This is fantastic landing Dr. Toole in an interview! He seems to be such a nice person! I hope I am that sharp at his age. “There are no perfect room, no perfect speakers, no perfect recording and no perfect ears!” So we need to be more humble about thinking we know what the best speakers are!

I think we should be more demanding of excellent speakers. There's no perfect fuel, no perfect road, and no perfect car, but that doesn't mean we should increase our level of humility: some things area clearly better than others, and we should demand that as consumers.
@fetoole

@@stevenswall I agree. Making a neutral sounding $10,000 loudspeaker should not be a challenge, nor a surprise when it happens. However, there is no reason why competent engineering cannot deliver dangerously similar sound quality at much lower prices - just with less industrial design and at more modest sound levels. It is happening now, but it should happen much more frequently.

One thing that I thought was interesting was when he said that we here the bumps in response more than the ringing in drivers. I’ve always heard how important spectral decay is in speakers, and especially in rooms. People who give advice on acoustics say that you can’t eq out bass peaks and such because it’s really the spectral decay that makes it sound resonant. Yet, someone with great credibility just cited research that says the opposite. It really shows how maybe confirmation bias has lead people to believe these things. The double blind test doesn’t lie after all. The bookshelves speaker debate is always so interesting as well. I am always so torn between whether towers are actually needed given subwoofer’s existence. So often you hear people say that bookshelves can’t deliver the midbass that towers can and I just see that as bad design. It could also be the crossover design that Dr. Toole mentioned, most receivers have 1st order high pass and 3rd order low pass because they assume the speaker response will be rolling off. I really wish they made that adjustable Like you mentioned the only true advantage I can see is output potential. I’m glad that some of the great minds in audio share the same opinion. Double blind test really are such a great thing because while people can scoff at measurements for not being actual listening, these blind tests are done with such depth that their significance factors are very accurate, and all with subjective data. So the subjectivists can’t dismiss it while being logical at the same time. Yet we still hear people say things like “flat doesn’t sound good”. It’s truly disappointing because there are companies and people that put so much time and effort into making speakers that are objectively good, which translates to subjectively good, only to be dismissed for another well known brand that is just selling with their name. Anyway. Great Video! One of the best or possibly the best yet! Sometimes when people do interviews they get so sidetracked that they don’t actually focus on information, you do a great job balancing these, which makes an hour and a half video easily watchable.

That was fantastic, and perhaps a good indicator of how nerdy I am with this stuff as I was literally on the edge of my seat for some of Dr. Toole's responses. That bit about vertical dispersion not being as important because we hear in the horizontal plane was really interesting, especially because treating ceilings with absorption tends to have a REALLY big effect every time I've done it. I'm not really sure how to reconcile those two things.

Useful and interesting. Thanks for this. Kudos for focusing on the topic, what is important why. I think your audio enlightenment project is something quite unique. Awesome interview, so much throuth in what Floyd said. I met Floyd's co-worker from NRC in 90s at my friends garage - Claude Fortier, he runs State of Art Acoustics in Ottawa. Claude also designed speakers for John Ötvös, the Waveform Mach. One time he showed up one day with his Turbo charged Acura Type R, 'very slightly' customized for track in Callaboge. Holly ... , this guy is like walking acoustic/electronics section of NRC, way too technical for me to talk to. It would cool to throw pair of my 2ways in the state of constant redesign process in the car, bring them to Floyd ask for his opinion. I used to mess around with IACC methods in my car; using small fullrange drivers in the headrest playing the inverse of the opposite side's measured response at the ear (measured with binaural mics). Was quite an interesting result but not really something that made sense for daily use because as soon as you moved a fraction of an inch it all went out the window.
@josegazal701
@josegazal701 3 года назад
@@ErinsAudioCorner I know. That is why you struck me in the first place. I saw a video in which you described your xtc. If I were you, I wouldn’t underestimate the improvements he’s done and where he has brought the technology into. He dealt with almost every deal breaker, including the head in vise problem. He tracks user’s head and adjust the xtc filter on the fly. Measures the user binaural room impulse response. If his team could not yet synthesize a HRTF from users photographs is because the problem is really hard. A HRTF from a body scan is SOTA, but computational intensive. Any idea how he could substitute acoustic measurements for a simpler user procedure? That would bring 3d to the masses.

Curious if any of the guys at Harman know any of the guys at Genelec... Seems like either Genelec took the research and ran with it, or independently found the same things with whatever research they do!
@homeboi808
@homeboi808 3 года назад
I mean, not just them. Tons of companies know about the research. KEF and some smaller companies even publish their own Spinorama data. The large companies that don’t likely do it to preserve their slice of market share. If they know they can’t compete in designing an excellent speaker, then they can focus on making one they know lifelong customers are used to (sound signature wise) and work on making them look nice for the price as well. Or, they do it for tradeoffs. We all know crossing an 8” woofer to a 1” tweeter without a waveguide will have crossover beaming, but that 8” woofer allows a lot more bass than a 6.5” woofer would.
@fetoole

I met Ilpo Martikainen, the originator of Genelec, now sadly no longer with us, in the 80's when he was getting started. We liked each other and shared experiences when we met at AES conventions. He would interrupt demonstrations on the show floor and give me a private demonstration showing how he had designed small, medium and large monitors that exhibited remarkably similar timbral signatures. I remember Mozart played through mini and monster monitors sounding very real. Needless to say it was done by working with the right measurements. Most in the biz at the time seemed not to care at the time. So, they definitely "took the research and ran with it" - from the inception of both the research and Genetic as a company.

