Chatting With Nutts - Episode #69 - Nutts After Dark ft YOU! 

I am in the middle of Expanse #4 and am really liking it. It's not overly complex, the scifi is interesting (especially if you read the short stories too) and I really like the mystery elements too

I have to admit I listen to chatting with nutts to sleep. But I do watch the episode all the way through at some point so you get multiple views from me haha. I love these chats!

I feel you on needing a change in life. I've worked in tech basically since being out of college (late 30s now) and have felt really unmotivated lately. I'm looking at changing industries, maybe in the medical field or something to get away from working at a desk for a while. Love your content Jimmy, I've been binging your entire CWN series over the past 6 months or so, and it's been awesome.

I feel you on series. I'm taking it one series at a time, one genre at a time and its greatly improved my reading enjoyment. I've been focusing on Liveship Traders (on Ship of Destiny 😎) with some shorter works inbetween (re-read McCarthy's The Road and read some Daphne Du Maurier) and I'm loving doing it that way. I'm getting back to Lonesome Dove and Boy's Life afterwards. After that back to Dandelion Dynasty 😎

I acutally don't listen to these when I want to sleep, I listen to them when I want comfort. And I am so glad I saved this episode for when I was feeling down, because mental health has been shite and you just singlehandedly brightened my day!! Loved to hear about all the exciting reading plans for the year, regardless of whether you are actually going to get to them or not. Hope they all live up to your expectations! Cheers, Jimmy :)))

Re: Translations My taste in books are very similar to yours and I tend to translation shop. Usually, something published by Penguin ends up winning out so now I just start there and haven't been disappointed yet. Re: Heroes Die I'm a huge fan of Stover, but Heroes Die is a less refined version of the style he perfects in book two, Blade of Tyshalle. I think you will absolutely love it regardless, but the next book is a significantly improved product.

I don't listen to fall asleep, I listen while I'm doing something I have to do that's boring, like housework, laundry, etc. It's easier to do those chores when I have something engaging to listen to

Caught this when I could. Get Rich or Die Trying is still one of the Hardest albums ever. Weaveworld was very good in my opinion. More Clive on my TBR this year. Imagica is next. Excellent stream brother.

Dude!!! The Acts of Caine is in my Top 10, maybe Top 5. Everyone always gives up after book one, which is a shame. All four books are 🔥🔥🔥 Just expect him to do something wildly different conceptually with each book. Different as they are, they form a beaufiful whole. SO UNDERRATED!

HYPED for Cloud Atlas!! One of my favorite books ever.

I also struggled with Thomas Covenant but I finished the first trilogy. Even if you didn't like it, I'd highly recommend his space opera, The Gap Cycle. It has ASoIaF rage inducing villains and is paced way faster. Very dark! Super complex characters and an awesome plot. I love it so much!

Sorry for spamming the comments 😂Another russian classic I think you'd really enjoy, is The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It's a Faust interpretation and a satire with the devil arriving in the capital and causing all sorts of mayhem and a love story between our two heroes. In parallel there's a subplot about Pontius Pilatus during Jesus' last days. Very surreal and fantastical. A story about good and evil, cowardice in the face of surveillance and the violence of a totalitarian regime. One of my favorite books of all time.

Sword of the Lictor is also my favorite! Although I love all of them. Considering you did, too, I firmly expect you to like Urth as well. It's so damn out there! One of the things I love about Gene Wolfe is how evocative his prose his. Sometimes he paints a picture that is so mystic and surreal and unfathomable that hides some core truth about life, higher existence and transcendence (sounds way pretentious, I'm sorry, but that's how it feels to me :D), that creates a deep sense of underlying meaning in existence. It very much feels like a spiritual journey.

I second the Michael Katz translations of C&P and Brothers K, much more readable/enjoyable imo

Never Let Me Go is one of my favorite books, it’s very slow so I’m sure you’ll love it when you get to it haha

Two of these really piqued my interest: Ash and the Pliocene portal. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of either, but they both sound like something I would enjoy. I was supposed to read Remains of the Day in college but never did; still have it on my shelf. Movie was good. I really enjoyed Never Let Me Go.

I read Neuromancer recently. It's really good. Although I couldn't connect a lot, I have much respect for it. The technology feels very dated and the characters are on the flat side, but that's ok. The writing style is really something, although I found it a little hard to follow sometimes. Another strength is the atmosphere. Very distinct. I'm glad that I read it, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna continue in the series. The first book can function as a standalone, as I understand it.

Middleage crisis at 33? that means that I'm ancient at 49? Great video as always. You have already an interesting list of books, but I would suggest to add Josè Saramago. I think you could like his novels.

I cant fall asleep to CWN because its too interesting for me to pass out on I use Guild Wars 1 walkthrough by Woodenpotatoes because he has the music volume quite higj which is all done by Jeremy Soule + his soothing voice and its just escapist perfection

Infinite Jest is still my favorite novel ever even though it took me six months to finish. Hes one of the few authors where I wanna absorb every sentence just because he writes so well and humorously, especially the page long run-on sentences. I suggest just sticking with it and enjoy the ride. I dont find him as obtuse as some other cryptic authors

Sarantine mosaic is my favorite GGK, yes, and is one of my favorite series of all time

So when it comes to Russian authors, scientists, mathematicians, etc. there are always many ways of writting their names. This of course also holds for other languahes as well. It is just very common to adapt names for english speaking people. You will see weird spellings of Polish, German, French mathematicians all the time. The slavic ones always get the weirdest treatment, because slavic languages seem to be further removed from English. For instance an inportant Russian mathematician is Andrej Tihonov. But in English his surname will often be written as, get this, Tychonoff. I suppose it is to suggest the correct pronounciation.

I only read Lonesome Dove, no sequels and honestly no plan for them, it was my #1 book last year and probably of all time Also, just gave up on Wheel of Time after book 2, just want vibing with it one bit

Another livestream missed 😢. As another generic white guy who is obsessed with the Vietnam war, I don’t think you’ve mentioned reading any Tim O’Brien. The Things They Carried & Going After Cacciato are great novels. Also, you should read Lonesome Dove asap. I’d be shocked if you didn’t love it. McMurtry’s dialogue is on another level.

"The ending of His Dark Materials is too on the nose" is such an "I read this kids book as an adult" criticism. I read the trilogy when I was 13 and I can assure you it wasn't too on the nose! If you think that it is... consider that you may not be the target audience. And if you read it as a kid and thought it was too on the nose then you're just a smarty pants! 😝

Are you planning on reading Daughter of the Empire this year, it is the closest book I have read to The Game of Thrones with its “ Game of the Council”!!

You mentioned Bookpilled in this, and he recommended a book I'm most definitely going to try called God's Demon by Wayne Barlowe. He likens it to Lord of the Rings but set in hell. Color me intrigued!

The passage is very up and down, has the stand vibe, but I find the characters just have that immortal vibe where other people died so fast and so merciless the main characters just survive it all which the more I thought about the more it annoyed me.

Moby Dick hates me. It has defeated me several times. I have to conquer it before I die!

I loathed The Man in High Castle and decided I'm either too dumb for PKD or he's just a bad writer that people fawn over.
