Cheap 300W workbench variable power supply. Can it deliver and charge lithium batteries?

I ordered a new upgrade for my workbench, a new variable power supply 0-60V, 5A. It can do CC and CV and is perfect for charging all kind of batteries. It seems like a good unit but the knobs are terrible and setting the voltage correctly is a bit fiddly (at least at the beginning).

Hi Andy, I watched the previous video, I was very thorough, I have to admit I looked for the "includes paid for content" banner but there was none, so knowing you, I trusted your integrity and knew it wasn't, you were just doing a detailed experience/review, I will add however if you were given the item for free it would be best to let people know this to be completely transparent, as getting something without paying for it can be seen as being a sponsored review as you got something without paying. Just my point of view, I always enjoy your content, and can tell the work you put into them, quite a bit of editing too. All the best from UK 👍

one thing you need to learn, for your own health and sanity, you need to learn how to ignore comments like that, talking as a streamer who have to deal with that live. 99% don't understand the rules about doing paid promotions and the consequences if you do without disclosure. With these modern supplies, you are supposed to set your constant voltage level with no load and set you constant current level with the leads shorted together. This approach simplifies your setup a little.

In my mind… if you got it for free… then that means you got paid in merchandise instead of cash so at the end of the day you still got paid! Just saying!!

Yes, its not only in your mind its part of the RU-vid agreement. If you get something for free from a company, you have to check a box as a "paid promotion" even tho you dont, or didnt get paid. The product is considered "payment". It also depends on your location.

Yeah I get that all the time. No matter how much you bash an item, or like it, people still think someone is paying you. Even if I buy something with my own money, and there is no affiliate program, and I end up liking it, people still think someone is paying me. Drives me crazy. You still have to disclose that you got the device for free. FTC rules state this actually. I list this in all my videos and I tell people every single detail.

I would recommend getting a power supply with an enable output button. You don't have to adjust the voltage and current with the load connected. There exists a 60V 5A version with those features.
@michaelbouckley4455
@michaelbouckley4455 3 года назад
Often these units allow shorting the wires to set the current, before applying to load
@kuhrd
@kuhrd 3 года назад
Those power supplies are cheap and built to the price but they definitely get the job done. I have a few (10) I ordered for the school I teach at for the electronics class and the first thing I had the class do was take them apart and replace the output terminals and also add 10 turn pots to replace the course knobs. We swapped out the volt and amp meters with 5 digit ones. We also beefed up the wire going from the circuit board to the output terminal to prevent voltage drop and they are now really decent units and you would not even be able to tell that they were modified other than by using them since we used green voltmeters and the 10 turn pots making the fine adjustment kinda pointless.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 года назад
Thanks for sharing. These are good suggestions and I'll look into this. It's not hard to improve these things. Why did you go 5 digit with the meters? Do you need that accuracy?
@kuhrd
@kuhrd 3 года назад
@@OffGridGarageAustralia It made adjustments easier to see without a meter connected when you upgrade the unit to a 10 turn potentiometer. In the electronics class the students build a lot of circuits that need a fairly accurate voltage reference to help prove that the math works when they are starting out and are new to electronics. It also comes in handy when you need to diagnose voltage or current fluxuations coming from the power input side of the circuit without hooking up an oscilliscope since the 5 digit meters were a bit more sensative to fluctuations.

Great video! I've enjoyed watching and learning for some time. I have a similar 60V/5A ps. ($90 on Amazon) and yep, its tiny just like yours. If I may though...my understanding was, you first set the Amps by powering up and shorting the leads, then dial in your target Amps while the volts are turned low(3-5V) then turn off the unit, un-short, then turn on and ramp up to your desired volts, then attach your load. (In this case a batt) I'm remembering somewhere that said once you set your target V and A, it's not a good idea to adjust the Amps while the load (batt) is attached. I may be remembering it wrong, but I recall it was a big no no, especially for battery charging. I humbly stand corrected if in fact, this is mis-information and a non issue. Again, love watching and learning along with you!

I have a very similar (60V, 5A) power supply, but mine is TopPower branded here in the U.K. Looks the same as yours, and a similar price too. Whilst it will do just over 60V, and just over 5A, it won’t do both at the same time. I occasionally use mine to test Victron MPPT charge controllers (simulating a solar panel output, especially if working at night) and the limit really is 300w, and not a watt more. It shuts down if over that combined V/A limit. Great bit of kit IMO. Ignore the trolls, they need to learn that there is an off button and alternative content that meets their narrow minded opinions. An opinion is just that, and yours has been shown over time to be fair and reasonable.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 года назад
Thank you Ian. I found the same with mine yesterday when charging tha battery. If I go to high with the amps at 60V it lilits the power output. It was runnig stable at 4.35A though. That's good eneough for me. I didn't know you can test MPPTs with that. I was always under the impression they don't like to be connected to a power supply as they cannot track a max power point.
@theonlywoody2shoes
@theonlywoody2shoes 3 года назад
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Thanks for the reply. I too was initially sceptical about using the power supply as an input to an MPPT solar charge controller; and whilst it does wildly swing the voltage and current on first powering things up, it soon settles down to alternating between constant voltage and constant current a few times per second with minimal changes in each of the values - it’s actually an interesting insight into how the MPPT “seeks out” the best power point with a “constant” input from a bench power supply. Sadly a lot of my solar experimenting takes place in the evenings, so by the time I get to play there is no sun left on my panels, hence discovering this alternate use for a bench power supply.

Thumbs up for your videos. I have one similar DC power supply but for range 0-30V and 0-10A. It's a very basic power supply and yes the adjustment of volt and ampere is a bit of a little hassle. The most negative issue I have with the power supply is that the display or the build in voltmeter is not reliable. I get different values (Volt) from DC power supply and my new UNI-T multimeter measuring instrument.

