This was from a hack about a year ago when I first got Rosie! She was only 3 and in her new bitless bridle, but we were chased by a puppy and of course it meant no harm but she couldn’t understand if she needed to run or not! Ever since she hasn’t quite been the same with dogs as she was so young at the time :/

Yeah, it should be a reflex as a dog owner. You see something, you don't know exactly how your dog will react, you put them on a leash. Then when you're sure it's over you can let them go.

Fr, dont let your dogs off without correct recall training. Simple as, they can get into all source of trouble for the dog and their owner. What if a puppy meets an aggressive dog, or animal? If they see a bird near a cliff? Chase a rabbit into a thorny bush? Get lost in a field? Run into a road? Screaming the dogs name over and over wont help, unless it's trained... Really sad to see people don't use correctional commands for their dogs like Focus or Wait. Glad rosie handled it so well!
@leslie2149
@leslie2149 2 года назад
I was thinking the same thing. Puppy needs more training before you let it off leash. I also just "love" people who's dog is running loose who go, "Don't worry, he's friendly!" as he's running up to me, barking and not looking all that friendly!
@kila8046
@kila8046 2 года назад
@@leslie2149 I "love" those people as well. Is ist so hard to just show some common sense? My late dog had a troublesome past and got very agitated and aggressive with other dogs she didn't know. So I put her on a leash whenever somebody new would show up with a dog in company. "Don't worry, he's friendly" - "Well mine is NOT!" The faces and the reaction were almost comical...

I used to work in a kennels and it's honestly crazy how little some owners will do when it comes to training their dogs. They seem to think dogs would naturally just KNOW what to do and often think their dog is naughty or mischievous, because it doesn't listen to them. It's very frustrating.
@lexjohnson0803

what I don’t get is why people in England haven’t figured that out yet. I have never been there but from videos I’ve seen (non equestrian ones too) it’s not uncommon at all to come across someone hacking. In the states you never see people trail riding along roads. It just puzzles me how many videos I see of UK riders getting terrorized by dogs, you would think more people would know if it’s so common to come across riders.

I had a similar scenario a few weeks back. I was on my pony and her owner was hand walking another smaller pony through the woods. This collie-cross ran up and began barking and snarling (ponies took it like champs though). I shouted for the owner to come get their dog because we had horses and it took the owner of the dog a good 5 minutes to come get it. Two more dogs, also off-lead and of the same breed, came out of the bushes and also began barking and snarling. When the owner did finally show up, she only managed to get two to stop and the first one that showed up tried to follow us - she had very little control over it. If your dog doesn’t have good recall, it shouldn’t be off the lead.

what u are saying isn't wrong but people go to this kind of woods (far from city) hoping there's nobody so that they can let their dog go without a leash they CAN'T know there Is gonna be a horse, when I go to the National Park I don't expect to see a horse so I let my dog go and many time for many minute I don't even know where he is (we know he is not far he is scared to be abandoned). what I want to say is don't be angry at the owner or the dog because they want the dog to have a little of fun cause they can't see the future and can't know if there is gonna be a horse there is a possibility that the dog is barking at the horse because they think the horse is a menace to their owner this include the dog that are trained ONLY after all of this im not English so im sorry for my poor understanding of the language

Dog owners should keep their animals under control at all times is how I feel about. I had a blue Heeler that would go with me while riding my horse in the woods. If other horses were approached all I had to say to her was “stay with me” and she would not even look at the other horses and would be right next to my horse or behind. Other riders would sometimes chastise me for having a dog on the trail. I didn’t care because my dog was no problem. They were the problem. Their anxiety would cause their own horse to booger. A deer could jump out and she would stay right with me on cue. Rare dog. She died some years back and I don’t think I’ll ever have another one as good as she was.

A friend of mine is an equine vet in Northern California, who had to deal with the aftermath of a pitbull attack, that occurred on a county park trail, the horse suffered bites on its face, and head, and required a massive number of stitches, while it's rider was thrown, and severely injured, the dog was captured by its owner, who placed it into a black jeep, and fled the area, at last report neither the dog, it's owner, or the escape vehicle, had been found, the horse survived but was disfigured, and I believe that the rider also survived after a long recovery, the incident reminds us all to use the utmost caution when approaching free ranging dogs.

Enough to be ok with a slow trot following someone but no clue about leg cues or anything more than I could use the reins to steer. I fought with my barn sour horse the entire way down the trail to the beach and then a few minutes after we got to the beach some idiots off leash dog decided my horse looked like a really fun toy. My horse bolted full out. That was when I discovered I'm decent at keeping my seat during surprises, though the pommel of the western saddle I was in also did wonders.

Most people back horses at about 3 1/2 so they can get used to a saddle & the feel of a rider young and start getting used to the world by hacking. Then I turned Rosie away until she was 4 to let her mature and then started proper work!

