Kate Drummond @Gotta_Be_K_D
is living proof that it is never too late to follow your dreams. After 12 years as an elementary school teacher, Kate left the classroom and life, as she knew it, behind. She sold all her belongings and possessions, packed up her dog and moved to Toronto to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an actress. In this inspirational talk, Kate shares her journey and the many lessons she has learned as a result of taking her biggest leap of faith. Little did she know that making this change in her life would actually change her life.And There I Was: A Tale About Chasing Dreams & Beginning Again

I was just perusing through videos about following your dreams, and I ran across this one. It gave me chills!! I have been teaching for 12 years... I am 35... and I just made the decision, about three weeks ago, to quit my job and follow my dreams!! I want to be a truck driver. It is all I think about, and I've been to school for it already. I decided to stop feeling miserable, and do something about it. You are so right about that feeling in the pit of your stomach. Thank you for your encouraging words, and I wish you well on your journey!!

I'm 56 years old and only recently realised I love writing songs and would love to be a singer-songwriter. I have no idea why it took me this long to realise this. But I've started to put my songs with homemade videos on RU-vid on my own channel. I've no idea where this path will lead (if anywhere) but I am being absolutely truthful to myself, and it feels good. I feel a strong kindred spirit with all the people here commenting on this talk.

OMG, this completely resonates with me. I'm turning 34 this year and I decided last year to quit my job and to find a career on marketing or product development. 8 months now, what I found is that I get to know myself better and I wanted to be in the green Industry(specifically textile or plastic that's biodegradable or recycled) just unsure of what role should I play. Thanks for sharing your story Kate!

I appreciate what she says. I really do. I chased my dream and it didn't work out well at all. And truthfully I worked it all out as best as I could and I found my dream to in reality be a nightmare. So I had to go back to doing what I did before. And I can tell you the truth.... I REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate the job I was desperate to get away from before. I have an expected paycheck. I don't spend my life trying to make a living. I don't spend my life trying to live out a fantastical dream. My life is ordinary now. And I wouldn't have it differently. The years spent chasing my dream damaged me in ways I can barely put into words. If you are in doubt at all about chasing your dream... don't give up what you have to attempt to make it work. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Take baby steps. Get sound advice. Don't throw caution to the wind. Build slow. Don't be fantastical. Be practical. A dream won't pay a mortgage. It's really hard to be homeless with a dream.

@ShadowsMasquerade

I don't agree with this perspective. You don't even need a mortgage/house, you can live in cheap apartments with roommates. I think some people are just not willing to give up certain things, which to me means they're not "following their dream" but rather something that doesn't exist. Some sort of vision that they believe will make everything right. It's not how it works. Following your dream is not a "solution", but a way of being. The moment you decide on your dream is the moment you start LIVING it rather than following it. It's difficult and there is no end goal where you just go "I did it, that's it"... no, it's a lifelong commitment.
@quynhpham2924

It's a gamble. Not everyone needs the comfort of life. Not everyone will be successful chasing their dream. For every one person successful, there are untold numbers of failures. One of the reason she is the invited speaker...inspirational and unique message.

i studied to become a professional composer but without ever taken any singing lessons in my life i realized i want to become a singer last year. i'd never really even sung much of anything but i tried it and turns out i'm a natural singer but now i just need to figure out some technique as well. i'm 31 now and it terrifies me i'm already too late but i'm going ahead with it anyway...

keeelane please dont worry I am 36 and I've only started singing now. I trained my voice but because I didn't think I was pretty or thin enough I didn't sing. The song is in you.find people to sing and compose with.look at Nina Simone she never want to sing just compose and play piano she ended up being a genius in all three.keep going .every one is on a journey every one is struggling. We will all get there.

Good talk, Ms. Drummond. I took the path less traveled once. I gave me 7 enjoyable years of surviving nicely while doing my passion. When powerful market forces made it impossible to continue earn a living working for myself in the dream business, I took a j-o-b for security. Fortunately I can retire in 2 years with a bit of security and head back to the dream!

Don't take the know it path, reality changes moment by moment so it will not be the same for ever. When we have a plan, expectations etc. when things do not go the way we thought we experience trouble. It's ok to lose to an opponent, but we must not lose to fear.

You can fit a square into a circle. The circle just needs to be bigger. The system determined to huff and puff and blow your pilot light out doesn't want this because they are different shapes. One thing with the square is, when in a circle around it and held up , is the light shines through.

I probably could have been happy for the rest of my time but after 19 years of marriage we’re divorcing. I’m taking a break from packing my stuff this very minute. I’m moving 1800 miles from my big house in an affluent area to a flat in a not so great side of town, in a not so great city (one of the 10 most violent cities in America). This is forcing me to take a real hard look at myself and figure out what I want....what is my pilot light or even my North Star? I don’t know what’s next or how things will turn out but I know one thing: I will keep moving forward. A new beginning at 55 years old? This might be interesting! I just wonder how may of us (myself included) wonder through life conforming to other’s expectations convincing ourselves we are happy.

Ramon Betancourt try asking your self questions such as what i really enjoy doing , what does the world need that I want to be part of that team for them, what major issue that the world is facing that I would love to contribute to it is the intersection of your contributing your energy to it and loving it and the world benefit from your contribution. best luck to you in your Life Journey :)
