to hear it being sung on lindisfarne. I started to sing along with him and he called me over to join him so he was singing it with a Geordie accent and me with a broad cockney accent. It went down real good and I can honestly say it was one of the vest and unique days of my life. So sad Chas is no longer with us with his great voice. God bless you me old mate xx
HA ! Nice one. To paraphrase Pete Townsend - for this song ALONE Chas'n'Dave (& the drummer) deserved to be carried round in Sedan Chairs for the rest of their lives. Sad that Chas is no longer with us, but fond memories of a London that no longer exists. Cheers from an 'up Norff B***ard'.
I was in a pub near Charing Cross last night, The Marquis. Loads of vinyl and a turntable behind the bar and the barman puts this on. Twenty or so blokes, most of us wearing Fred Perry’s just burst into song. Quite a sight. Brilliant song.
@@darrendodd3646I was in London last week for a lads weekend, one of my mates had 1 too many and was singing this at the top of his lung's, one of his favourite songs even though he's a scouser 👍
I'm from Manchester in the North of England. When I put this song on the jukebox in our local boozer, everybody bursts into song. That only happens with great songs and this is a masterpiece.
You could imagine this song being performed in a smoke-filled pub somewhere in London, with patrons raising their glasses and joining in at the appropriate (or near enough to appropriate) times. Great song and yeah definitely very British!
@@paulinegerrard8545 How did I miss you Pauline , one of us must have been in the toilet at the time , as you said , great times with great people ,shame they're gone now
It's criminal how this has been overlooked. It's one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Imagine the knees up in heaven now Chas is at the Joanna. R I P
My parents and I fell in love with this song when we saw the video on CMT. Now that they're gone, I can picture my two favorite people in the audience as Chas performs. Someday I'll be along, Ma and Da, and we all can dance.
This music will always live on. I absolutely love them and every song.and your so right this including the 70s was the best era and there will never be another talent like Chaz n Dave. ❤
I play it on the jukebox in my local and their cockney rhyme takes me to an old east end boozer full of drunk geezers, and I live in port Glasgow, top drawer stuff.
I was stood at a bus stop in Weymouth about 25 years ago when Chas and Dave pulled up in a car asking where they could find a curry house. I lied and said it was the way I was going and I'd show them if I could have a lift. They knew I was pulling their legs and laughed, gave some kind words and went to get a curry after I told them the right way. Absolute gentlemen, I hope they enjoyed that curry.
Chas and Dave did some gimmicky songs. They had a laugh. Some folks didn't take them seriously, including themselves. But, my God, this song is a masterpiece.
Totally agree. Weird really. Chas Hodges was a backing musician to Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and Gene Vincent. You'd be hard pressed to get much more rock and roll than that
So glad I saw them before Chas died. They were supporting status Quo at the O2. On for an hour and played all their biggest hits. It was a great night , Then the following night we enjoyed Madness . What a weekend 😊
Three years ago, New Year’s Eve, Chas and Dave sang this on Jools Holland’s show. This song, with it’s swing in the melody, suited Chas’s husky voice very well. Bill, my husband, and I watched the show at home and felt uplifted by the song. Chas, as well as Bill and I, would have no idea that the singing duo would be separated by Chas’s death, nor me by my husband’s, and in the same year and almost to the day! Be at peace both of you and Chas- keep on with the music! It would be a great shame not to.
Eloquently put.. me old China! you took the words right out of my mouth. Great song from great musicians. Chas Hodges may no longer be with us but he'll live on long into the future...
@@toyotav8383 I am a northerners from Bradford actually & got it from my mother, who apparently didn't go to finishing school lol but she did live in the Elephant & castle for a time so maybe she picked it up from there
No lie, Chas lived near me in Herts and used to see him in Sainsburys all the time. The urge to ask him if he was there for rabbit was strong, but I never said it. Wish I had. RIP Chas, legend.
I never knew that he'd moved out to Herts, I'm from East Ham but moved to North Herts about 12 years ago. Seems like a few of us London oiks made it out here then.
