Simply because you asked for comments I'm going to say, I really liked and preferred the hawthorn illuminated shot. To me it looked like the tree and the similarly illuminated landscape were in some kind of communication A really nice shot
Some lovely image, I liked the tree in the sunlight best of the two, Plus I like your fist water fall, and then I did enjoy the colour of your oak trees. Keep well.
Another fantastic video James, that last shot was fantastic. Such an inspiration, watching your videos inspired me to have a try at my own style which recently uploaded. Thank you for these snippets of happiness in these tough times.
Beautiful images James. I prefer the illuminated tree on the first set. The last image is stunning. I have no idea where it is so well done for finding some wonderful oak trees and a truly, gorgeous composition. You deserve loads more followers IMHO. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Chris! This was all filmed in Glen Auldyn which is a location I've never shot at before. Beautiful valley and didn't see another soul the entire time. I'd high recommend giving it a visit 🙂

Great vlog. I preferred the image with the tree illuminated - it has more interest and depth. Loved the precarious tripod 'splits' for the waterfall image - could almost feel the strain! The last image of oaks and river is an absolute corker.
I also like the illuminated tree photo better, but my favorite is the last photo of the river with the oak trees on both sides. As always really enjoy your channel. Looking forward to your video.
Second shot with illuminated tree is better IMO. With the tree in shade I tend to look past it to asses the viewscape in a graphic manner as you would with some English landscape painters of the mid to early 19th century. With the tree illuminated you still have the graphic aspect of the viewscape background, but you have this small wirey interloper vying for significance in its lone existence. The last shot reminds of Simon Baxter. Very nice work James.(you're starting to tug on my wallet again)

Yeah, I sort of agree about losing the B'roll and the landscape vlog tropes. A scene setter is fine and a short adieu. Talking through your reasoning is fine (even some photo-philosophy) but too many see this as an opportunity to waffle on. You've never been guilty of any of these en masse. Sometimes its worth just listening to the audio without the visuals to see if its informative, and vice versa with the sound turned down. If it's not useful or beautiful ...... its filler. Lovely shots, I'd probably go with the shady tree and I can't resist a little river wading either. Unfortunately the weather has not been too kind for autumnal shots and some of the best colours were blown/washed away.
Thanks Iain. That's a very nice tip on focusing on audio without visuals and vice versa. The challenge I find is that as the actor, director and editor all rolled into one it can be easy to become attached to footage to the point that you are unable to review it objectively. For me this is the greatest challenge to creating good videos - a challenge that I sometimes pass with flying colours and fail badly at others. I guess that's the challenge of it - if it was easy it wouldn't be so fun! 🙂

Thanks Joseph! I had scouted the tree around 18 months ago, so I knew the shot I wanted there. The other shots were less planned out although I was aware of potential in those areas 👍
Wow, that was fun and very educational. Like your new formula for the video. My favorite picture was the forest at the end especially the beautiful green colors and patterns of the dark trunks and branches against the lighter foliage.

Hey James, First of all I have to thank you for all your great, detailed and never boring landscape photography (and astrophotography) vlogs, which are very interesting and inspiring. They force me to go out and do some landscape photography. Luckily, the region in which I'm living doesn't lack good photographic scenes for landscape photography and the motivation to go out and shoot can be massively increased by just looking out of the window unlike in a city or urban area where you have to drive a lot to get to a scene or landscape which is, from a landscape photographer's perspective, worth to photograph. (Please don't get me wrong, there are plenty of really amazing street and architecture photographers out there and you can shoot great images in the city, but for landscape and nature photography a city is probably not the best location you can get.) Actually I just wanted to thank you, but I have to apologise for all this barley uninteresting mess of additional words that came with it. Best regards. Julian
Worthy post for the season, James. Lit tree works well, IMO - subject is, after all, the tree. Second venue a tight spot, w/splayed tripod - touchy but you made it work. Final image has wonderful painterly quality. B-roll w/gate (especially the gate) has become a YT landscape photography “trope” - overdone and ripe for banishment😃 - no kidding. What would happen if you didn’t close the gate?
Cheers Paul - appreciate the feedback. I think there's a lot of YT landscape photography tropes now unfortunately. I'm trying to make a conscious effort to avoid them and give my videos a more unique feel but its a challenge. I'll avoid gate b-roll shots from here on in 😂 If I didn't close the gate...I'd be going straight to YT landscape photographer hell 😂

Thanks Timothy - sure, I just plugged in 1.4 for all the to camera pieces for simplicity but totally agree that some of the sections could have been improved with a narrower aperture. I'll keep that in mind for future
This was a treat James thank you. You know I'm sure the broll of you going through that gate and it not shutting exactly the first go has happened to you the exact same way in a vlog from last year. It was a while ago. Which is then followed by you coming down the style steps. I remembered it because I remember thinking how much effort and time goes I to shots like that and of course the difference between actual miles and vlogging miles lol. I loved the illuminated hawthorn tree and loved how the gaps in the clouds shaded the near background and the distant background was also illuminated. All that could have improved that would have been a ray of light hitting the hawthorn through clouds illuminating just the tree. Just beautiful. And the last image too was beautiful. Must be hard to decide what stage you want the water at. Curtain of white mist or show some subtle texture and to build the other settings around that setting. Really do enjoy these vlogs and aspire to learn as much as experts like you have to offer. Thanks for sharing James.

Just come back from Dartmoor where I had similar conditions and took what I thought were some cracking photos of a sunlit tree against a hillside in shadow. I think my shutter speed was about 1/30 sec as well but it was obviously not fast enough to freeze the movement in the tripod from the wind - all the shots were unsharp 😪
With the new Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 S lens now available, do you see much of a need for such a wide aperture lens for Landscape Photography other than for Astronomy pictures?
I personally don't see much use for the wider aperture for daytime landscape photography. I'm sure it will be an outstanding lens...but I'd have to sell a kidney to afford it - the 14-30 is perfectly fine for me.
