This is EXACTLY what I was after!!! Thankyou!! I'm playing bass in a band and wanted to control the lights properly rather than have everything on auto. So this is ideal!! :)

Can I ask what your expression pedals are set to MIDI wise? I can't make them chase like yours.

I'm using the Obey 70 with a Tech 21 Midi Moose pedal. Works great and the switches are momentary like stompboxes, which makes it easier to find while you're playing. But also, wanted to add that you can program scenes for the other 15 midi channels as well, so you could actually have 128 scenes for midi channel 1, then another 128 for midi channel 2 and so on...so you could actually have 2,048 different scenes to choose from! Amazing stuff... Yeah, this setup has made my gigs easier as well, playing bass, singing and controlling lights at the same time. I feel like Geddy Lee sometimes! haha...ROCK ON!

twistedhippie Awesome to know, Thanks for the information.. And I will definitely be looking into that tech 21 pedal.. The Behringer is great other than its size, a little to big... Again thank you for your Input, glad to receive some knowledge from other rockers out there doing the same.... ♤《METAL》♤

Derek Johnson It is a lot smaller, but it's pricy. I think it was $180, but well worth it for the build quality and ease of use. Highly recommended, tho. Only drawback live is that it's easy to accidently blackout your patch because it switches so easy...but we've had a lot of praise for our light show using this setup...and didn't have to hire a light guy to look professional.

The foot controller only sends commands to change the scenes already in the Obey 70. The Obey 70 lists 15 banks of 8 scenes = 120 total scenes (plus the six chases) in the MIDI list (even though it says there are 30 total scenes). There is no way to get more than this, unless you add another Obey 70 and set it to a different MIDI channel.

I bought this exact set-up based on the how this video showed the simplicity of it all. Well, I programmed 8 scenes and a couple of chases into my Chauvet 70 and hooked up the brand new, out of the box FCB1010 and...nothing! I can't make it work any way I try. This is really frustrating as I have watched at least 10 videos in programming the FCB1010 and they don't help either. There has to be has to be something more to this. Can you help me out?

D- I wish I could help you out bro. I know the struggle man!!!! I tried numerous things with other pedals that did not work. I made this video in hopes of solving the struggle for everyone, Frustrating is an under statement, especially with no help available. This stuff shouldn't be so complicated. My unit still works as shown thankfully. The only thing I can maybe suggest is possibly having no chases programed in your Chauvet obey 70... that is the only thing different by the sound of it. I don't have any chases programed at all on my unit, just scenes... Hope you get it working dude, if you figure it out keep us posted thanks for watching... Merry Christmas

Hi Derek ! You'll save many lives out there with this Video :) I'm currently gathering informations in order to achieve this, one question comes up to my mind since your setup is working : When you press the UP Switch to change Banks, does it uses the Banks from your Obey70 or the Banks from the FB1010 ? I'm asking this because, technically, the FCB1010 as only 10 Banks, but the Obey has something like 30 Banks (of 8 Scenes). So did you run out of space (if that's clear) ? I mean, Have you been "Blocked" at one point ? or does the FCB1010 keeps going through all your Banks & Scenes ? Thank you for this Great Video, I hope I'll be able to achieve this aswell !

Hey thanks man... I get where you are going.. I'm not really sure on that. I only have 9 banks filled with scenes as of now, I can access all of them via this process, but that is a good question! I have a gig this weekend on the 23... When I get my lights setup I'll make some simple scenes around 20 and up to 30 in the Banks on my obey and I'll let you know if I can access them Banks via the fcb1010 hopefully I can I guess we'll find out get back to you soon... MERRY CHRISTMAS

Dex Games Hey bud, I got some time to look into this matter... So here is what I figured out. The Behringer Fcb1010 Has 10 banks.. 00-09 it accesses 10 scenes out of the obey70 in each bank.100 total scenes can be accessed ...Example: If you go to your Highest bank on the Fcb1010, Highest being 09, Hit button 10 You will acess bank 13 scene 4 from your Chauvet obey 70 that is highest you can access before it resets back to bank 00 on the Fcb1010..... l hope this makes since..

Hey man ! I'm in the same boat as yours. I just found this Brand New Video, really recent, it has been posted like a week ago ! It dives into the Programming of the FCB1010. The most professionnal content I've seen out there on this topic. Here's the Link :goo.gl/v8fqjZ [Don't worry it's a youtube link] PS : If you watch the Comment Section, I've been in touch with them. Apparently they're planning to do a full serie of Tutorials. And seem interested in DMX Control via this Footswitch, in fact I've linked them Derek's Video so they can see what he has done without programming anything. So there's an awesome opportunity here that they'd make an in depth Tutorial regarding this subject. Please keep in touch with us if you can ! If you have any information to share. You might help Hundreds !

