Cheap But Great Work Boots

Cheap boots or expensive boots? Recently I was asked by a viewer if it’s better to have one pair of great work boots like Whites, Nicks, or Wesco, or to have two cheap boots to rotate. It’s a great question because there are benefits to each - of course a great pair of custom boots should fit perfectly, be well constructed, and last several rebuilds.
On the other hand being able to change out your boots on a rotating schedule allows them to dry and reduce the chance for athletes foot, lets the foam (if there is any) recover, and gives you options depending on your job or location.The answer is probably different depending on what you do for a living, if your boots get soaked during the day with water or grease and oil, or maybe you’re a trim carpenter and mostly spend your days inside of nearly finished spaces. So I began looking at affordable boot options, of course this is another term which means different things for different people, so considering the custom boots are around $400-500 lets half that and only look at boots which are below $200.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

@Carl Murawski I have these boots for sometime, and I have to say that they have aged wonderfully. I personally put in Ecco leather insoles, as the insoles it had came with have been a little bit too uncomfortable. the quality of this company is astounding. I have used these for work, and for day hiking. I’ve really put these beauties through the paces, but I feel that it is time for a new pair. I watched this video in the hopes to see if the quality was still the same as I had hoped, and I was not disappointed. Thank you Carl, keep up the great work 😊

The Silverado boots look decent, but they must be on the same level as Thorogood or the Danner Bull Runs / Chippewa service boots / Justin work boots and Redwings model # 2233 / 2245 / 953. So there are some options to choose from at the $200 and under you just have to look around. I’m not sure of all the difference brands, but Midwest Boots is a good place to look. The Jim Greens are interesting boots especially for the price. Great review

Definitely a good place to shop. I've gone to Workboots.com in the past because they had some good sales, but their return policy sucks. Just bought a pair of pull on justin conductor's to potentially replace my lace up conductors that are starting to smell, but they're too big and since I removed the tag they cannot be returned or exchanged. I just went and gave them to my dad to try out. I'll be sticking with lace up boots going forward.

New subscriber, love the info. Just purchased a pair of Jim Green’s. I also recently purchased a pair of Chippewa boots... the ones that are all material sourced in America then shipped to Vietnam for assembly. Have worn the same model for over 10yrs and they were originally an all American boot with a best found price of $229. The new outsourced boot sells for $179! Honestly, the construction is as good if not better. The last 2 pair of American boots at $229 fell apart at the sole within 2 months. They were replaced free, but jeez. I’ve found the outsourced on sale for $149 occasionally, and it’s a great buy!!! 400gram thinsulate ultra, chippatex bootie (gore lost its patent...my brother manufactures gore-Tex and several generic named versions of the exact same material since before the patent date ran up. And a Goodyear welt with vibram soles. Even at $179...an excellent buy.

I wear Justin conductor's at work. Around $180, US made, and they just work for me. Could be better but not bad at all. I actually got mine for around $165 0n sale. The only reason I chose these is because I'm required all black footwear and wanted something traditional. If I was recommending boots to someone who's not restricted on color I'd recommend the Thorogood 814, but they're just over $200 shipped. The justin conductor's do come in a nice tobacco brown and are generally just a good boot for the money, especially if you like a round toe roper with a kiltie.

I'm sure they've already been mentioned in this thread, but I'd like to shout out the Thorogood moc toe. American made (with domestic and international parts) and union owned. Full grain oil tanned leather, available in 6" and 8" with and without a steel toe, some sort of electrical protection in the sole (I don't work with electricity so I don't fully know the specifics), and a 360° storm welt. Most of my job is just walking and kneeling on hard floors, and the combination of the cushy, supportive insole and shock absorbing wedge outsole is great for my feet. I got mine (6" soft toe) for $204 shipped from Midwest Boots (I don't think you can actually buy them from Thorogood's website), who offer free returns and exchanges as well. They're also mostly unlined, so I was able to wear them for a full work day right out of the box with minimal break in discomfort.