The best solution to dogs running up on a horse is to turn the horse around and chase down the dog/ s. Worked for me every time. The dogs don't expect it. Green horses gain confidence and trust, and more seasoned horses come to relish the "game." I especially like to do it when owners are being tools about controlling their dogs. Once had some jerk actually encouraging his dog to go after the horses. He didn't find it so funny when we did that and sent his dog running, yelping like a whipped pup with its tail between its legs.

"She's only a puppy" that's not a freaking excuse! If your dog doesn't know recall, don't let him/her off lead. My dog had good reliable recall at 6 months old due to daily consistent recall training on the long lead in different places, different scenarios, yes also around horses. Until she did it perfect on the long lead than gradually build up until she can go off lead. But I always recall her when we pass someone else. Not just horses but other dogs, people... It's called manners. Can't believe these kind of dog owners. Not only could you have been injured but the horse or the dog could have been killed/inured too. Very irresponsible behavior on their part.

What good respectful car drivers you have there. dogs not trained on recall shd b on a leash, no exceptions.....no need to use steps etc to get onto a tall horse if u have no spring, just lower the stirrup until u get on; quick n simple.

She was backed at 3 1/2 like almost all horses in Ireland, so I got her and I did some hacking (like in this video) and then I think about 2 weeks after this she was turned away until she was 4, to start properly backing & schooling. Backing at 3 is absolutely fine as long as you only hack and do very light work!

Where I board we have to worry about deer and vultures flying out of corn/trees since we are on 406 acres. The most noise we get it from the gun range that is close by or the tractors at the barn. My Standardbred used to pull carts for the Amish after he finished racing but I am thinking about driving him myself soon.

I was nearly killed this way a year ago. Ended up with 3 fractured ribs and left lung contusion. Cracked my helmet and was knocked completely unconscious. The dog I ran into was more aggressive in the approach, but I held my breath during this video. So glad all ended well in this case!

Kudo's to both rider and dog owner. Rider accepted it was a puppy, and owner tried to divert the situation. This is how it should be handled.❤❤❤

Okay, so it seems most ppl in the comments are talking about the dog coming out, and stuff. ( Of course it's bad, I know) But oh. My. GOSH. Idk, but the sound of Rosie's trotting/cantering is absolutely so satisfying! You and Rosie handled it very well.

I’m sorry that that happened. I’ve owned dogs my whole life, and whenever we went on trails that could have bikes, or horses, I would always have my dogs on a leash, because you never know when you gotta call them back. I always worked on recall with my dogs, but there is always that one time where they won’t listen, so I always had them on a long leash so that they were able to run, but I could call them back, or keep them off of the trail, in case of a fast bike, or a horse. We did socialize the dogs with horses tho, since my friend had horses and we always hung out at her place. Your horses reacted really well. At least the puppy didn’t go and try to bite the hind legs, and decided to just bark at them.

i think you are completely right, our older dog has great recall and our puppy is it also learning very well. But even the dog have sometimes hard times listening, so thats why i leash them up whenever i see a horse or a other dog.

No it’s not alright! A dog that doesn’t have recall should not be allowed off leash! Can you imagine if this was a more easily frightened horse or a child on the horse and the rider got hurt? Tell those owners it’s not okay and to put their dog on the lead.

I understand I’m a few years late. My dog a English Bulldog,used to not come to recall first time.We’d let him off leash on a *empty* field.Once he’d learnt to come back after two calls at the max we’d walk him in forests areas.We leash the our dog whenever we see things that set him off e.g: Bikes,horses and roads.We try not to bother horse riders when they are on mount even when dismount.We live by cattle and every time we walk past my dog is not fazed.We hope we’ll train him enough so we can have him off leash by the end of this year.

Recall is taught on a leash and given increased distance until the dog can be trusted to come back in high excitability situations. Not much different from taking horses out. But it's amazing the number of people who think you let a dog off leash to teach recall.

As someone who has almost lost my two horses from dog bites in the legs it bothers me so much when I see dogs off the lead on a public track, trained or not. My horses still have lumps on their legs where they got bit that will stick with them for the rest of their life…

I personally let my dog off leash in forest when I know there is no too much people, my dog know the recall, but I know when she get too excited she don't focus on me properly, she still have a lot to learn. This is why I'm super vigilent while walks and always bring a long leash with me just in case.

What I usually do with these people is to constantly turn to face the dog so that they never get behind the horse, kinda scares the dogs off. My favourite response I ever saw from a fellow rider was this 80 year old woman aggressively yelling at this dog, poor thing was so confused it just stopped dead. Her connemara barely even reacted to her, absolutely amazing wee pony

All 3 of my dogs are trained in recall, and if I feel they will blow it off one day, I will use a longline (50-70ft leash). Plus my dogs grew up on a farm around chickens, horses, people, turtle ponds, trucks/tractors etc. so they don't give a damn about anything

It's crazy people just let them off lead I have a dog and she's a puppy she's 10 months old but I never let her off lead unless it's in a feild we've hired all the other time she stays on the long line and she has better recall than that dog she's not perfect at it so I she stays on the long line till she is