And here's the information I promised... After knowing for years that I wanted to control my band's lights with my feet, I stumbled on Derek's video (BIG thanks dude!!!), which seemed to me, like so many of you, exactly what I was looking for. So I went out and bought an Obey 70 and the FBC 1010. I taught myself DMX basics from uTube vids. It is way more simple than it seems. Don't let the 0-255 numbers scare you. If you have half a brain (like me), you will learn the basics in a few days. Now the FBC was a different story, as so many of you here have learned. Bad news is...the pedal does not work out of the box. Good news is...There is a fantastic, although fast, long and simultaneously boring (you'll see what I mean), video on the FCB1010 around (45 min in length) that will teach you MORE than you need to know about midi. I watched it about 5 times all the way through until it stuck. After you learn to assign different midi "notes" to the different pedals, those notes will be sent to the Obey 70 and the corresponding pre-programmed/stored scenes will be triggered. I got that far. Here's where I got stuck, and I'm actually soooooo grateful that I did. I desperately wanted to use the expression pedals to control other DMX features. 2 specifically, a master dimmer to roll the lights to "blackout" at the end of a song and on the second pedal, some sort of speed control that would control the speed of my chases and fades between scenes. After reading for hours and hours and hours and hours, etc... I stumbled onto a few helpful lighting forums and found several people who were looking for the same functionality. They almost all reached the same conclusion... Here's the conclusion...and I'm going to leave it here. You're just going to have to take my word for it.... YOU ARE SO CLOSE!!!!! Here's what you need... I'm assuming if you're already here you own the FCB1010. 2) DMXIS USB/DMX interface and software ($298) 3) UM-ONE USB/MIDI interface ($30) 4) A Laptop. I have a bare-bones chrome book ($189) Skip the Obey 70. I'm ready to leave mine out in front of my house hoping someone will just take it. It is clunky as F, Good to learn on but you will outgrow it quickly. There are 7 DMXIS tutorials on uTube. (That's the software you bought) Really short. 7 minutes each. Watch them all and your mind will be blown. You will never want to come near an Obey-type board. Basically what you get with DMXIS is a virtual "OBEY" that runs on the laptop that is just about 1,000,000 times more powerful and easier to use. And the BIG ONE... Linking your FCB 1010 to DMXIS through MIDI is a breeze with the USB -MIDI (UM-ONE) you bought. You can assign whatever functionality you want to the expression pedals. So so so easy. Trust me... Watch the 7 DMXIS tutorials and if you're like me, your head will almost pop off with excitement. So that's the end of my story, my gift to the uTube universe. Hopefully it saves people time and frustration. Oh, and again... Derek... thanks again for kicking all of this off. You didn't have all the answers but you provided the forum for people to start asking the questions which is almost MORE important. If I ever run into you out in the world, first beer's on me buddy!!! Peace all...

Hi @Derek Johnson! Thanks for this video! It really helped up make our decision to do the same. I've got my note on commands all programmed, but I can't get the expression pedals to fade the lights or run the Speed Time commands. Is there any way you can hook up your FCB1010 to the FCB1010 Midi Editor app (I use a UM-ONE) and "receive SysEx" from your controller and see what the expression pedal settings are? What you do it amazing, but I need to assign: "Controller 0-127, Minimum and Maximum" values. Nothing I'm trying is working. Help, please! Love what you did here! Can't wait to try this next gig! :)

Been using FCB1010 with Obey 40. very nice. ....has anyone found a way to trigger Chases with MIDI Note-On function ( chases 1-6 are midi note numbers 120-125). 1)I has been able to successfully assigned the pedals on the 1010 to the midi note numbers, 2) the Obey40 shows that it receives those note numbers and displays the proper chase # on the display. however 3) it is not functioning in a latch ( i.e. you have to hold down the pedal to stay on the assigned chase#) almost like the midi note OFF info is sent when the foot leaves the pedal. 4) and while the display indicates the Chase active, it is not

My FCB1010 to control my Obey 40 was not plug and play. I have figured out how to program the midi notes to each pre-set button for each scene. How did you manage to turn the pre-set button on/off. I can only hit button 1 and not turn off/blackout unless I switch to button 2, 3, 4.... when I go through the buttons to switch scenes mine did not go to scene 1 bank 2 when I got to button 9. Please help!!