Thing about sound comparison is that it does seem super Relative. Like colors. The challenge is having space between the start / stop points. The sounds really need to touch each other. No space between. Memory and bias kicks in too strongly otherwise. The song would have to stay constant to per speaker switch so also challenging. But also timberal change seems to require a couple seconds of brain scrambling for adjustment so it sounds phasey for a moment. But this is my internetedcation hack experience - does anyone feel strongly otherwise ?

That said, my *opinion* is that vertical i less important than horizontal. I do have more thoughts on it but that's really the simplest statement I can make.

I listen to pipe organ music, and a subwoofer is a must have. I know you can’t hear it but if you don’t feel it, it doesn’t sound right.

If I understand correctly, a resonance shows up as a peak in all of the frequency response curves, off-axis as well as on-axis. And apparently it is the energy bump (rather than the ringing itself) that we perceive. So, what happens to the audibility of a resonance if we remove the frequency response peaking via EQ? To what extent can we reasonably expect to "fix" resonances with EQ?
@ajsoundfield9652
@ajsoundfield9652 3 года назад
In general, if the frequency bumps track off axis then flattening with EQ will mitigate audibility. Actually, multi-sub "smoothing" EQ does just that. There could be exceptions at >sub frequencies, but thats rare and a chapter, not 2 sentences.

The loudspeaker transducers in a system are minimum-phase devices, so, if one has accurate anechoic data showing the center frequency and Q of a resonance in the transducer, a matched minimum-phase parametric EQ will not only eliminate the bump in the frequency response, but the ringing in the time domain. Low-frequency room resonances also behave as minimum-phase phenomena so attenuating the bump, attenuates the ringing. However, as I said, evidence indicates that human listeners respond mainly to the spectral bump, not the ringing. The much talked about "smear" in the time domain seems to be active imaginations at work, not scientifically proven facts.

Erin, what software do you use for the room prediction frequency response curves?
@homeboi808
@homeboi808 3 года назад
The calculation? If so, it’s a formula based off the anechoic data: 44% Sound Power 44% Early Reflections 12% Listening Window. Most of the time it’s very close to the Early Reflections curve.

What @homeboi808 said. You can find the calculation for each metric in the standard. Here’s a link (they’ll send you a download link once you register, but it’s all free): shop.cta.tech/products/standard-method-of-measurement-for-in-home-loudspeakers The software I use for this, though, is Klippel software. It’s in their listening zone software option. But you’ll need a way to gather the data and for that I use their Near field Scanner. www.klippel.de/products/rd-system/modules/nfs-near-field-scanner.html Alternatively, if you are doing the measurements manually, check out this free software: kimmosaunisto.net/Software/Software.html

Dr Toole shits on people who don't do abx blind testing when reviewing speakers. This is basically all the reviewers on RU-vid. I 100% agree with Dr Toole. What people don't understand is placebo is very powerful and even more poweful when coming listening to speakers that can be worth thousands. Always question your senses, its got us this far in science.

On the topics of compression, I remember Andrew Jones in a interview talking about how voice coils on tweeters are heating up in seconds and a few minutes on woofers. So like Dr. Toole said, I don't think extendeding out that thermal compression test to long time periods would be of much benefit. Link to that section of the interview - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tjgd-v31k_I.html

Wow ! What a treat :) Thanks Erin and Dr Toole. In a small room I find that having a separate subwoofer and bookshelf speakers is preferable to floor-standing speakers. With a separate sub it allows you to place it in a position that gives the most neutral sound in the lower frequencies for the listening position. With just floor-standing speakers you don't have that option.
@fetoole
@fetoole 3 года назад
That's right, the locations of floor standing L and R speakers are not ones that are optimum for subwoofer locations, especially in multi-sub systems. BTW, people generally are not aware that with multiple subs there is a substantial efficiency gain, so the subs can be much smaller - less expensive. It's in my book.

@@fetoole Thanks 🙏 I will have to purchase your book, do you recommend using multiple subwoofers that are identical ? and how would one split the signal between them? two subs input signal from the Left channel and two subs input signal from the right channel ?
@fetoole
@fetoole 3 года назад
@@iantilling7138 It's both simpler and more complex than that - there are basically two methods of employing multiple subs: passive and active. It is explained in some detail in my book, and in AES papers and preprints under Todd Welti's name. Todd did the research. The passive approach works predictably only in rectangular rooms. It utilizes two or four identical subs arranged so that they destructively interfere with (attenuate) specific room resonances, reducing seat-to-seat variability over a defined listening area. There are several options, but four in the corners is very efficient, while showing good reduction in bass variability. The active approach can work with different subwoofers, with much more flexibility in where they are located, in rooms of any shape. However, it requires measurements, an optimization calculation, and electronic processing in the signal path to each sub to adjust signal level, delay and a parametric EQ. It is called sound field management. In all of these cases the input signal is a mono bass signal from the bass management in audio processors.

@@fetoole Thanks for the information and advice of what to read. I wasn’t aware that there are two approaches with the multiple sub setup. Would you say that the multiple sub setup would be the best method to employ within a studio control room ? A control room with main monitors that are soft fit mounted into the front wall Thanks again 🙏
@fetoole
@fetoole 3 года назад
@@iantilling7138 In some control rooms the concern is only about the sweet spot - where the critical decisions are made. For this, simple EQ will suffice to deliver acceptable bass, but only for one seat. However, other rooms can be large enough to allow musicians, investors and fans to share in the experience and decision making. In that case multiple subs would allow more people to experience similar and similarly good bass. Conclusion, there is a choice.
