Fished the Cheakamus River in Whistler - just opposite Function Junction. Met two couples at the parking lot and caught up to them on the hike. Right off we see some bear poop that was from the same day (not really sure how fresh it was). It was a 3km hike to the lake, I took a detour at about 1.5K to head down to the river (the first bridge) - but the river was roaring and no real place to drop down and fish it. I headed back up and hiked the 1.5km to the lake. Right at the mouth of the lake into the river I dropped down and tried fishing - such a pretty spot - but no fish. I moved up (a couple times) and saw some fish - they were deep and chasing each other off. I couldn't fish to them. Huge trees down along the edges of the lake/river, you could walk on them like highways - some were 3 feet around and a hundred feet long. I saw a family of ducks that must have been divers - they would disappear for like 10 seconds and then all pop up and the babies would swim like crazy for the mom and dad duck - pretty cool. And yes, I found a lucky (?) US penny on a downed tree in the middle of Cheakamus Lake! Completely random and crazy. Water was crystal clear - the hike was amazing - no bears, huge cedars, beautiful area and lake.
I tried another river below Alta Lake (I think it was 20 mile creek) - it looked promising. After hiking in off the road, the water was roaring, cold and crystal clear - not much bug life under the rocks. I hike across the road to the other side and you can see it was an old mountain biking park/trail that has been left for dead and abandoned. Huge trees downed in the river caused some cool pools. That last tree I walk across was 4 feet wide and long - I walked down it to fish a couple holes. Unfortunately no fish were found or caught - but still a great hike and a great time in BC Canada. Sometimes it isn't about the fish, it's about the experience!
