Cheap DIY Caravan Fly screen Replacement Hack

Hi all! This is a quick video for those wanting a cheap DIY way to replace entire fly screens.
I bought the roll of fly screen from Bunnings and it cost a total of approx $60 for all four windows in our little 1986 Jayco Finch. Note- you can get better quality/closer weave too which is a bit more expensive but probably worth it if you’re heading to the tropics.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is to make sure you wipe the soldering iron on a cotton cloth every once in a while as the coating from the screens tends to build up on the tip.
Another thing is that you will likely need some resistance from the opposite side at times. I found that along the bottom seam (which was on the outside as shown in the video) it was easy enough to join them as it was quite taught. When I moved inside to do the side and top seams, I got my partner to hold a block of wood up against the back from the outside to ensure both surfaces were held together properly as there was some slack which made it tricky.
We have since sold the van but it held up for a good 6 months of traveling around VIC, SA, NSW & QLD. We popped it up and down every couple of days and had a variety of weather conditions.
I hope that this video proves helpful for fellow cost saving adventure lovers like ourselves. Good luck and happy travels!

What material screen do I need because all I see are fiberglass

Did this today, several small patches as repairs rather than entirely new screens. It worked too!

Nice hack. I never considered using a soldering iron. I bet you could also follow up with a coating of some sort of vinyl adhesive over it to help bind it together.

I did this 5 years ago and it's held well, except one spot when and excited 3 year tackled their sister into it.

Do youneed any particular kind of soldering iron? Or temperature?

Hi, couple of questions. Were you worried that putting pins through the canvas would cause water proofing issues? Also I tried melting 2 small pieces of fly screens together as practice. It seems semi strong but did rip apart if I pulled on it. Did yours seem strong enough when done?

I suppose you could "tack" it up this way and then once it is set good in place super glue it on the inside edge.

Seems like it works for some and not others, wondering if hot glue might work?

Thanks for letting us know. I had planned to do this. What a shame as it seems time intensive. Did you find a better approach?
