Cheap BMW 3 Series Door Pull Handle Restoration!

In this video I show you how to restore your drivers door handle on your E90 or E92 BMW. This works if you have a black interior and should be similar for other BMW models.
The rubberized coating applied at the factory on the drivers side door pull handle will peel over time. It can be quite the eye sore and unfortunately you cannot purchase that part separately. It comes along with a new door panel which could get quite costly.
In this video I show you how to remove all that coating and freshen up the look. I also remove it off the window switch plate to ensure it all matches.

Before I saw this video, I thought it was gunk buildup on mine. Used alcohol swabs and quickly noticed it was removing some kind of “interior dye” or something. So I just removed all of it with little alcohol wipes. No panel removal necessary. Bare plastic looks glossier than painted but looks great in comparison to the half worn situation I had!

If you ever end up selling this car you gotta charge like 20k for it or something... just link your channel in the listing. Basically a heavily modded/brand new car. Better than new. I have watched a ton of your vids but only thought to sub today. I have only done like 1/10 of the stuff on the channel but it has saved me tons of money and headaches. Cheers from atlanta!!

Boiling water ! i've done this myself, just pour boiling water or very hot direct from the kettle on the removed parts, the rubberised coating simply crinkles and can be brushed off with a stiff brush, I left mine unfinished.

Great video, didn't respray mine, ordered a new set of handle and windows switch, melted the plastic provided on handle and filled other holes with epoxy resin and screwed with screws that come in set with handle, and I have also put epoxy over the screws. So this will hold 100%, maybe even better than original. And looks perfect, also color is exact. Thanks for the gide video, best regards and keep up a good work 👍

@filipkozaric
@filipkozaric 2 года назад
@@bertelsenmedia2nd I have screwed the panel where you rest your arm, on the rest of the door panel ( the part that you have to drill the OEM plactic , and separate so that you can get to the handle ) and filled every hole with epoxy resin and then screwed with screw's that come in set with a handle. The screw's are classic for mdf or wood 1cm long and 4mm thick( but you can buy thicker, 5 or 6mm thick) and they have a washer welded to them. But you can just buy screw's and washer's separately and screw it like that. But the parts that you can melt plastic, melt it because it is the strogest bond. And fill the holes with jb weld or epoxy resin, and then put the screw's in.

Why you're asking because the BMW has officially finished with the quality built interior from the 2004 which is a e60 model for 5 series and e90 for tye 3 series... Just a pure cheap plastic ERA... E39 and the E46 backwards if you expect the REAL BMW.

Have similar problem with the passenger side door pull on an X3. Since it is only the inside of the door pull, do you think I could get away with just applying the rubbing alcohol to the back of the handle without deinstalling it? As it's not facing outwards, application of the plastic conditioner and wax wouldn't be as necessary, Would just have to be careful of leather on outside of pull and on the door, Thoughts? Thanks

To improve this video which is very good: 1.- There is a spare part for the handle. (Aliexpress...) 2.- The window control connector is NOT removed by simply pulling as it appears in the video. You have to pull a lever that exists in the middle of the connector. 3.-NEVER use a drill. Then when putting the screws of subjection it is possible that they remain short, use a cutter or similar to leave it flat.

Wow. Just wow. This video was VERY, VERY helpful. Now I know how NEVER to attempt to do this repair. JB Weld on a main support for the car door handle to close? I cannot see how that could possibly go wrong. Anyhoo, after watching this epic debacle, I took a butter knife(ok truth is I started with my fingernail) and began scraping all of that rubber shit off of that part of the handle on the door panel that deterioriates and won't come out without applying for an act of congress. It didn't do any damage to the plastic underneath(tan)however it's a different shade. I clean the area with alcohol and then vinyl prep two or three times. Painted with a few coats of ColorBond BMW Cream Beige vinyl spray paint and..done..in about an hour and twenty minutes.. and my door handle/panel still intact with it's irritating, yet effective German melted plastic assembly.

That soft touch rubber coat BMW uses is such a pain in the ass and a failure. Not sure why they keep using that garbage on their trim parts. On the back doors of our X5 the handles have a very thick coating of this stuff that turns gooey and comes off on your hands after X amount of years. I ended up replacing the front handle on the passenger side front but the rear ones I scraped all the rubber off using rubbing alcohol (and a knife) like you did then sanded them with 600 grit paper. The texture and feel was almost identical to the new front handle so I just left them in that condition and reinstalled. No one rides in the backs of our cars (kids are grown and gone) so its no big deal. Besides that, if you didn't know what I did to them you wouldn't know, they look identical to OEM replacements. LOL

I can't get my head around half of what you're doing. Alcohol to remove a baked-on coating? Clear plastic polish wiped on and wiped off to rejuvenate black trim pieces? And wax on a door panel, wtf? And then don't forget the heat gun, for whatever reason. Here's a tip. Scrub like hell and it looks great afterwards, it evens out all the pits in the coating. Or use a stripping chemical, actually remove the coating, and respray.
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY 5 лет назад
You could skip the Plastx and spray wax and heat gun and it'll probably even out of time. Otherwise it gets chalky and you'll see some whiteness to the plastic as the rubbing alcohol is pretty harsh on plastics.
