I am here because I am trying to learn about growing microgreens so please don't roast me for the questions. I know farmers that sprout and grow some of these same seeds to feed their animals some nutrient dense feed called fodder to help replace their natural browsing of fresh greens during winter months. They grow their fodder in these same 10x20 trays using some of the common microgreen seeds I have seen in videos like wheat and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and occasionally some other seeds I haven't seen in microgreen videos like barley and oats My point is that when they grow their fodder they don't bother with using any sort of lighting or growing material like coco or potting soil, they just dump soaked seeds into a sterile tray and they keep them watered in trays with drainage holes. The seeds sprout and just grow a big ol' mat of roots that all tangle together into one solid sheet and the farmers just fling the entire edible mass of greens, roots, and all at their animals for disposal. My question is: If they can do it without lights and growing material, why can't we? What's the real pros/cons for the different setups?
@LilRofl
@LilRofl 3 года назад
Where I live, covers are required for lights to pass inspection so if a light breaks it doesn't contaminate your crop. Also, I think I would repurpose the water from the dehumidifier for nutrients. Nice system overview; thanks!

Thanks for the video, Curtis. I'm trying to figure out which lights to use. In his book Mini Farming, Self-Suffieciency on 1/4 Acre, Brett Markham says he uses one cool and one warm bulb on a double fluorescent ballast to inexpensively emit the blue and red ranges of the spectrum and gets good results at what was then (2010) 1/6 of the price of specialized agricultural lights. This sounds interesting in the spirit of the 80-20 rule, but I need to research three things: 1) Current price of bulbs, light fixtures, and electricity to operate LEDs vs. fluorescents. (Apparently LEDs have dropped in relative price since 2010.) 2) Lifespan of LEDs vs. fluorescents. This would yield a truer cost per year of operation. 3: Whether Markham has changed his lighting system in the 14 years since his book was published.

I'm so much happier growing sprouts. I'm trying to get a little bit into microgreens but Sprouts have spoiled me. I'm growing 42 trays hydroponic sprouts a week and I could double that each week if I wanted to it takes me about 6 hours to harvest 42 trays of sprouts and have the growing containers and trays cleaned up and sanitized by the time I'm done. This is enough to fill up three refrigerators with 14 to 16 quart plastic containers with lids. I get a minimum of $20 per tray as well. Harvesting from me is simply rolling a thick tray of greened sprouts into a container of water, dehull using a hose with spray gun and salad spin using a 5 gallon hand power spinner. 2 trays fills up one 14 qt dollar store Bella box and averages to about 5 lbs. I'm charging 10 a lb wholesale. My shelf life averages 2 to 3 weeks. I'd rather just grow pea shoots and juice them at the farmers market and make $3 a cup of juice combining what greens I grow including Sprouts and mixing it with premade apple, lemon, and Ginger juice to sweeten it. It's funny watching this video because I never see anyone talk about Sprouts the same way. Maybe I'll be the first one on RU-vid doing it

Currently thinking I can give up to a 6' x 10' space over to growing foodin my apartment by the window. If anybody wants powerful, affordable lights for nursery or indoor hydro, look into HLG quantum board kits. There are others like Spyder that assemble these, but HLG are the best value. The Samsung 301 series horticulture diodes are what is required for a "quantum board". They have the best J/W rating of any diode on the market in 2019.

An alternative to Botanicare Trays is Duralastics. Duralastics identifies their trays by inside dimensions, 24 x 48 id and 36 x 72 id. You will need to reduce the outer dimensions of your paperpot germination trays by 1/8 inch both directions or see if Duralastics can produce a 26 x 49 id tray to accomodate the paperpot trays.

In 2022, using 3 4ft 20w bulbs per rack, five shelves per rack, I would still estimate that setup at about 2000, but it would be even more efficient and profitable. That's assuming a cost of about 500 to 600 per rack to do it right. Each shelf having a 120mm fan like it should and so on.

Fluorescent is a great off-the-shelf option for lighting, but if you're looking to maximize efficiency I recommend checking out some DIY LED strip builds. It requires some electrical knowledge but you can use solderless fittings like Wagos for flexibility/easy changing of the lighting setup. LedGardener on RU-vid (has his own website too) does step by step guides to making your own LED grow lights. I built a true 490W (not a "490W equivalent" like some pre-built LED grow lights) LED strip array putting out 50,000+ lumens for about $375. You can also mix and match spectrums for max yield.

Why spend that much when microgreens need the bare minimum? Unless you can cut a 7 day grow to a 4 day grow with your setup it doesn't seem worth it unless you're growing something other than microgreens. Regular shop light leds are cheaper efficient for about $59 for an 8 pk.
