It fun to hear the other side of how we precive each others... as you say: For alot of Americans, Danes can seem offstandish. For alot of Danes, Americans seems superficial. And that culture difference can be a big shock, to the other party

About the topic of learning Danish as a foreigner in Denmark, I have to say that as long as Danes get a feeling that you are really putting in an effort at learning Danish, they will accept you fairly quickly. It is true that it is technically not an issue to get by in Denmark speaking English but it is also true that it will become sort of a barrier after some time if no effort is made by the foreigner living in Denmark at at least trying to learn Danish.

Dear. Miranda, I love your way of describing Danes as M.and M’s even though at first my thought was that we had the shell outside and was nuts inside. 😉 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I really like your idea of live-streaming a lot more,but I don’t know if every week would work for you , that’s a tight schedule to uphold . But go for it and see how it develops. Thanks for yet another great video.

Oh I was thinking (perhaps I said this wrong in the video) every other week to start and depending how that goes maybe shift to once a month. But the idea is to build a program where we talk and debate a subject live with inputs from viewers on the chat to interact more real time. We’d also have segments like try it on Tuesday to give us a slight break and general discussion about the events of the previous weeks. Still working on the format but it definitely wouldn’t be weekly :).

44 years since we came to live in Denmark. I was 6 years old. One day at school I wasn´t paying attention in class and my teacher aproached me and asked what I was thinking about and I answered that in Argentina the sun always shines. We came as chilean refugees, but spended 4 years in Argentina before being invited to Denmark. I´m now 50 and still not fond of the short and dark days of winter :D

I think the reason you also hear Danes (especially older ones) complaining about the weather in Denmark is, that it has changed a lot over the last few decades due to global warming. Winters before: cold with frequent snow, ground snow-covered for long periods at a time. Winters now: 2-10 degrees Celsius, windy, foggy/moist/soggy, gloomy, less than 5 days of any kind of snowfall per year, and mostly melts within a couple of hours. Snow on ground provides light (reflection), no snow means everything is darker. Summers before: occasional heatwaves, but weather was generally quite stable, meaning that a sunny day meant a sunny day. There were raindy days too, of course, but many nice summer days. Summers now: generally very unstable, with heavy showers almost daily, interrupting periods of sunshine. You can't just go somewhere, knowing that the weather will remain dry. Also tends to be very windy. I miss the beautiful winter landscapes, as well as the nice all-day sunny days.

I have spoken with Chat GPT for a while now and have s plus subscription. I use it to help me program a website (just for fun) and I am learning a lot. Every time I stumble upon a concept I don't know, I just ask it to explain it. It means that I don't get stuck in these dead in the water periods anymore. So that is cool. And then I use it for inspiration. As a tabletop roleplayer I often have to make a lot of description for locations and characters. GPT is great for this; while I don't use its output directly, is is great for getting started. The latest thing I tried was "Describe 10 passengers who would be riding on the Orient Express in the year 1891" and it gave me a great ensemble to start working with.

Congrats on the 5 year anniversary and your new house 🎉🥂🍾 😊 I moved to the US when I was 21 yo and my impression of Americans then were not so much outgoing but more superficial. They were initially easy to talk to but impossible to get close with. This was in regards to women, since I had a boyfriend and the only guys I had a chance to get to know were those who asked me out. I remember the frustration of not being able to go from pleasant superficial chatter to becoming real friends who can share more personal things and go visit each other at home. Today I feel that Americans are very outgoingly friendly but actually more reserved and guarded than Danes when it comes to truly opening up to new people. I guess there’s a lot of small nuances in tone of voice, mimic, choice of words, topic, unspoken social norms, etc. that guides us in the meeting with others, so that it will always feel easier and more comfortable when meeting/engaging with strangers who shares the same cultural background 😊 I love visiting the US and I find Americans to be very friendly, generally helpful and charming people, and had I stayed I’m sure I would eventually have been able to crack the code of how to weasel my way into their hearts 😂 After all we are all just humans with more or less the same needs and desires 😁

Congratz on year 5 in Denmark. We are happy to have you. :) Miranda, you are probably like me, and a lot of other Danes. I call it social introvert. In English it sounds wrong though. I am an Introvert. I can have fun all by my self for a week and not miss seeing anyone. But then when I am at a social gathering (where i feel comfortable) I am very social and will talk about anything, for a very long time, if allowed. So both social and introvert. Happy Easter.

