It broke because he used it wrong. That type of expander has to be fully inserted into the pipe. If it's only partially inserted, like he did, the stress of expansion is concentrated on the center of the steel bars. They are not designed for that, and they will break. If it's inserted all the way in, the stress will be on the round internal pushers, and it will work fine.

@Saxson Jackman, I agree on the Lisle Pipe Stretcher Kit is really good as it can be used with an impact wrench to quickly stretch pipes. Collet sets expand pipes from 1-5/8 in. to 4-1/4 in. Turn 1-1/8 in. bolt with a 1/2 in. or 3/4 in it is sold at Home Depot for $153.88

Looks like it was damaged because u were using it on compromised pipe to begin with. The pipe had a severe ridge in it from the previous u-bolt, so when U applied pressure from the tool to expand it was all concentrated on the u-bolt ridge damaging the tool. Guarantee if u had used it on pipe that was round and not damaged it would have applied even pressure and worked fine.

You are correct, the tool did not expand the entire pipe just the part where the U clamps was.

Key thing with it is to fully insert it, as you see most them snap in the middle if you leave it partially out the end of the pipe, and i find impact wrenches are to much torque at once for them.....
@Lethalwar
@Lethalwar 3 года назад
used one today and used a wrench and wprked fine. Impact is taking it to far where you are ruining it. i believe big one goes up to 3 1/2 not 4" so you go until the exhaust slides in.
@6x9wizard
@6x9wizard 9 месяцев назад
I'm pretty sure you must put the whole tool into the pipe. Not just to the second o ring, next would be grease it up, to allow easier slip. And last, heat the pipe. Unfortunately the oring will melt so that becomes a replacement part. I'm surprised they don't have a steel wound ring spring so that it can take the heet. I'm also surprised that they don't use an acme thread as it has greater lateral streagth

That tool failed because it was not inserted all the way into the pipe. The Snap-on one will allow you to insert only a portion of it into the pipe the way you did.
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway 4 года назад
CC&Z Shouldn’t have to insert it all the way just because it’s not Snap-On. You should be able to use the tool in the same manner regardless who makes it, but your right about the quality of the material Snap-On’s Exhaust Expander is made of. I used my former Chrysler Foreman’s quite a bit when I worked with him at the dealership & that was a Bluepoint Expander and I used it in the same manner. No issues.

@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway 4 года назад
Theramsey3 not true. Snap-on makes this same kit. You not supposed to go passed the neck so being 3/4 of the way in is normal & it can be used with an impact. I’ve done it time and time again. The threads held up fine. It was the cheap metal flats that broke.
@The1Ramsey3
@The1Ramsey3 4 года назад
@@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway so you are saying that that cheap tool you broke was made by snap on? You are comparing apples to oranges. They taste different because they are made to a different price point. The chinesieum of the one you broke needed to be fully inserted into the pipe and have hand tools used. It is a metal quality and heat treating issue. I agree if you HAD used a snap on in this manner it would not have failed in this manner because it is rated for what you did to the Chinese tool that was not rated for what you did to it. If I am wrong about your cheap tool being impact rated or rated to only be inserted 3/4 of the way into the pipe please provide me with a link or documentation, I will gladly admit I was wrong and apologize appropriately.

It’s because as far I saw how it is design, you’re using it wrong, the all tool should be inside when U try to expand the pipe, if half of the tool is inside , the part inside will expand less than the one outside because of the restriction, and then finally break ! I tried mysielf with the all tool inside and it never broke.

Weld that sucker in. Yeah those expanders aren’t the greatest. I have the lisle 17350 kit along with harbor freight 10ton hydraulic pump with knockouts. The ram bolt threads right into the lisle kit. What you have to do is put the expander in stretch the pipe a little and than rotate and expand a little more to get it to size and round.

No grease. Using an impact on something that shouldn't be impacted. Lastly, you're trying to straighten out a crease which will certainly cause it to fail, if you'd have not put the weakest point of the tool at that crease it'd have held up a lot better.

Those suck! They only attempt to make a tube round again, and if you put real power to them, they break as demonstrated. The Lisle exhaust expander #34400 actually works, it has a slower ramp rate & you need extender collets for different size pipes... But this tool will actually stretch the pipe, with a little practice you can make nice slip joints... You can buy a set that will work with tubes up to 4.25" They also make proper tools to make the tube round again for clamping #32509 & #32750. (What you did here) Less throw-away tools.

Heat the pipe with oxy or a heat gun. Lubricate with wd-40 or rubber grease, Not moly as it will eventually deteriorate the o rings. Doing 3 turns and rotate, rinse and repeat till you reach the size. Make sure over 50% of the tool is inside at all times. You didn't rotate the tool and over tightened it. Tool works fine.
