+Michael Heathman, The ball was foul? Why do you think that, because some off angle camera made it look like it was foul for a period of time before it made it look like it was fair. Stop going off that camera because it isn't conclusive. Hence the reason they called it inconclusive. That being said lets talk about where the Crew messed up. Well, for starters, the 3rd base ump who had next to no angle, over ruled the 1st base ump who had the best angle. Then from there they didn't even want to review it (something they should have done before ever overturning it). No, this crew chief did not do a great job. In fact they did a horrible job. So what do people want these umpires to do. Well, first off is use common sense, take the opinion of the guy who had the best angle. 2nd off they need to go by a normal procedure and review the call before overturning it.

I think I read several comments as "OK, the call initially was a home run, but the umpires huddled and the call was overturned." What apparently upset some people is that the umpires talked it over, got it right, but they didn't consult reply to do it? Oh, the humanity. The umps got the call right, but because they didn't phone home first that's bad? Yikes!
@Kartkid024
@Kartkid024 6 лет назад
What made people mad was that the Umpires only got together after the Pirates Coach asked for a review, then it was the 3rd base umpire who overturned it and that ended up deciding the call. There is no knowing if they got it right or not. Joe even said it at the end though, it was ruled inconclusive, had they had a replay that showed it was conclusive then what ever, but to have a 3rd base umpire (no way you can tell me he had the better look if any conclusive look over the 1st base and home plate umpires) overturn the call without reviewing it and ultimately deciding the call, that is just not the right way to do it. In the end it may have been foul it may have not, but these umpires completely screwed up the process here.

@LucasDidier22
@LucasDidier22 7 лет назад
For all you saying that they made the right call, that isn't what the Cubs were arguing. They were arguing the fact that they overturned it without a replay, which is unacceptable in this situation. The guy with the best view of anyone on the field, the first base umpire, called it a homerun. Only a replay should be able to overrule him.
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 5 лет назад
It is totally acceptable for the crew to get together and get the opinions of other umpires. The crew did the right thing and got the call correct.
@LucasDidier22
@LucasDidier22 5 лет назад
@@alanhess9306 Why would they do that instead of replay though? Surely if they just discuss it on the field and actually overturn, it will be immediately followed by a replay challenge, like it did here. So just go to replay where you have better angles and slow motion.

The foul pole is there to help in the call because you can see the ball hit the pole if it's fair. The problem here is that he crushed that ball so high over the pole that the first base umpire had to make a judgment call as to when the ball left the field.

Taft Gardner, the third base umpire has a better angle to see daylight between the pole and the ball. Also, no umpire has the authority to overrule another umpire's call. The crew got together and at least one umpire was certain it was foul. THe crew agreed and ultimately the correct call was made.

@LucasDidier22
@LucasDidier22 5 лет назад
@@alanhess9306 Why would the umps just get together before going to replay? There is no possible way that replay would be less conclusive on that play than the umps' view in real time. But by changing it with a get together on the field, that now means that in the case of an inconclusive replay, the default call has now changed. In this case, the umps turned out to be correct, but I still don't believe it should have been handled that way. Two guys were closer to the play and had a view directly down the line. They called it a Home Run. The 3rd base ump should not overrule them on that play. Just go to replay immediately and there would be far less controversy over this play.

@@alanhess9306 but given the fact that he's the farthest from the play, telling them what he saw shouldn't effect the call imo. Do they normally let players run all the bases after the hit on a "foul ball"?

Stephen Lawrence no he thought it was a home run so he rounded the bases but they called it fouled

Joe's definitely right. How do they reverse a call they made on the field without looking at it?

@@alanhess9306 please pay attention. the umpires changed the call before they reviewed it. did you watch the video?
@alanhess9306
@alanhess9306 4 года назад
@@bv6377 Sure they changed the call before it was reviewed, but that is not unusual. If an umpire is not completely certain of his call, the umpires often get together and exchange information to get the call right. if another umpire is certain the call is wrong, they can change it. I suppose the original poster thought they couldn't change it without reviewing it. He is wrong.

That was foul
@Kartkid024

Based off what? Hopefully you don't say based off the off angled camera that showed foul at one point and fair as it fell, because that would be silly and the same reason the MLB called it inconclusive. I'm sure that wasn't the reason. I'm sure you have a legit reason to believe it as foul. So I'll let you supply your reasoning that allowed you to conclude something the MLB couldn't. You are up......

Kartkid024 Learn baseball! The ball was to the right of the foul pole = foul. It makes absolutely no difference where the ball lands
@Kartkid024
@Kartkid024 7 лет назад
I know the rules, I think you misunderstood the argument. The Camera isn't aligned with the foul pole so there is no way to tell if the ball is actually foul or not. It might just look foul. You can't tell for sure based off this angle. The call was inconclusive and that is a fair argument. The replay wasn't the reason for all the controversy. What Maddon and everyone else was upset about was how the umpires handled this situation. The 1st base and home umpire called it a fair ball. It was Jeff Kellogg who was the Crew Chief, who overturned the call from 3rd base. Seriously, the 3rd base ump thought he had a better angle over the 1st base and home plate umpire and overturned the call with out even trying to review it. Just made the decision to overturn it on his own. Any manager would have rightfully been upset.

Kartkid024 , Look at the 1:36 mark where the ball disappears behind the foul pole. Definitely foul.

Levi Mattison ~ They were uniforms celebrating old Negro Baseball Leagues. As a Steelers fan, those bumblebee throwbacks are pretty ugly.

Reading Maddons lips he’s not upset that they called it foul, he’s upset that they called it foul so late after Rizzo had already made his way around the bases. Call it fare of foul right away. It should have been Pittsburgh using their challenge, not Chicago. With the confusion they probably weren’t able to get a good look at it from Chicago’s side and they used a challenge when they shouldn’t have and that pissed Maddon off

This is why the Akron Lelands and the Little Rock Grays are no longer in MLB. Every game between these two it was always the same ole thing. Arguing and complaining. MLB had enough of it and kicked them both out of the league.
