Chawnglaizawn is a folk dance of the Mizoram state of India. It is performed by the Pawi communityon dual occasions. Interestingly, both the dances have a diametrically opposite mood. This dance is an integral part of their culture and traditions.
Performance of Chawnglaizawn Chawnglaizawn is performed on two different occasions. In the first occasion, a husband to mourn the death of his spouse performs this dance. He has to perform this dance till he becomes exhausted. Thereafter, his friends and relatives would dance on his behalf. This shows their mourning too.
The second occasion is drastically different from the first one. In the second situation, it is performed on festivals as well as to celebrate the prize received for good hunting. During such occasions, the dance is performed in large groups. Both boys and girls dance to the drum’s beat. Shawls are also used in order to facilitate the movement of arms. However in terms of musical instruments, only drums are used in this dance.