Hey people!!! With this pedal, I literally just took it out of the box brand spanking new, plugged in a Midi cable and did as I showed on the video... No programming to the Fcb1010 at all, everything works fantastic.... Where mine was purchased brand new from Sweetwater, I'd assume that any new pedal would work the same without doing any programming... wish I could tell you all more, but I have no idea how to do any programming on the fcb1010 foot controller. I'm just glad it worked for me Plug and play out of the box....maybe I got lucky? If anyone knows any good Tricks let me know that'd be great... thanks for watching... Rock On!!!!!
@chrisw1462
@chrisw1462 6 лет назад
Sir... that sounds impossible. The stock FCB-1010 sends only one Note per switch. According to the Obey manual, you need to send two notes for what you did - one for the scene, and a different one (126) for Blackout. It also does not have the ability to Toggle what it sends when you push the foot switch. If you program it for Bank 5, scene 7, that is what it will send every time. It always sends the same note, with velocity 64 when you press it, and velocity 0 when you release it. In order for the toggle effect shown in your video to work, it would need a replacement chip - custom firmware. I know all this because I have and FCB-1010, and I bought and installed the UnO custom firmware that allows toggling (and a lot of other things) because I needed those features. If what you say is true, you must have purchased the FCB-1010 from someone who already changed the firmware (its a PROM, if you know about those things) for it to do what we see it doing. Therefore it cannot be "brand spanking new". If you somehow got a returned unit that already had that change done, you saved yourself $20, but there is no way a stock unit can do what it does in your video.

Chris W Hey man, I'm just stumped with this whole deal... I bought my obey 70 about four years ago and have struggled to get a working foot pedal.. Starting out I bought used, 2 different midi foot controllers with no luck! the first being a art x-11 then I bought a Rolland fc-200, again no results... Finally fed up with nothing working I decided to buy New. After reading numerous forums, I Purchased the Behringer Fcb1010 as a last Harrah... Like I said I purchased the pedal brand new from Sweetwater. My experience with Sweetwater has always been top notch!!!! I cant see them selling me a used item purposely without saying so. As far as the pedal being used and returned there is a possibility, But when I opened it there was no signs of use what so ever.. It looked as new as new can be. Part of Me wants to Buy another Fcb1010 just to test if it will work the same, but I have beter things to spend $150 on.. everthing in the Video is as I say all true.. Sorry things are not working.. I'm just wanting to help you all out. But There really isn't much more I can add, means my video isn't working out for some of you.. I'm just as boggled as the rest of you.. Why my pedal works as shown, but it's not the same for others????? I Appreciate your input, I'm hoping there will be a solution brought up in the comments eventually but until then good luck...

Hey Derek, good info here mate. Can you tell me how you programmed the expression pedals to control the lights? I have the very same scene set up as you have but I have no functionality on the expression pedals and i want to use them. Also, how have you triggered each scene to turn on and off using the footswitch? I can only turn on a scene but when I press again it doesn't turn it off (blackout).

For those of you wanting to program the FCB1010: There are a lot of how-to videos here, but it's not an easy task. You'll want to write down the steps - that will help you understand how it works. I'll detail the general steps needed for the Obey controller here, but you'll need to read the manual or watch a different video to get the specifics of programming the pedal. You simply need to program Only the MIDI Notes - do not turn on the CC and PC functions (listed in the manual as CNT and PRG CHG - turn them off if they're already on). Set each preset to a different MIDI Note. Most people will want to program it something like this: Select bank '00' with the up/down switches, then select preset 1 by hitting the '1' switch. Program it to send MIDI note '00'. Program the next switch ('2') to send MIDI note '01', and so on. If you need more than 10 presets (scenes), just hit the 'UP' switch, moving to bank '01', and program the next MIDI note into the first switch. (Sorry, but the actual programming is way too complicated to describe here. Other videos cover it well.) Now program the Obey scenes, starting with scene 1, bank 1. This will be selected by foot switch 1, bank 0 on the FCB. Scene 2 of bank 1 will be selected by foot switch 2, and so on... The stock FCB cannot, to the best of my knowledge, toggle between a scene and blackout with one switch, as seen in this video (How does he do it?). You can modify it to do so (***see below), but it's not easy or quick. It also gets complicated if you don't toggle blackout a few times, because the next time you hit that switch, it will blackout, and you'll have to hit it again to get the scene. I really recommend just setting one switch (maybe the same one for each bank?) to MIDI note 126, which is the Blackout command. Since Obey banks have eight scenes (1-8), you could set switch 10 (labelled '10/0') to Blackout, leave 9 blank, and then the banks will kind of match up with the Obey's 8 scenes per bank. If you want to use the FCB1010 for more complicated things, I would strongly recommend using the FCB/UNO Control Center software (Google will find it) to program it. You'll need a good MIDI interface (many of the really cheap ones don't work), so along with $20 US for the software, you'll spend up to $100 total to get it all working, but it is SO easy once set up. ***This excellent software was written to use with the firmware upgrade sold on the same site, but it also works with the stock FCB1010. The UnO firmware adds many great features to the FCB1010, including the Toggle feature mentioned above. If you decide to go this route, there is a support forum in Yahoo Groups that can help you get going.

