On November 4, 2022, a large tornado ripped across Texas near the towns of Powderly and Paris, causing millions of dollars in damage. It was a massive, rain-wrapped EF-4, growing to nearly a mile wide at its peak with winds close to 170mph, making it one of the most powerful storms on Earth...and I was there to witness it. This video documents my very first storm chasing experience, and everything that lead up to me deploying my homemade Mark II probe in front of this mega-twister!
WARNING: under no circumstances should you ever attempt to replicate the actions depicted in this video. I had the assistance of several experienced storm chasers, who do this kind of thing every year. We also had a trained emergency responder with us at all times. Seriously...DON'T RISK IT.
...unless you're an idiot like me!

Storm chasing is another one of my specialities. I actually do weather updates for my group and other groups. I go over weather anomalies daily and am part of the storm spotters network.

Ever run into styropryro? Did I hear you say you were 2 stories underground (before the brilliant ad)

Nah, he's way further north. It'd be cool to meet him though, we don't seem to be all that different from what I can tell! And yes, I did say two stories underground: we were in a computer lab at the University of Oklahoma, but I couldn't say that on video, since OU hates being associated with student storm chasing for some reason, lol. Hence why most of the monitors were blurred!

Man, you should of deployed on my FIL's land. That nader took about 70% of his trees out. And his neighbor who was about 500 yards away had their entire cabin flipped upside down. Still can see the damage trail nearly a year later

Y'all making me nervous lol! Sounds like you have people who know what they're doing and what the risks involved are. Stay safe!

dont worry man if you keep chasing your dreams and tornadoes you will eventually get a perfect intercept and good data! keep up the work this is awesome and i might build this myself too even tho we dont have tornadoes in finland.

:O I'm surprised this video doesn't have more views! I've been going through your videos and this one has some of my favorite cinematography and editing you've done yet. Great stuff! I think you're going to blow up 😊

@@LabCoatz_Science Your ADVANTAGE is that you seem willing to tackle anything science related and interesting. Never turn down a video idea because of assumptions about your audience. Take a channel like Tech Ingredients. He is a unique guy, one that I would not "predict" to be a leading youtube science personality. That said he produces some BOMBER content. It's all in how you present it, and to a large extent how much you enjoy doing it. That love of the subject will inherently spill over into the content. Good luck man. I hope you find great success.

3:40 What you’re looking at is called a hodograph. What you’re looking at is a sample of the wind direction and speed with relation to the altitude. The CINH that you referred to is called Convective Inhibition which is a measure of the ability for convection to form and strengthen and the CAPE that you refer to is the Convectively Available Potential Energy which is a measure of the energy in the atmosphere at a given location. To have a strong likelihood of tornadoes forming, you would need a hodograph that shoes a veering of the wind with altitude (which this hodograph shows very well) a relatively low CINH, and a relatively high CAPE.

Literally this month we had a high enough chance where I live for me to get radaromega because I knew that it was gonna be a crazy day (looking at models and spc outlooks) and I'm happy I did because a tornado hit around 1.75 miles away from where I live (no injuries/deaths thankfully it also missed our city east by a little otherwise it could've been way worse). It was very surreal seeing the CC drop from that EF-2 and was the first tornado so far in my city that's on the Damage Assessment Toolkit. Stay safe!

Very cool, glad nobody got hurt! I remember when the El Reno and Moore tornadoes came through my area (and within a week of each other too!). I wasn't chasing back then, but I remember seeing the Moore tornado's massive wall cloud all the way from my home in Norman! And somehow, I still haven't seen an actual tornado yet...

@@LabCoatz_Science They updated and now it shows 16 injuries. I guess when I first viewed it they haven't fully updated it yet so my bad. Thankfully no deaths though! Should've checked to make sure it hasn't updated before commenting sorry lol

Best storms are in April May when Carribean tropical air meet cold continental Canadian air and the sun is stronger, the leaves and field crops are in full folliage giving massive transpiration.

I was hoping you were going to put all your equipment on a truck, then pin the accelerator down with a brick to let it drive itself right into the tornado. Then either outrun the tornado on foot or tie yourselves to a pipe while the tornado passes over you harmlessly. Actually, that would make a great movie.
