Late season whitetails can be tough, but also one of the most exciting hunts of the fall. Very few things measure up to seeing thick-necked bucks cruising the woods for a hot doe or two...

For some reason, I’ve found that there’s a different kind of magic to a day that starts with terribly cold and wet weather that opens up to a sunny day. The pain makes the resulting beauty somehow better. It also doesn’t hurt that everyone else who gave up because of the cold has left and having the spot to yourself makes everything amazing.

I think I got caught out in the same snow squall as you. The fawn in distress call comment at the end cracked me up. I was doing an estrous doe call at last light and called in a bear. He wasn't very big but having a hard time seeing him was a little sketchy. No more calling at last light for me. Awesome videos young man.

A guy I know owns a few thousand acres of land in WI here and he allows a pack of wolves to live there... He manages his entire property as if it were an outfitter for his family to hunt deer on..... He tells me stories of how he walks the trails at night & the wolves will run along side of him to investigate who's walking in their woods.... He said that after each pack member crosses his scent trail - they just turn off and go about their business !!!! That's crazy stuff but he's 70+ years old, raspy voiced, mountain man looking dude who loves his sanctuary..... .. It's a crazy feeling to hear them howling nearby.

A couple years ago I was heading to my hunting spot, walking on crunchy snow in the dark with a wolf pack howling below me (NE Washington). It was the first time I've been out hunting with wolves that close. I said to myself, "Your not in Kansas anymore, lol". On that day, I decided to head back to the truck around noon and I heard another wolf howling in broad daylight (noon). Pretty crazy, hopefully WDFW allows special permits for wolves in the near future.

Man,,, When our wolf population drops here in Wisconsin - the coyotes return in crazy numbers and eat everything !!! People's pets are killed and eaten, I find dead rabbits everywhere in my yard with their heads and guts eaten only,,, they get thru my chain link dog kennel to rip open the coop to get my chickens, they eat any barn cats that are around,, right now I actually have a dead deer stripped to the bone that's next to one of my semi trailers parked in the backyard - They're everywhere !!! Every night dozens of packs that have dozen in each pack howl around to each other every night....... And I've heard it's worse south and east of me. Crazy !!.. it's amazing how just a couple of wolves can keep the coyote population in check.

@@thistledewoutdoors3331 yes totally insane. I went to school in Wisconsin I miss my fish frys!! Yes out east here we have them bad it’s so bad every mountain top has its own packs, I just filmed me smoking a beautiful red one this year with muzzleloader while deer hunting in the Catskills will be out later this year, but if you wanna see some nice big coyotes I ran full traplines last few years. My families been hunting NY PA to Maine and Canada since the 40s and we never had coyotes they were introduced just like the ticks and Lyme disease, and that I remember myself when it started in this region now it’s a damn True pandemic. Great video as always! This was especially fun to watch because we were hunting in Northeast Washington at the same time as you! It was fun seeing you hike through the same rain, fog and snow that we were. We also got to see a lot of fresh wolf and cougar tracks, but also a ton of deer (and elk) sign. Predator-prey dynamics have been pretty well studied, and researchers have consistently found that weather and habitat drive deer populations, not predation or human hunting. I was watching this while eating spaghetti from the young buck my brother shot on the opening day of late season.

Next time take a old rag soak it in doe in heat sent, and pin it to your pant leg. I've done this archery hunting and had a buck follow me or awhile. It works.

So what are the rules in your state? For deer Wisconsin is all over the place. We all get 1 buck tag but depending on your county and zone you can get up to 4 doe tags with it for free. I have 2 buck tags and 6 doe tags for my county. 1 bow and 1 gun buck tag however the doe tags can be filled with either weapon. Our elk are pretty much off limits. Bear is a hard draw with point system making it a once every 5-10 yr thing I'd love to try a mountain hunt sometime but being a meat hunter I think it would be for a cow elk...( No place for a bull on the wall)

That is the Kifaru Universal Gun Bearer. Can be used with any pack that has a shoulder strap and waist belt.

Hey man I love your Hunts . But I don't know if you realize or maybe you just passed it up, I don't know but on minute 7:20 of this film you had a small four-point buck . You can tell it was a buck when he turned and looked away to his right you could see his small rack, I could be wrong but it looks like a small four point buck . If you're ready for a tidal wave of invasive coyotes that eat far more than wolves ever will - Good luck..!!!. Give it 5-7 years after you eradicate the wolves / watch the game numbers go up & then drop to nothing as soon as the coyotes / I mean Coywolves - breed like rabbits !!!! You'll never be able to control them....

@@thistledewoutdoors3331 you know there was a big study conducted by anti grazing advocates and the sum of it was without grazing and management the land was less productive for wildlife. Our wild areas have been mowed down for millennia and need management to thrive. Same for forests.

i honestly think that your washington state wildlife game warden should start selling doe tag too... too many does and not enough buck to doe ratio is unhealthy ... too many does and not much buck, so killing some doe population will probably help to improve a healthier whitetail herd... just look at cali, they have so many does and very few bucks, they should start selling doe tags too to keep the ratio balanced and gives a young fawn buck chance to improve.

Does are needed to keep the numbers up... It only takes 1 buck to impregnate an entire herd of does...... Our deer numbers were so low in Wisconsin here due to the super cold polar vortex + high snow fall count that we had buck only tags for awhile ,,, which is crazy because we usually have so many deer that you can buy a couple extra does tags !!!.... No doe tags means that your local herd numbers are in the dump

@@thistledewoutdoors3331 true, but too many does doesn't mean you'll have more bucks, do your research and it'll show you that keeping the doe herd to a balance you'll have a healthier buck ratio... my friend un wisconsin, had 100 acres of land and very few matured buck with big horn, because he has too many does eating all the nutrients a buck needs to grow healthy big antlers... we stayed king all the big old matured does off for 3 years and left all the bucks out... we started to see bigger racks and more bucks.. look at any state that doesn't managed the doe herd, their bucks is few and smaller in body and horn mass.

There are doe tags, but our population has been getting hit hard. At this point, allocating more doe tags would be detrimental to health herd.

Here's why you don't even as many animals such as you did 25 years ago. Our game department has really screwed up by introducing wolves back into things. Plus they have been an issue for ranchers too. Total non sense