So after watching this video, (Thanks Derek and Tom Jividen) I made this work for my setup and here it is if it helps anyone else. I'm using the FCB1010 to control the Obey 40 D-FI model DMX controller. I'm also using the FCB1010 to control on/off effects on the Midas M32 and triggering different scenes during live show, and controlling the Roland SPD-SX. as a side note, why is it we bass players have to do all this heavy lifting for the band? Anyways.. From your video: 1. Midi ADD button: All this does is tell the Obey unit what MIDI channel to listen on. There are 1-16 MIDI channels the OBEY will listen on..and the FCB can send on all or just one of them. I can't stess this enough YOU CAN ONLY TRIGGER SCENE OR CHASE CHANGES ON THE OBEY BY SENDING MIDI NOTES TO IT FROM THE FCB1010. By default the FCB1010 does not send MIDI notes to anything. You have to program it do do this. Here's how I did it: I set the FCB1010 to send MIDI notes through MIDI channel 2 and set the Obey to Midi channel 16 using the MIDI ADD button on Obey unit. The Obey is only listening for MIDI notes anyway, not to be confusing, but I use other channels for other things on other devices so that's why it's on channel 16. You can program the FCB1010 to send MIDI notes ONLY on any channel, in my case channel 16. If you are unsure how to set the notes up on the FCB1010 is in the manual section 2.4.6 PROGRAMMING THE NOTE FUNCTION. If you are unsure how to set the channels for specific midi functions is section 2.2.2 MIDI CHANNEL SETTINGS. Here's the thing with the Obey, it's manual says you can trigger a scene or a chase with a specific MIDI notes, but the numbering it shows is wrong. Bank 1 Scene 1 is MIDI note 0, then multiples of 8 so Bank 1 Scene 2 is 8, Bank 1 Scene 3 is 16 ...etc... Bank 2 Scene 1 is MIDI note 1, Bank 2 Scene 2 is 9....etc..etc.. I'm not experienced enough to know if this will work for everyone's setup. I know it just works on mine. Not real clear on the inter workings of the MIDI protocol but I wanted to pass this along before I forget how to do it. I'm a shining example of "set it and forget it". The videos Tom mentioned are must watch TV for this stuff, also the programs mentioned in the videos are mandatory downloading if you want to get all the banks and scenes and chases set up on the FCB1010 quickly. You also need the Roland UM-One or something to interface with your computer. Another mandatory program is called MIDI-OX2 that shows exactly what the FCB1010 is outputting. I'm not using the expression pedals on the FCB1010 for the lights, I made a chase with a bunch of scenes for a fade. Don't know if that would work with the Obey. Sorry.

Hey Clayton, you totally got me going in the right direction BUT I can't get my FCB1010 to set pedal #1 to midi note "00." Every time I confirm by hitting "up" it reverts to 01. So my midi notes are off. So my secondary problem is pedal (Midi note 01)one activates Bank 0 Scene #2 and every other pedal, no matter what midi note it's set too activates Bank 0 Scene #1. Can't figure this one out on my own! Any insight?

Hey man. Thanks for making the vid. I play bass too and instead of having the foot pedal I just program the scenes and use the auto play function with each bank being a different song. The only draw backs are that the scenes auto play in order and I do have to control the fader speed a bit and change the bank each song by hand. Pretty to get a routine down though.