That reminds me ... When I was a kid, I had a butcher's round on Saturday mornings, where I'd deliver meat for the local butcher. One of the customers was Jack Warner of Dixon of Dock Green fame. One morning I delivered his Sunday roast and when he answered the door I took my chance: bent both my knees and said "Morning all". He humoured me by laughing and gave me a little memory to cherish for a lifetime. You should have done it! :-)
It doesn't get any better than this, reminds me of such good times. Back when we had communities and people knew and talked to each other, my own people.
Probably the most serious song they ever did - i was only 12 years old when it came out but having lived through a failed marriage i can truly identify with it now.
I once gigged with these guys in Glenmavis, near Airdrie, not only were they total Gentlemen, they were a fantastic act, the entire audience left the room floating on euphoria ...these guys are REAL stars !!
I'm truly fucking gutted. I know we all have to go at some point, but I always wish they'd wait until after I'd gone. A massive part of my childhood just died along with Chas. rest in peace Chas & thanks for the brilliant & charismatic entertainment & music
Brilliant post. The older I become (58 now) and the more the ledgends of my past die away the more I resent the no-marks who masquerade as 'stars' today. I can see now that as you become really old you probably lose the will to live on...
Back in the early eighties. When my dad was playing darts in the pub and I had to sit there in the corner with my coke and packet of crisps and this playing in the background.loved it.
Not being British, I love these guys. I feel so privileged to have seen them live twice (in Brighton) Chas & Dave are one of the reasons I love this country!
My Dad was their compare, he toured with them for years. His name was Freddie Stuart. He did stand up comedy as a spiv, cockney barrow boy like a Max Miller character. So if you saw them live, you would have seen me ol man.
@@tonyburt1015 I met your old man too. I'd sometimes go with Dad to C&D gigs. They were great blokes, all three of them, very down to earth. Dad loved working with them, was a real 'family' sort of feel. My memory of your Dad is that Micky was a quite bloke but with a good sense of humour. They were working somewhere, Margate, or somewhere, and Charlie loved his fishing. They went out on a boat. Dad spent the whole trip throwing up over the side and the boys were laughing. Best day's fishing Charlie had because Dad was chumming the water. I've got a great photo of the three of them on the boat, Charlie, Dave, and Micky (wearing his trademark hat), with Dad hanging over the side.
Very sad to see Chas has passed away at the age of only 74 years . Thoughts of family and friends and Dave also Aint No Pleasing you is a classic loved it still do RIP Chas.
I always liked Chas & Dave from their Courage best ads, rabbit, sideboard song etc; But this put them in a different class and proved how talented they both were. I loved this song when it was released and I still love it! Dave.
@@juliehowlett4100 it's the song for meat head blokes who've took their eye off the ball, and misguidedly think the situation they find themselves in is someone else fault. Or, they've just picked a wrong un and the joint bank account reads "you have insufficient funds for this withdrawal" 👽
Agreed, this should be on every karaoke machine period,i remember going to school on a cold morning after hearing this so on the radio, dressed in my Adidas all blacks and Fahra trousers, classic track..
Love your comment fyrret09, never thought of that before but you're right. I work with voluntary radio station and am gonna make sure this is played back to back with I Will Survive next week.x RIP Chas.
A belter of a song! Love it. One of my faves. And not just an anthem for fellas telling their spouses to do one but a song for anyone tired of being used. Could be work, mates, family or whatever. RIP Chas and thank you Dave. A LOT of love for these two x
this world is poorer today for the loss of a hugely under rated talent such as the one we have lost, this guy was no comedy act,he was trully unique, may god rest him and when i die i ge to say i lived when chas and dave were touring,.i lived as they did, many peoplke recognise talent in latter years,ah tell you,you misseed the boat, this guy was truly unique,am tellin u
I bought the 45 rpm record when it first came out in the eighties. Still have it. The B side was Give it some stick Mick. What a record. Still love them as much as I did then. Fantastic
I smile and almost have a tear in my eye when I see this. The composition, production, vocals and timing are world class. People who know, will know that c & d are true greats. Ask Albert Lee, ask Eric, ask Jimmy page.
Yes. I can't persuade my husband as he can't get past the cockney boy image but these guys were class. Anyone Albert Lee rates, I rate. I think we lost Chas recently. Sad loss
