Good video. Taiwan is a good Ally. I stopped in there a few times when I was in the US Navy. At that time they were just changing over from steam to diesel locomotives. I wanted to take the steam train from Kaoshung to Taipei. It still ran. But they were SO proud of their new American diesels, they actually would not let me go on the steam train. But the ride was the same in the old pullman cars. They also had antiaircraft gun emplacements everywhere with soldiers manning them. They seemed to expect Chairman Mao at any minute. And they were READY for him. Those were good visits. A bit off topic, but Taiwan was mentioned and a flood of memories came back. Thanks for a good video, and for teaching me about that saw.

I'm an American, but I live in Taiwan. The manufacturing industry here is incredibly good. As it turns out, Taiwan actually produces some of the best products in the world in several industries (computer parts, optics, camera gear, bikes, etc). I bought my welder from a local shop that makes them by hand. Hand made, 220v, 200amp, and it is rated as having a 70% duty cycle at 200amps. I can tell you right now, it is the best welder I have ever owned. I have had that thing with me on rooftops in the middle of summer (summers here can be pretty brutal) and been running it nearly non-stop for hours on end, from sunrise to sunset, and have NEVER overheated it or had any issues with it at all. Though there are always exceptions, I feel like "made in Taiwan" is usually a pretty good sign.

I have held onto brushes and springs from other equipment that broke. Sometimes I luck out when the ones I have can be filed down to closely fit the ones that wore out. It is a soft material. Next to go are the bearings....they are usually more difficult to replace. I bought a Harbor FGT miter saw and have swapped out the blade for a multi-tooth metal blade. I use a variable speed device that allows me to slow the RPMs for various services. The abrasive blades throw off much more "soot". Thanks Scott. J K

I know, Scott, that you said you liked Porter Cable and what that saw did for you. But, I have to ask, why would you not spend just a bit more and get a dry cut saw? Virtually no dust, next to no sparks, a beautiful clean cut, and the metal doesn't get hot. Hmmm.... Waiting for the forging!

Fixing power tools is a crap shoot when they are that old... often times commutator is worn from all the grit on job sites, especially this tool. Bearings shot. If you aren't using it to feed your family it's one thing to repair. I tend to put my efforts into rebuilding old stationary power tools instead of hand power tools.

I totally agree with you. If the brushes are really bad there is a good chance that the commutator is shot. This means a new armature (if you can find one). It's worth taking apart to asses the extent of the repair, but unlikely it would be worth the time and effort.

Great video. I will say though, after using a Cold saw, i.e. Makita LC1230, there was no going back to an abrasive saw. I've made many cuts in all sizes of steel and the blade is still sharp. Cold saws are worth every penny and save so much clean up time on deburring and filing. The biggest plus is the cut accuracy, cut time and hardly any sparking that cannot be matched with any abrasive saw. Just my two cents though. Your vids are always fantastic. What's your opinion ? Thanks.

I always felt like Taiwan held to the USA supplied specs on the Delta commercial table saw and fence along with other manufacturers who made the "move" in the eighties. China it seems was willing to push the tolerances in order to get the numbers through the quality control department. Still I want a USA Baldor TEFC on any big machine I buy. And I want a Jacuzzi pump on my big compressors. But perhaps the times have passed me by....

We all should try to buy Made in the USA, but it's becoming increasingly difficult. I spent 18 years working at a Wal-Mart Distribution Center. I don't know how many remember this, but EVERYTHING that Wal-Mart sold up til the mid ninteies was made in the USA... EVERYTHING. Ahhh, the good ol' days.
@TheSteveMeister

The reason why people try not to buy foreign is the reason why I dont particularly want to buy American made products. Reason why, made in American ideally wants every component for the product to be made in American. Aswell as the materials for the the component to be mined in American. Like the metal that is cast, forged, or milled to be mined in American. Now America doesn't have unlimited metal supply. In fact often places that produce American Made products use diluted metal. Which is an alloy of the claimed metal. Why would diluting metal matter? Well it decreases quality substantially. It easily gets worn out fast, diluted stainless steel can rust, and the metal can break easier. Made in American doesn't have the same meaning anymore.