FYI. my bass player runs a volume pedal. from the headphone out (full blast) from the board > vol. pedal in >the DMX unit and has the sound activation turned on so that he can control the chases with the pedal.

this is awesome bro! question, is there a way to connect this directly to laptop and control dmx lighting software? again, thanks for your video. right now I can trigger scenes from my keyboard/piano, but wondering if I could use this foot controller instead..

John Eli Gonzalez Hi john.. There are lots of different ways to control your lights via dmx from a laptop. I have zero experience doing so, But I have heard Chauvet Showxpress is very easy to figure out and it is a nice product. But like I said I have no experience with this.. I am however wanting to try Showxpress for myself sometime... As far as running your lights with a foot controller instead of your keyboard, you should be able to plug the Behringer fcb1010 right in and have it work.?.?. I have had zero issues with my setup showing in the video, It was as simple as sliced bread... There have been some people commenting about this setup not being as easy as what I had it.?.?.?So it makes me wonder? I don't know what more to tell you other than good luck bud... Follow my video, keep your fingers crossed and hope that it works... If you have some success with this, Myself and everyone else would love to hear about it.. let us know man... Thank you for watching...

I appreciate your comments bro. definitely will try the behringer foot controller. right now, when we're playing live, it works because i'm playing the piano and trigger the different scenes from my area, but if you're walking around, during live performance, you're having to return back to the piano area, and I think the midi foot control would make things look better..anyhow, i'll give it a shot and load some videos!

Hi. Another great way to go with DMX is DMXIS software. You can programme all your banks and scenes on the laptop and then step through the banks and scenes with a Boss footswitch. LearnStageLighting.com is a good place to find out about this. It worked a treat for our band...

Is there a possibility to store your programmed scenes (whether you did this with a software on a pc or with a dmx console/controler), and then transfert your scenes a usb key, and while you're on show, plug this key in a footswich or midi controler that allows it ? And then the footswich will trigger your lights stuff ?

@@oldschoolgeek4199 I haven’t heard of anything like that (but I’m certainly not an expert!). There is a thing called Eurolite Bigfoot. It’s built like a tank and you can store I think it was 16 scenes in it. I had one, but didn’t have anything like the capacity of DMXIS. DMXIS isn’t pro, but it’s very easy to learn / use and you can get great results. At least way beyond the sort of sound to light set ups most bar bands use. I have a Panasonic Toughbook which cost me a couple of hundred used. It’s beer proof and sits in a flight case with my bass guitar fx pedals. Happily it means my pedal board is bigger than the guitarist’s 😂😂

Tom, I would love to know what you have figured out. My set up is still working like a dream, but it could always be better. I'm Very interested in what you might have?

How did you program the expression pedals??

sean tevlin Hey bud, I didn't do any programming. With my Fcb1010, the left expression pedal just Black's everything out when you press it. I didn't like having the left pedal there because with my big feet I would always accidentally hit it and black everything out. So I tore the pedal apart and removed the left pedal, leaving only the right expression pedal. The pedal on the right makes the lights flash and go crazy, I use it quite often. Like I said I just plugged it in and that's how it works... One of these days I'll set up a camera of my band to demonstrate the light show via using the pedal... Let me know if your fcb1010 does something different than mine. I'd be interested to find out.. Thanks Sean

Derek Johnson yeah my expression pedals don't do anything. Ive tried to program them as all instructions state and they don't do anything. Ive heard people just plug the fcb in and everything already works. I had to set up each button. I'm good for scenes now but I really need that expression pedal to work. Lol

sean tevlin Damn Dude I wish I had a solution... These things seem to have a mind of there own... I wonder if It just works with certain lights? There are a few of my light that do not do anything with the expression pedal. For example my Chauvet Geysers and ADJ sweeper beams do nothing with the expression pedals. However all my par cans and Intimidators react to the expression pedals... The light in my video is a Chauvet 4 bar, It changes to blue when I press the expression pedals and they flash all crazy when rocking the pedal... All I can guess is that it is reacting to the way I have my scenes programed.. At my next show, I'm going to dig into this and see if I can figure something out. I'd really like to know. I'll get back to you if I find a solution... in the meantime Good Luck man... \III/

sean tevlin Any luck on programming the expression pedals? Can't seem to get those to work. Really wish one of mine would blackout! Also, I can't get my scenes to blackout by pressing the same button that is already lit on the fcb. Won't work like a stomp box, on/off. Any help from someone would be awesome! Thanks!

No. I haven't gotten them to work yet. I've emailed Behringer and they emailed me back some steps to try to get it to work. I just haven't had the chance to work on it yet. I will post something once I check it ou.
