The funeral home my siblings and I planned our mother's funeral at gave us a book to look at, the Sears Wishbook of caskets. They were arranged by price and the cheapest were first.

When I was planning my mother's funeral, the funeral home took me and two of my sisters into their casket room and let us look at what they had. The prices were listed for each casket and the director did not follow us. We went into the room and he left us alone. There was a specific, middle of the road casket that I wanted and we found what I was looking for. It was an 18 gage casket that cost around $2,800.00. When my dad passed away I got him the same casket. It had gone up about $300.00, but it is what he wanted and that is what I got him. He was happy with the arrangements I had for my mom and know he would have liked what I had for him when he passed. If you've gone to enough family funerals you should already know what you would want for your parents or yourself. The separate funerals costs for each parent was under $15,000.00 and that included the grave, opening and closing, vault and marker and the luncheon. If you know the cemetery you want to be buried at you should look into purchasing the graves sooner than later. Makes the costs a bit cheaper when you have some of the costs pre-paid. I already have my spot next to my parents. Hopefully, I won't need it for a very long time.

I hope you are healthy and happy for a long time…. God bless you for honoring your parents….. I just recently prepaid… they wouldn’t guarantee I would get the same casket. So TWO CASKETS ARE IN MY BASEMENT…. THAT MADE THEM LISTEN….

@@michaelm5601 Yes, I heard of people purchasing caskets and putting them into storage. Nothing wrong with that. We were living on the southwest side of Chicago and people in the area already knew the funeral homes. The funeral home I went to handled my uncle and aunt's burial and liked how they took care of everything so that's who I went with.

I chose a 20 gauge steel casket from Titan. $ 1,100.00. Free delivery to the funeral home. Our parish priest got his casket from Trappist Caskets. Renewable wood source at the monastery, and made under the supervision of Trappist monks.

Purchasing a casket online cuts a significant portion of profit margin from your local family-owned funeral home. If you want funeral homes to survive to take care of the living and get the dead where they need to go then support your local funeral home business and purchase a casket and burial vault or cremation container and urn from them within your means. I know of no funeral director I've ever worked with that has tried to take advantage of a family by selling them more than they can afford. Funerals are not inexpensive.... neither are weddings... however both are meaningful. Funeral homes have a right to make a profit because they are a business and selling funeral merchandise is a significant part of their profit. Profit is relative term because it's not pure profit. There is great expense associated with running a funeral home. For example, to build a proper licensed crematory facility today can be over 1.5 million. The funeral home has to sell and provide a lot of funerals and cremation services to make payments on that loan. Behind the scenes you have essential equipment much of it customized, motor vehicles... all customized, salaries and benefits...all which come before real profit. Finally, funeral homes are also an essential business as the pandemic so proved.

Call me petty, but a cardboard box is fine with me. I actually have it in my will- or they can burn me. Either or- whatever is cheapest. I’ll be outta here anyway and happy back Home with the Lord.☺️
