Great video! Useful information! However, one of the aspects of AI that we need to be concerned about is that the information that results from a search is often incorrect. Using an example for the video, there are plants that are not photosynthetic ( e.g., the ghost pipe or dodder). So if you are a student, you may get your assignment wrong. If you're an educator, don't rely on the test questions that it spits out for you unless you're entirely familiar with the topic. It also makes things up by cobbling random terms together if it doesn't know the answer. I've seen dozens of cases where it fabricates theories that don't actually in science.
Here is something you have to consider about essays. Would I cheat in essays? Absolutely. Why? Here are a few reasons. -I fucking suck at essays. -It is impossible to get any feedback or improve. I get an F, and our class is too overcrowded and our teacher too busy for them to spend many hours that would be required to make me improve. Usually I would not get any feedback at all, and if I really insist on it, the best I could hope for is the teacher giving me a C so I fuck off. However, teachers could instruct their students to cheat in a more productive way! A thing you have to realize is that not only can ChatGPT write you an essay, it can also grade YOUR essay, provide feedback, suggest ways to improve it, explain concepts you do not understand, explain how to structure an essay, and in general, everything you need to write a good essay yourself. For free - consider that normally this would cost a pretty penny, unless you have access to good public education(I don't). So while in both cases you technically cheated, as in, used ChatGPT to write you an essay, would you really be better off if you didn't cheat in the second example?
I think you're hitting the nail on the head in a lot of points. Classes are crowded, we as teachers do find it really hard to give quality feedback to all students (I promise we're trying though!), and not all students have been taught how to properly write an essay in the first place! I talk about in the video how we as teachers can use ChatGPT to get feedback on student work, but your absolutely right we can teach students how to use it themselves so they don't need to rely on their teacher. It's a wonderful tool, and you've got the right idea about how it can be used to 'cheat' (but I know you really mean, learn!) Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
I think homework will probably be weighted significantly less in the future as a part of your overall grade for this very reason. The in class tests/quizzes/projects and in class work will count for significantly more.
Thanks for the comment! In Australia (or at least my school) we don't have any homework count towards grades, I agree that this is the way to go as well.
So far my school has been big on figuring out way to detect any cheating with the software, but other than that encouraging it's ethical use in the classroom. So far so good!
I agree. That's actually what I talk about in the middle third of the video! I'm excited to see how education changes over the next few years, hopefully in a way that better prepares our students for modern society.
Hey Mark, I just wanted to know if the link that you shared with us of ChatGPT 3, is free of cost? or is it cost us later or have an automatic money deduction system once we sign up??
Hey Sadaf, at this stage ChatGPT is free and won't ask you to sign up or anything. I've heard down the line it will be a subscription based system (you won't automatically sign up) but I don't know when that will be. Hoping it's later rather than sooner, but enjoy the program while it lasts!
Adapt or die they say. I'm going to do my best to work with the AI (as I went through in the back end of the video) rather than against it. I mean if kids are going to be entering society and a workforce built around AI, they should be using it in school.
