I ran exactly this test 8 years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qrE8krwTuqk.html - I took temperature measurements with an open element air filter under the hood, and then again with an enclosed box. The results were eye-opening, I would never run an open filter under the hood.

I would have loved to have seen his IATs from all 3 dyno sessions. Definitely IATs and lack of octane were most of his issues. I'm actually impressed that he gained 31 whp with all of that working against him. My personal truck still doesn't dyno for $h!t, but seems to do OK on the "dragstrip dyno."

Wrong cam Richard! Clearly needs that hot air intake cam, in combination, with that max power low octane tune.

He should be able to run at least 25-26 degrees of timing on 93 octane even on a hot ambient air temp day. These factory ecus are very sensitive to knock and you must desensitize the knock sensors a few percent, and as a tuner you need to understand what is an acceptable amount of false knock. Also his motor mounts could be broken like i see alot which can cause a false knock situation. although i dont do much dyno tuning, I do alot of street tuning on factory gm ecus. i would love to take a look at the timing curve, and PE value his tuner was using. i also bet you he disabled the ve and just tuned the maf, Which these ecus need both maf and ve to work in conjunction for the dynamic air to calculate properly. It could be that the ve table wasnt touched, He tuned maf only, and when the ecu was looking for a calculation the ve was so off it caused knock due to a lean condition from the ve table sill being stock. Even with high rpm disable, Its impossible to completely disable ve.

Always amazes me that people want to tune their car but want it to give max power on dirty dishwater grade fuel.

My favorite is when guys say, I tuned it myself. Unless you are a professional tuner, you leave power, drivability, and and dependability on the table. If you want the most for your mods, factor in a minimum of $500 for a good dyno tune. If your tuner doesn't take 2 or 3 hours to do a complete tune and road test, find a new tuner

I’ve seen this attitude in many industries. Archery and auto. People get a notion that you guys are just selling stuff and it’s all exaggerated at best. Then they find out there’s a missing piece of the puzzle. Ugh.

Good tuners are hard to find but they do exist. Tuning for max power is repeatable but a street tune is very subjective.

I had a 99 S10 Blazer w/a 5.3L swap. Its filter was open and down behind the drivers front headlight. Tuner was complaining that it was pulling timing due to high IAT. The filter was cool to the touch! But I thought OK lets eliminate that and on the dyno I rotated the filter to point upward and into cooler air. BAM!! It picked up 35hp and I had no knock sensor activity. I must say I was shocked because the filter pointed downward felt cool to the touch.

His issue was the extra 90⁰ of air intake temp lol . Makes me think back to the days of the lid flip on stock carb cars .

Richard I'm building a 8.1 liter this winter ,probably will stroke it for more cubic inches,my question for you is I am going to use dart intake . So would one firing order cam be better performing than another with that na intake! THANKS

Firing order makes almost no difference in power if that is the only change

Is it possible to make decent NA power on lower octane gas? As long as the compression is relatively low right? It get real pricey filling up a truck tank with 92

Richard how do you feel about using a used cam that is in perfect condition (flat tappet) with a brand new set of lifters? I have been building engines for over 50 years and I was always taught that this was ok. The other thing I was told is if you’re going to reuse lifters make sure they go back where they came from if you were not replacing them.

I build rock crawlers and I've seen intake air temp as high as 174 on air filters stuck on the throttle body!

I had to make a air intake for my swap. I data logged 150+ degree iats at the track and it didnt drop much by the end of the pass. I made an enclosed box and duct now im seeing 40 to 50 degree lower iats.

Chassis Dyno take your horsepower and torque and divided by 3 and then multiply by 4 and then you should come up with the same number as you got from the engine dyno

By that math, my combination makes 440/480 - full exhaust and acc drive. I'm OK with that given the relatively low performance parts thrown together.
