Just moved to florida 9 months ago. Thank you for putting things into perspective as to what to expect in a hurricane. I dont think ill ever lose my love for florida no matter how big the storm. If my apartment gets destroyed, ill let insurance take care of my colatteral, and find a different place to rent. I wouldnt mind changing scenery every so many years anyways. Its all part of life's adventure anyways. God bless
Brian Barton Hey Brian we were probably very close then! Yes, it packed quite a punch. Quality wise it’s one of my favorite chases. Florida hurricanes are always quality storms.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, the eyewall barely brushed the coast, and on its weaker side. While it had max sustained winds of 120mph with higher gusts, those remained overwater. We managed to experience gusts mostly in the 100mph range, peaking near 110mph in the strongest bursts.
Hi Jose! Very impressive footage. You did an excellent job documenting Matthew, and selecting the right intercept location. Look forward to viewing your Maria video documentation!
Just survived hurricane ian. Im here to tell everyone nothing is more davastating besides the hurricane than being stranded in a flood. I am so grateful for the men and women dedicated to rescuing floridas citizens. May God bless every one of them. The hurricane might be freightening to an extent but nothing is scarier than being isolated in a flood with no power or cell phone coverage. No one should ever experience the sense of powerlesness of being in a flood
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I agree that flooding is the worst aspect of any hurricane. Water just don't give you any breaks. Where did you experience hurricane Ian? I got to get in the eye in Punta Gorda.
david busch Hi David, yes I remember when it was still south of Cuba and we weren’t sure about a potential S Florida landfall. It could have been much worse there, too!
Fred Thompson Some of the wildest Florida hurricanes on record hit during the month of October. So we have to keep a close eye on any potential surprises.
Despite that we got the edge of the western eyewall onshore, the hurricane technically didn't make landfall until reaching North Carolina as a Cat-1. When this video was filmed Matthew had 120mph Cat-3. However, those winds remained over water. Winds in this video probably peaked at sustained Cat-1, gusting to ~100mph at peak.