I like to be able to take them off with the greatest of ease and open them wide up so they can dry out and it’s much easier with one more row of speed hooks. Thank you. Just ordered a pair of silverado 8inch work boots (logger style) and couldn't find anything on them. Decided to take a gamble but you video makes me a lil more confident in knowing what kind of quality i may be receiving. Will update in a few weeks after i get them if anyone else is interested in those boots

You should try bull boxers. It’s a Dutch and Portugal boot company that makes nice high quality boots in a good price. But most of them are glued but I had a limited edition pair for a year and they still look good

I have Jim Green Razorbacks. The major cost cutting measure is the exchange rate. The USA dollar is worth more. That's where a bulk of the cost savings comes from. It's cheaper to make shoes in South Africa. The major dislike, for me, is that the shoes are double lasted using synthetic lasting board. Synthetic lasting boards crack and break apart. If a cobbler needs to take them apart, and rebuild the boot with actual pieces of leather, it will cost more than the retail price of the boots. Jim Green does pay online influencers for their reviews. You can see the "click here to buy" links. The reviewer gets paid a commission for every sale. But that's how business is done. Influencers need to get paid. It cost money to create content.

I wonder about the Ever Boot Brand. All the reviews are good on Amazon. To good maybe. I am a custodian at a school and have about 150 to 200 for a set of boots. Let me know what you think

Those Silverados look basicaly identical to my Cody James boots they're even both Electrical certified, all I noticed was the logo was diffrent, the color was diffrent and the Cody James have 4 rows of eyelets at the botom, though I will admit, I have no idea where the Cody James are made, just that they seem to be a Boot Barn brand.

Both of these boots have gone up $50.00 since this video came out. Companies just can’t resist jumping on the gouge train in the name on “inflation”… over 30% on the JG’s 😡

If you don't want to spend money on quality boots, what you do is you go on Ebay- and you search for your typical red wing boots. They will be sold there brand new for half price, they are called red wing factory seconds and they will have a hole punched through the tongue. You can get a top quality pair of boots for $135.

Awesome content, I work in building maintenance in public housing and actually have two par of boots, one for snow removal, and the other for everyday usage. They are also steel toed for safety. Great topic thanks again.

I've been wearing boots for a while now and I have never even heard of a boot dryer. Would these be needed for people who work in like muddy or snowy environments or do some people sweat through their socks so bad that the boots become wet? Honest question,l I live in California so I don't have to deal with snow, and not even mud all that often, and my feet don't really sweat that much. All of the boots that I own just smell like leather on the inside.

I bought one a couple years ago to dry out my boots in the winter, but then I began using it in the summer too. They really help keep your boots fresh.

army boots are good, I asked my dad for his old pair which he didn't wear when he was an engineer (he was in the army before that, they gave him those boots and other stuff to fit in with the soldiers) they are good boots, I'm glad I have them, (I don't do work though)

So question for you. I have some RWs and would like your input. How much could I push/use them without breaking them apart? Example, using them for hiking, getting wet, or are they simply for casual wear.
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 4 года назад
A good boot should hold up to all the above. I regularly use my Nicks to go for a hike, but they're a bit heavy. Red Wings (depending on the model) are quite substantial and should hold up to a good amount of abuse. It's really about your maintenance- do you let them dry out, keep them conditioned, store them out of the sun, etc.

@@CarlMurawski thank you for getting back to me. I have blacksmiths in rough and tough leather. On their webpage, RW recommends using a leather conditioner but I use Obenauf's heavyduty LP. I use them occasionally as casual wear, but wanted to know if it is indeed ok to use the LP.

It's hard to find comfortable work boots, I walk a lot at work and trying on boots at the store sucks when they have their inventory in the back. Sales reps face when you're not buying the first pair. I spend 112$ on sketchers work boots, and 40 mins my feet were in tremendous pain, TRASH. now I'm back to my old 50$ WSS boots.

Pressure washer here. I need at least 3 pair of mid tier boots to keep in rotation. Rubber boots are foot wreckers and hurt for more than a couple hours working. Ive had luck with military surplus Bellvilles & Bates with gore tex. Currently wearing Dickies traders (comfy) and Carolina steel toes I got on Ebay special. Bleach and water destroy boots. So I wear my Red Wings, Chippewa, and Wolverine 1000 Milers as casual wear. It would break my heart to have any of those get ruined by my profession.

LUGZ Drifter ZEO HI boot you should do a review on. A cheap boot. $30. Ive had it for 2 years. Put it through hell landscaping and working in my garage. Also wore it all winter in snow and slush, every day. Not a drop of water got through and feet were toasty warm every time. SOO warm and the most comfortable shoe or sneaker or boot Ive ever had on my feel. I stand 8 hours a day 5 days a week for 2+ years ont hem and they are like a memory foam sole. Still in perfect shape. All for $30. Your viewers may laugh at Lugz brand but Im telling you their boots are incredibly comfortable and well made.