Here is the modern parable. I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 several years old that the ink delivery malfunctioned after a two week vacation with it probably drying out. The only error message was " Turn it off and back on. Then contact HP." A new 8710 was on sale Tuesday at Best Buy for $99. $100 off. An extra set of inks was $104. Except for no LAN port which I didn't realize, I get a brand new printer now versus some obscure hope that the old one can be fixed by someone, somewhere, sometime, for some amount of money. Porter Cable makes some good stuff. Anyways everything is being shifted to Vietnam and Thailand anyway.

I'm right there with you. I go out of my way to buy Made in the USA products. They just last (lasted) longer... I still use Skillsaw my father used in the 70s for framing houses. Unfortunately, very little is made in the USA anymore and even those items "built" here have components made somewhere else (China). So what do you do? You don't stop working... so you buy what you can find. That's all there is to it. That said, I have had good luck going to garage sales and pawn shops buying up tools that were made in the USA. Last week, I bought a never used Porta Cable router for $40 made sometime in the 90s!

I have a Dewalt. It is not worth a flying %^&*. It won't cut straight at all. We built a CNC plasma table. I cut 42 pieces of 2x3x11 ga square tubing with the Dewalt angle grinder. Was probably slower than the chop saw, but MUCH more accurate. We have since got a 7x12 horizontal band saw. It will cut 1" round withing a couple of thousandths of an inch of square and flat. The chop saw is now in long term storage.

Buying USA usually means paying twice the price for half the features and it’s not always better. Grizzly for example US headquarters but all Chinese rebrands. Buying USA makes sense when you’re buying Starret vs Mitutoyo or Brown and Sharpe vs Wen. I’ve just learned that at the bargain prices expect some extra work and inspection upon arrival. Most of these tools are being replaced by robots in my shop so the hand accuracy is becoming less important. That being said I don’t need my tools to last a century. Just till the robots built. Great video thanks.

The price is right but what of accuracy? I found saws with cast iron bases cut a very close 90 degrees but saws with stamped metal bases tend to ratchet when excessive downward force is applied when cutting resulting in a less desirable cut that requires extra attention. Fixing 20 or 30 cuts may not justify a few bucks saved! You have a great channel with a lot of time saving tips I have used. . . also I like the way U think. This reminds me, I have an issue with one of our chop saws (not sure what make it is as it's 8pm and dark atm). I have tried different ways, but it seems that the saw always cuts slightly off angle. I can check the squareness with a square and it's fine. Start cutting, especially light steel, and it'll start to cut away from the saw/work/table and won't be right angle cut.It doesn't feel. It doesn't seem like the bearings are loose, not but jiggling the blade at least. I've even replaced the blade thinking that the blade was warping a little (was a cheap harbor freight blade before). Any ideas?

If it is anything like the 6" sander, it won't last. Sadly, i've gone through more than i can count now. It's close to half a dozen in two years. The last one didn't make it 2 months. I'm still getting replacements from lowes on my original service agreement. Last time, i told them i would not pay the $20 bucks(you have to buy a new one each time they replace the tool) as it didn't last long enough, and they cheerfully refunded that money, so i could buy a new one on the new one, sigh. I'll probably get one of those like you have, though we had one just like your old one in the machine shop i worked at one year, and i loved it. I find the pressed steel bases on those saws to be of very low quality and difficult to get a decent square and repeatable cut especially if you are cutting something on the larger size. The Dewalt I use has a very similar or exact same base to your saw. If only they made them with a better quality base and vice they would be a killer saw. It aint no Brobo I know.

I try to buy American when I can as well. Buy sometimes the price difference is so significant I just can't afford to pass up the Chinese product.

Why not repair the old workhorse saw?

Why didn't you just change the brushes on the old saw for $5?

I'm actually in the market for one of these and the price is hard to argue with... I might give one a shot. It's on sale on Amazon right now for $99, but last December it was down to $80. I think I'll keep my eye on it and see what the Christmas sales bring.

Same here.. but mine was a Dewalt that my whole shop used. Wound up replacing it with the same model number.. 8 years service in a heavy equipment shop.. not bad.

Curious; Were the brushes no longer available for the old one? I know for some brands its hard or impossible to get replacement parts, even for parts that are replaceable.

They do that on purpose so you have to buy a new tool..

SublimatedIce brushes are easy to find. Sounds like more money than sense to me. 🤷‍♂️

Guarantee it’s a cheaper saw. Should have fixed the older one.

First thing I do with a new chop saw is remove that extra guard and throw it in the trash.