It would be really interesting hearing more about "all" your little linguistic discoveries, when you start noticing the many deep similarties between the basic vocabularies of our two related Germanic languages ( i.e. loads of very similar basic cognate words that are often just some simple sound shifts apart at the most ) as well as between their basic grammatical structures, which combined makes English a fairly easy language to learn for Danes ( and for the other Scandinavians with their two very similar languages ) - as if we already by magic "know" half of a basic older Pseudo English in advance and then "just" have to fill in the gaps and climb a few hurdles here and there like the peculiar use of "do" and the use of "-ing" with verb tenses etc.

It *is* a useful rule that verbs change from the infinitive to the present tense by adding an -r, because it has very few exceptions. Bear in mind, though, that Danish does not distinguish between the progressive present ('is' + -ing in the 3rd person singular) and the simple present (-s in the 3rd person singular), so -r corresponds to both, and historically, it is the same thing as the English -s.

My only complaint regarding the weather: I so much miss the snow and cold that I experienced in my childhood. Back then (circa 1970) we scated on our local lake during winters and (stupid young) people drove their cars out on the ice. One of the cars went thru unfortunately. Nowadays I don't say "yahoo, we got snow this Christmas!" but "yahoo, we got rain this Christmas!" Sad really. 😕 Wish I'd been born in northern Norway. 🇳🇴⛄ (Been there many times and love it). The absolute best way in my opinion to learn a foreign language, us to listen to it. I grew up in Southern Jutland, where we had DR, and 3 German tv stations. And my kids already learned a tonne of English, before learning in School, just by playing video games, and chat with players online.

LOL a while back I was playing with ChatGPT and being a Dane living in the US here was my question and the answer I got back :D Q: As the expert I would like a short but funny fact telling story about Denmark, what is unique and what is the most fun about the country and the people there ChatGPT Answer: Did you know that Denmark has a tradition called "Kagemand"? It's a cake shaped like a man, typically decorated with frosting and candy, and served at children's birthday parties. But what's really funny about this tradition is that it's not uncommon for adults to also request a Kagemand for their birthdays! It's become a bit of a running joke that no matter how old you are, you're never too old for a Kagemand. And when it comes to the people of Denmark, they have a reputation for being some of the happiest in the world. Maybe it's because they have access to free healthcare and education, or maybe it's because they enjoy the simple pleasures in life, like cozying up with a good book and some hot chocolate. Whatever the reason, the Danes have truly mastered the art of hygge, a concept that roughly translates to "coziness" or "contentment." So if you're ever feeling down, just remember that a slice of Kagemand and some hygge might be just what you need to lift your spirits! ---------------------------------- Then to make it even more fun I had an AI generated video telling this story... LOL now I was laughing so hard... it's the same as if I have CarPlay read my danish text in the car... LOL... this IA tools do not speak Danish :D studio.d-id.com/share?id=20c66f37d9d624b39fc0d33283fb0b87&fbclid=IwAR3glUBcgTrYOR5R-wdLrdllja5vdGa7PZWrmyGpoVyzO1Wm-0Gd5vuTZ9o

I think cars should be added; prices are off the charts as it is a taxed object to buy, own, and drive (gas and possibly upcoming road pricing); there is a reason for the many bikes, etc. Also, parking is troublesome (do not get a full size) Even the driving lanes are pretty narrow. Houses and the land on which they are built are also taxed. Tap water is a tax item, and you pay for sewer at the same volume Dentists are not part of free health care, and they are expensive.

Thank you for another great vlog 👌 Er at the end of a word is present tense.: at tale - jeg taler, jeg talte. I think you were talking about Nouns, Josh: Et hus, (a house) huset (the house) en bil (a car) - bilen (the car)
@TravelinYoung
@TravelinYoung Год назад
Thanks! I was actually talking about present tense verbs and drawing a comparison to nouns in that you place en or et at the end to indicate “the” being before when translated in the case of a noun. For verbs for “he is talking” you say “han taler”. And “er” is the word for “is”, so it is a construct to help me remember how to probably say or recognize present tense - placing “is” or “er” at the end of the word.

Re language: I found German impossible to learn because its grammar is crazy (just like Danish grammar). On the other hand it was really easy to learn English since it has very little grammar. It’s a comparative thing, though. Compared to Americans, Danes are reserved. That doesnt mean they aren’t open and welcoming but you can be open and welcoming and still wait for someone else to make the first move out of respect for privacy. In the US, it is on the existing group to welcome someone new regardless of privacy. Like if you move to a new neighborhood, it is expected that the neighbors introduce themselves within the first few days (at least where I am from) and welcome you to the community. It’s really the opposite here. That doesnt mean it’s bad. It’s just different. - M