This looks like an amazing product. I wish they'd put the actual power output on products, rather than saying up to 1.5kw. So bad. If anything it should output more. 1.6-1.7kwh to make up for power losses. We bought AGM batteries at 26.4Kwh. That's more than enough for us but in reality you can only use 40-50%. So that's 10-14Kwh at fully charged. Then it's not enough.

I didn't watch the Bluetti video because I have already been it in other videos and it's not for me! The Lab Power Supply though, I have a 30V 10A model which can't deliver 10A at 30V! I have looked at high voltage Power Supplies but I don't want to get one that can't deliver the full 5A at 60V. I would have liked to see if your one can do it? I have seen some that can...
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 года назад
Thanks, Peter. Didn't I show this i the video? Or maybe it was i the next video coming soon. Mine can handle 61.5V and 5.15A. Had it running for over 1h yesterday and charged the big battery with it. Fan comes on to cool and no voltage drift even under full power.
@PeterMilanovski
@PeterMilanovski 3 года назад
@@OffGridGarageAustralia that's excellent! Mine has a proper transformer in it but struggles to deliver maximum power! You can have one or the other but not both, your one looks like it's powered by a Switch Mode Power Supply, it looked like it was pretty light weight in the video! But it's great to know that full power can be delivered... I need two of them to get +-60V rail's to power amplifiers under development... 10A total between two would have been better if they were 10A each or more but for the money, can't really complain, no one listens LoL.

You probably could but would have the load of this resistor all the time. It's not too bad after using it for a few days...

Had the same model, started randomly jumping up/down up to 0.3V after a year, got worse over time, like the potentiometers weren't making a solid connection. Not ideal for Lithium charging

Same experience here. The adjustments are analog rather than an indexing digital type and they will always drift. This unit can be upgraded to digital potentiometers.
@sreekumarUSA

061921/1452h PST 🇺🇸. These units are reliable. The erratic behavior of potentiometer may be due to minute dirt particles on carbon track. All you got to do is spray WD40 through the opening of the potentiometer and swirl the spindle a few times. The fine control is tricky, though. You could also replace the carbon potentiometer with wire wound units of the same value, if possible. Best wishes and 73s…

Hey, nice video. I was wondering if you have an idea for my situation. I have a shop where I do electrical work on vehicles. Now from time to time the vehicle battery will drain because I work on it for more than a day or so. So I'm looking for a 12v power supply where I can hook up the vehicle so they never drain while working on them. I might as well use some of the power supply to power some probetesters around the shop. Since it's all under the same circuit. I'm not looking though to set rules each and every time I hook up the vehicle. I want it to be a quick thing. On & off. Technically I'm not even charging the battery I'm just maintaining a 12 volt flow. Please let me know if you have any ideas what I can do. Thanks 🙏🏻

Hey Andy! Been watching awhile, you convinced me to explore your area of the country (I'm from Brisbane), certainly happy I did do, you live in a great area! Thanks for the video, super helpful since I was looking at a power unit recently! Now I really want a supply with a numeric input rather than potentiometers, I really thought they should be rotary encoders if that's the only interface.. Two unrelated questions for you though: 1) what's your background training /apprenticship? I agree that your life qualifications shouldn't impact your DIY'ness though! But it certainly makes me curious, as I'm sure we both understand the.. Uh.. limitations QLD/Aus place on us performing DIY work compared to other countries such as UK/NZ/USA 2) not a question, but I'd love to watch your other channels - feel like doing some cross promotion? You might have it linked somewhere, but watching through the TV primarily doesn't make spotting links super easy :)

Thank you very much. I had the keypad pwoer supply in my shopping basket but really wanted something simple to use, quickl and easy not to push too many buttons all the time to change settings. I love that they can be connected to a PC but I chose to go with the simple power supply. After using it for a few days now, it's pretty good once you get the hang how to operate it 1.) I'm an electrician and electronics specialist but worked most of my life with computers 2.) Hers ia link to all my other channels. Only one is in English though ru-vid.comchannels

Meh don't take it personal. Fyi though , if you receive the product for free you're still meant to tick the box which will add the paid promotion warning. Have a read of it next time you upload, it says something like if you recieved payment , a product or item of value . So receiving a free sample in RU-vids eyes is the same thing. Not sure what they do if they realize you haven't ticked it

Hi, I need some advice. I just bought a Power Supply Kococater SPPS-S605: 60V - 5Am, pretty similar to the on the video. Firstable I am not an engineer but I am trying to emule a device with this PS. I want to use from 1 to 50V and from 1 to 35mA. I tried and set up to 20V and 5mA, but when it was used, the display showed: V:4.8 (it was moving but just reached 5V, and the Amper value did not move, it stayed on 5mA, this is the value I wanted). Here comes my question: What should I do and order to get this measurements: from 1 to 50V and from 1 to 35mA (I need to hold the voltage without changing the miliampers). Thanks.
@john_in_phoenix
@john_in_phoenix 3 года назад
Don't trust the display on the power supply, always set the voltage using your meter, then connect it to the battery and turn up the current. Wanptek actually manufactures many other brands that just stick their name on the box. My testing has found them to be well worth the money. Forgot to add, ignore comments you don't like, life is too short to get upset by trolls.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 3 года назад
Thank you John. It seems to be fairly accurate, I checked both volt and amps a few times and it was matching with the multimeter. Had it running for over 1h yesterday at 60V and 5A and it didn't drift at all. The fan came on a few times but overall it delivered...

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia Год назад
A 14.6V charger is not suitable for that. That would mean the cells have all 3.65V precisely. As this is never the case, the BMS will protect the battery and switch off your charger. Get one with 13.8V to charge your battery. To top balance, you may want to put all cells in parallel and charge them 3.6V.
